Boys with long hair

Why do people feel the need to pass judgement of bots who choose to have long hair?

It's happened a lot. Especially with older family members but I and ds just shrug those comments off. When a complete strangers tells him he'll 'need that cutting before he goes back to school' I just find it takes the piss!

No real reason for the post really apart from a bit of a rant. As you were!

People just cannot seem to process it.
My youngest has very long curly hair but is very obviously a boy. Without fail every single time we go anywhere someone refers to him as she. The poor boy was completely non verbal until about three months ago but one of the first things he learned at speech therapy was 'NO! BOY!'

Precisely! And have you seen Henry Cavill in Witcher?!

DH, DS and DS' best friend all have long hair. All their choice.

I think it's not what people expect but why that should be a problem?Confused

SweetPetrichor · 28/07/2021 18:15

My DP had long hair in his 20s and was when he was a student working weekends in Asda, he’d often get someone thinking he was a women when approached from behind. When he turned around and you saw the beard, they’d usually apologise! Grin A toddler did once look at him and say “mummy, why is that man a goat?”

DuckonaBike · 28/07/2021 18:20

Long hair on boys and men can look great! I wish it was more popular.

I liked it on all the indie kids in the early 90s. I think I was 22 before I dated anyone whose hair was shorter than mine!

GetOffThatTable · 28/07/2021 18:29

Ds had this when he was younger and it wasn't even that long. Luckily he had a couple of female teachers with short hair so when parents said long hair is for girls Ds would say what about Mrs X? It was great to see the parent realise that Mrs X had short hair and it did not make her male.

But yes it is shit, my response to strangers was why does it bother you whether my son has long hair or not? Keep your outdated opinions to yourself.

And yes, Henry Cavill in the Witcher, lovely. Blush

@LST has to have his hair collar length. Oh well 😢

Rizzoli123 · 28/07/2021 18:33

Sorry i had a whole post which vanished.

My two boys hadlng hair and looked amazing. One of them had to have his cut to collar lenght for school. I was gutted. I took my youngest to a party at the weekend and someone went is she OK. Does she want anything. I had to say very loudly he is fine thank you! I am dreading getting his hair cut like his brothers for school. They are not allowed long hair. School policy 😢

VaguelyInteresting · 28/07/2021 18:38

DS is 5 and has long blonde hair. He doesn’t want to cut it. I ask him every so often and it’s always “not yet”. He often wears it in a single plait and I heard one of the girls at the park ask in awe “is that your REAL hair or an Elsa Plait like you get on a headband?” (From Frozen).

DS was THRILLED. “Did you hear her mum? Did you hear her?! Can you believe she thought it was pretend hair?!”
Grin

I don't have any issues at all with boys having long hair but I do mistake them for girls sometimes (particularly the beautiful ones wearing pink/dresses). I don't mind being politely corrected, though!!

FittedSheet · 28/07/2021 18:46

@MildredPuppy

It really annoys people doesnt it.
Yes, it drives some people absolutely crazy.

DS had a longish blonde semi-pudding bowl for a few months as a toddler — mainly because he loathed haircuts — and after he’d had it cut shorter, a neighbour whose name I didn’t even know came up to us on the street and said ‘Oh, I was wondering when you were going to get it cut! I’m really glad to see it looking better.’ Hmm

I mean, he was two.

Peoniesandpeaches · 28/07/2021 18:50

@Reallyreallyborednow

As long as it is your child who wants his hair long and not you........... then ignore the comments

Why do people always assume it’s the parents making some sort of statement?

As pp said, do you also think short hair on boys (and long hair on girls) is the parents choice too? As it often is, more so than the other way round…

I don’t always assume it but sadly I do know a few mums like this. Rabidly anti-vax, ‘free range,’ ‘unschool parenting’ types who dress their children solely in duns vegetable print clothing.Their boys are always pulling their hair out of their face and crying because it has big knots in it but the mums insist they loooovvveee their hair despite all evidence to the contrary. It makes me a bit sad for them in the same way I feel sorry for little girls forced into frilly dresses when they clearly don’t want to be. I know that this is a minority of people and I wouldn’t assume anyone here was doing that to their child but it does happen.
GrouchyKiwi · 28/07/2021 18:51

Why is that man a goat?

Grin So funny.

juliainthedeepwater · 28/07/2021 18:54

I personally find it weird how many people automatically and actively cut their young boys’ hair short just... cos they’re a boy! Seems so backwards.

clarepetal · 28/07/2021 18:54

My boy had long hair till he started school and wanted to cut it. I was gutted, but didn't want him to feel uncomfortable as he was clearly self conscious about it so I got it cut off.
I love long hair on boys, I think it looks lovely 😍😊

FunnyWonder · 28/07/2021 18:55

DS is 13 and has shoulder length wavy black hair. DP's parents can be quite rude about it, asking when he's going for a hair cut and saying he looks like a girl. He couldn't care less. He was mistaken for a girl in school by a substitute teacher (to be fair he was wearing a mask) and he found this hilarious. He suits his hair long. In fact I can't imagine him with short hair now!

Crazysheep · 28/07/2021 18:55

I have an almost teen DS with long hair. Absolutely point blank refuses to have anything but a trim. He will only trust one hairdresser to do his hair (a barber quite ironically). She often jokes she is going to give him a short back and sides before she retires. Thankfully she is a long way off retirement age.

HarrisMcCoo · 28/07/2021 18:56

All four of mine have long hair.

edgeware · 28/07/2021 19:05

My DS has gorgeous blonde curly hair. He is 3.5, when I ask him he says he doesn’t want to cut it. I’m not keen to either, it is beautiful.

InsideNumberNine · 28/07/2021 19:14

My DS has beautiful long curly hair. Is adamant he doesn't want it short for school. It helps that DH has shoulder length hair so to DS, it's just normal.
