How to sleep comfortably at night when camping?

Newchallenge · 29/07/2021 13:08

Inspired by previous threads - I like camping, we are camping for a whole week this year Shock

How am I going to sleep - 2 nights nearly broke me! What camping equipment should I get?

Currently using selection of roll mats, quilts and a self inflating (tiny) air mattress. I still hurt my hips lying on my side!

For us it was thick self inflating mats and 4 season sleeping bags.

I'll agree, wine and walks did help too!

Good quality high rise air bed, mats underneath. Good quality sleeping bag on top with fleece throws, thick duvet and pillows. Hot water bottle and warms pjs and socks. Important to have a good tent and carpet definitely helps.

Proper pillow, and sheet. Option to turn the sleeping bag into a duvet if it's warm. Lavender spray for the pillow.

Yes it is difficult to sleep in camping conditions extremely comfortably. Perhaps you should buy another mattress that is more comfortable

KeepingOnKeepingUp · 29/07/2021 13:52

Oh yes, and an eye mask. Essential in the summer.

drumandthebass · 29/07/2021 13:56

You should definitely take your own duvet. That was a game changer for me

We have an air mattress like this, which is really comfy, and we vacuum pack our duvet as well as sleeping bags. We have been known to get EHU and put a small heater in the tent when camping in colder climes.

DysmalRadius · 29/07/2021 14:10

Posted too soon, because one of the best things about that mattress is that it's tall enough that you can actually sit on it as well, so it's additional in-tent seating. And you can use it as a guest bed at home - it's that comfy!

Lots of great ideas but thought I'd add sex to the list!
I struggle to sleep when we camp but find that a couple of beers and some very nice but obviously quiet sex helps me sleep Blush

WeAreTheHeroes · 29/07/2021 14:13

The one time I went camping I had so little sleep and it was bloody cold. I vowed never, ever again. Go glamping or stay in a caravan, hotel or B&B. Lack of sleep is a form of torture. Why inflict it on yourself?

rantymcrantface66 · 29/07/2021 14:16

I have a good quality air bed, one with lines instead of dimples. You could even get one of the high ones that are bore like real beds of you have the space. I then use a mattress topper, sleeping bag, duvet and 2 pillows. Very comfy and cozy

OhGiveUp · 29/07/2021 14:19

I use fisherman's beds. They can be doubled as chairs during the day.
Very comfy.

Bryonyshcmyony · 29/07/2021 14:19

@RedToothBrush

A charged phone and details of a nearby b&b you can book in emergency.
🤣

One of my friends had a huge mattress. I think it was an aerobed? Thst looked comfy. Apart from that it has never appealed.

Bryonyshcmyony · 29/07/2021 14:22

Dd swears by an army cot with a thick SIM on top.

bonbonours · 29/07/2021 14:24

@MrsJackRackham

Plenty of red wine at night ensures I sleep like a drunken baby GrinWine
The problem with the wine strategy is I wake up needing a wee in the middle of the night, lie awake for ages trying to ignore it, and finally end up having to trek across the field and freeze to death. Then can't get back to sleep as too cold.
rantymcrantface66 · 29/07/2021 14:27

The problem with fisherman's and camp beds are that they are single, I like a nice double to sprawl out in.

Coogee · 29/07/2021 16:41

You should definitely take your own duvet.

As opposed to someone else’s?

Cumberlover76 · 29/07/2021 17:00

Me and DH have 2 single outwell dreamcatcher 10cm SIMs with an old king mattress topper on top. Sheet then we take duvet and pillows. Put picnic blankets underneath. So comfortable.

IWantT0BreakFree · 29/07/2021 17:19

If you've got EHU then you can't beat the Activ-Era blow up beds. They are a full height bed, don't get cold and they stay well inflated all night. Very comfortable indeed.

Wriggleon · 29/07/2021 17:23

I find a proper pillow makes the air mattress experience better

emmathedilemma · 29/07/2021 17:27

An airbed per person (don't share a double, you end up rolling into each other). Ideally a double per adult but that requires a fairly sizeable tent!
Put a thick blanket or one of those foam mats under the airbed for insulation. Use a matress protector to reduce the sweat factor and then normal sheets, duvet and pillow.
No matter how cold it is get completely changed out of the clothes you've been wearing during the day as moisture condensing overnight and makes you cold. Wear socks to bed so you don't get cold feet in the night and have a hat and jumper to hand in case you do.
Also use an eye mask and ear plugs for protection against the dawn sunrise and early rising fellow campers!
Enough glasses of wine to make you pass out but not so many that you get seasick on your airbed!

Hotdogsforsale · 29/07/2021 17:32

There are corner straps on the base @Newchallenge so the SIMS stay put. Two bases clip together to make a double, and the Decathlon SIMS zip into a double as well. Honestly so impressed with it!

Namechangeforthis88 · 29/07/2021 17:43

I have an 8cm SIM and a three or four season snooze pod sleeping bag. Tent has blackout bedroom. I have clinical looking bottle with feminine adaptor for emergency wees. Occasionally I sleep better camping than I do at home.

The snooze pod was a break through. Prior to that I typically went to bed fully dressed with two jumpers, goat wool socks over standard socks and a woolly hat on head, and still felt cold.

daphnedoo12 · 29/07/2021 17:45

I always brought an air bed and a cheap duvet and I've never struggled to sleep, always slept perfectly well even in a tiny cramped tent that DH bought and we could barely get the two of us in

daphnedoo12 · 29/07/2021 17:46

Ohhh and a pillow, a pillow is a must
