Help, HMRC are going to put out a warrant for me!

I've just had a phone call from HMRC telling me there has been tax fraud on my account, and I either press 1 to speak to them or if I hang up a warrant will be issued Shock

So... I have about 5 minutes to pack a suitcase and run away! What do I pack? Wink

Seriously, I am aware it was a scam Smile

The phone number was: +44 1223 512843

On my iPhone it said it was from Cambridge.

Just FYI but you can report the phone call here. I don't know if it makes any difference but I always report all the calls/emails I get, just in case it makes the difference between a vulnerable person getting scammed and not.

I'm already on the run from HMRC and Interpol. Pack the perfect capsule wardrobe, choose a sunny place for shady people and you could look like me.

Help, HMRC are going to put out a warrant for me!
DysonSphere · 29/07/2021 10:16

@TawnyPipit Grin

I'm going to try this and see if I magically look better!

dementedpixie · 29/07/2021 10:18

All my unpaid parcels from Royal mail will be building up into a ginormous pile now

Arsebucket · 29/07/2021 10:28

I’m wanted to.

Also “Dan” from Amazon is after me. He has a voice like an automated robot and keeps telling me my account has been fiddled with.

I’m on to him though, I think he’s a terminator sent by HMRC to try and capture me if I press 1 on my phone. So I shan’t do it.

annonymousse · 29/07/2021 10:29

I'm also dodging the taxman and my internet is about to be switched off any second now. Apparently Hermes couldn't deliver my parcel yesterday. Don't remember ordering anything. Hope I haven't been sleep shopping. Doesn't matter though because I'm a lottery winner and I can afford it

PattyPan · 29/07/2021 10:30

Me too, but I needed the money to pay someone to come and check my loft insulation

PanamaPattie · 29/07/2021 10:37

You can all come to my house and hide in the basement. I’ve got the dogs of war and snipers guarding my drive to stop interlopers parking. I’ve been prepping for the zombie apocalypse for years - we won’t starve. Just bring a bottle of vino as there is a cheese and wine ice breaker tonight at 7.

Gremlinsateit · 29/07/2021 10:47

I’ll join you just as soon as I receive the refunds for the expensive Amazon and eBay items I didn’t order. The fellow was so helpful when I pressed 1 Hmm

GiveMeAUserName123 · 29/07/2021 10:47

I have so many warrants out for my arrest from so many companies I’m sure they will be introducing me to the queen soon for my outstanding ability to be so wanted by so many!

LadyCatStark · 29/07/2021 11:08

I’ll let you hide in my attic if you pop by the post office and pick up the parcel that they were unable to deliver at 2am due to unpaid postage. I’ll click on the link to pay the fees…

BashfulClam · 29/07/2021 11:12

I pressed 1 and after he tried to scare me I said ‘Really? I’m a tax accountant so let me just get my records and we can check where I’ve not paid correctly!’ He shouted at me and hung up.

mintylovely · 29/07/2021 11:12

I need to run too, they've caught me looking at internet sites that they'll share with all my contacts list. I can't have real life people knowing how much time I spend on Mumsnet BlushGrin

Yuckyfinger · 29/07/2021 11:13

I wonder what the take up is for pressing 1...and presumably being coerced into giving bank details...?

Is it an actual person? All the ones I've had from HMRC and National Crime agency sound automated...

Magpiecomplex · 29/07/2021 11:23

I'm still waiting for my internet to be turned off. It's been months...
I do seem to have had an awful lot of accidents which weren't my fault lately though, so be careful when you leg it, OP, you don't want that to happen to you too!

rslsys · 29/07/2021 11:26

Nat West are very concerned about unusual activities on my account. So much so they have obviously communicated these fears to TSB who are now concerned as well!

HSBC are always very concerned about me.

Which is so lovely of them considering i’ve never had an account with them.

rslsys · 29/07/2021 11:33

Funnily enough, HSBC don't seem to give a damn about me, despite being the only bank I have an account with!

Terhou · 29/07/2021 11:37

The very fact that it comes from a mobile number is almost a big flashing announcement that it's scam, you'd think any criminal with half a brain could work that one out. Still, I suppose they get enough people falling for it to make it worth their while. When I get a call I leave the phone line open in the hope that it will run up their phone bill and at least hinder them in calling other people.

It's a while since I've had the HMRC call - I seem to specialise in the ones about my phone line, my internet or my computer. They hang up in a huff when I tell them I don't have a phone or a computer.

I once got stopped in the shopping mall by someone wanting to show me some super whizz-bang new skin care. I looked him in the eye and said "I'm terribly sorry - I don't speak English!" - and walked away from their blank look!

I did get one persistent cold caller who refused to take my name off his call list unless I gave him my postcode. He argued until he was blue in the face that I had to, so I just put the phone down next to me on the table and let him talk to fresh air. He gave up after a while, but rang back - and I answered in French, and insisted I didn't speak any English.

He actually swore at me! I was shocked, I tell you - shocked!! Grin

Dan from Amazon keeps ringing me too.. to politely warn me that I have bought a very, very expensive iPhone and that they definitely will charge me for it unless I give him all my money and my soul.

Funnily HMRC were after me too after putting out a warrant. Although I've not heard from them for a while, maybe they're trying to contact me on the new iPhone that I apparently ordered Hmm
