Tell me your best examples of cheeky F**kery and unbelievable requests on FB Marketplace!!

I have been recently trying to sell some items on FB marketplace. I know there are CF aplenty on there but recently this has astounded me!

I tried to sell some Our Generation dolls play sets.
One of the sets was a camping set where you could clearly see my skirting boards behind the tent and all the accessories were clearly made out of plastic. I had three messages all asking how many people could sleep in the tent!! (4 if you are a borrower)
I also had a 4 poster bed advertised which clearly stated doll bed in capitals. That attracted many messages regarding the quality of the mattress. Not sure why they thought they were getting a 4 poster bed with mattress and bedding for £30!

I also had a toy ice cream truck and a retro diner for sale. Both of which had all the original food accessory parts. I had several messages asking if they could buy certain items from the sets so that they had a complete set! (Erm nope)

The biggest debacle was trying to sell a kids Ikea wardrobe set and loft bed.
I had a lady who wanted the whole lot. She had a van and was coming to get it on the Wednesday. Wednesday morning she told be she was waiting for a refund from another bed she had ordered.
By this point I had dismantled the loft bed and the wardrobes and they were all in my hallway. She asked if we could keep them until Friday. We reluctantly agreed. I explained we had others interested. It came to Friday and I messaged her and she said she would be collecting today.
I asked her what time and then realised she had blocked me!!
I then had a second buyer who had access to a van but wasn't moving into their house until the Monday. We agreed to keep the items as it suited us to do it on the weekdays.
It got to the Monday and she said she was now waiting to hear from social services to find out if her furniture grant had been successful.
Who asks someone to keep a huge quantity of furniture in their hallway without even having money to purchase it.
A lovely buyer came the very next day.

What time wasters/numpties have you experienced?

I was selling a large cage I'd used for rats for £50. It was a good price as very big and sturdy. A bloke messaged to say he'd give me £30 and wanted it dismantled for pick up that afternoon. I said no as I didn't have time and also thought he sounded like a cf. He messaged back saying there was no way i'd get £50 for it. I ignored. He then messaged the next day to say he'd got a cage for £30 and that I "shouldn't bite the hand that feeds me"!!!
Luckily I sold it soon after for £50, but what an arse he was!

Oh god I’ve had one of them too!

Driveway grids. You know the type you put under sheds or gravel to park on? I’d ordered too many so put them on marketplace at an utter bargain price. Blokey messages, full of self importance. Less than half the price was offered. He’d be doing me a favour blah blah. He was most put out when I told him no and then marked them as sold. I was even more amused when I spotted a ‘desperately wanted ASAP’ ad for grids on the local buy/sell page. Perhaps if you’d not tried to be a cheap tossed you’d now have the grids you wanted.

Mmmmdanone · 26/07/2021 23:47

I've got another! Some nice curtains I was selling for £10. I photographed them before I took them down. Someone asked if they came with the curtain pole!

AddsVsGeorgs · 26/07/2021 23:49

I put an ad up , to see if anyone would be interested in womens clothes size 34-36.
Mostly brand new, with tags, alot from America
Alot still to be sorted out.
But all expensive nice stuff

Now i realise these are big sizes but the abuse i got was unbelievable

I havent thrown them away, they were my MIL’s and i know someone will really appreciate them

The charity shop said they wouldnt be able to sell them

Iv tried to join a ‘big ladies local clothes group’ but they havent accepted my request, iv even messeged the admin, they replied but still didnt accept my request

🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

I was selling a big item (like a car) on fb. It was old but well looked after and working and a proper bargain. I had a lot of interest in it.

But what tickled me was that someone had tagged someone on my post to draw their attention to it. Then they proceeded to have a discussion, in public, on my post, about how to knock me down and how much to offer. Basically giving away all their negotiating plans. I can see your posts, you know!

tommyketchup · 26/07/2021 23:53

I was selling 2 single mattresses and some bloke was being quite difficult as he wouldn't give me a time he was coming and expect me to wait in all morning! I said I'd leave them outside for him to collect (& if he didn't post the money I honestly didn't care as it was only £20 and saved me getting rid) but he was going on and on about the weather and them getting wet - fair enough so tell me a time and I'll leave them indoors. Anyway he finally turned up at the time agreed (ish) and it was literally pissing it down - he chucked them in the back of a flat bed truck totally uncovered HmmShock

AddsVsGeorgs · 26/07/2021 23:55

Hell i would of said i got 20 pairs of socks

Several people with whom I've scheduled interviews for a job vacancy (decent pay) and just didn't turn up, without even letting me know.

sunshineandshowers21 · 27/07/2021 01:11

@AddsVsGeorgs if you’ve got the time to list and send i’d try putting them on vinted. i’ve made almost £500 this month selling my unwanted clothes. i sold some bigger sizes for my friend and they went so fast! no fees either which is a bonus.

name4change · 27/07/2021 01:14

selling a car on FB, needed a bit of work, quoted 1200 by garage to pass MOT, so listed quite cheap as spares/repair. Cocky young guy turns up with mates , tells me he's a mechanic and goes round car , test drive up and down street, haggles a further £50 for almost bald tyres. Agreed and went into house for documents .DP and NDN in street not involved hear him chatting to mates about how the car is "mint" and that he was practically stealing it at that price.
Next day got an angry message telling me i owe him money as the car has major faults and broke down on way home and needed a jump start. Replied that if he returns it to me i will give him most of his money back- funnily never heard anything

AddsVsGeorgs · 27/07/2021 01:15

Thank you @sunshineandshowers21

MazDazzle · 27/07/2021 01:35
  1. I offered a huge pile of school uniforms for FREE. Comment: I’ll take these can you deliver? (No please or thank you)
  1. Advertised my daughter’s go-kart for sale at a fraction of the price similar items were selling for. Someone was desperate for it, but only if I could deliver (50 miles!) or could I meet her at the nearest town? Fair enough, but only on a particular day and at the exact time that suited her. Fine. She paid in loose change!
  1. Someone put out an emergency post that they’d been flooded, asking for a bundle of kids’ clothes. I raced to gather pants, socks, trousers, tops, pjs, and a coat x 2. ‘You’ll have to deliver. I don’t know the area.’ I was on the same street! And she had a smart phone.
Progress2019 · 27/07/2021 02:47

@AddsVsGeorgs I sold my bigger clothes on ebay, and they were snapped up. There aren’t very many shops that cater for plus sized women, so they’re really in demand. I started with low start prices, but everything reached a good price.

I volunteer in a charity shop and they don’t sell any clothes over a size 16 (donations go in the rag bin). I think its awful.

AddsVsGeorgs · 27/07/2021 02:51

@Progress2019

Thank you

A few years ago now- I won a car in a charity lottery. Yay me! It was too big for my needs, so I advertised it for sale. Made the HUGE mistake of mentioning it was a lottery prize. In my defence, I felt I needed to explain how/why it was brand new/never driven.

I had dozens of horrible people reply that since I got it for free I should be passing it on for free (since I obviously didn’t want it). Increasingly nasty, envious messages.

Yeah, I’ll just pass on the £27k shall I? Annoying and time-wasting. Took me ages to restore my faith in people.

Ended up selling it rather cheaply to a dealer, who at least had the sense to negotiate on the real value.

PurplePansy05 · 27/07/2021 05:15

People don't bloody read!

I always provide dimensions and details regarding the condition of an item and/or what's included in the set, as well as collection arrangements.

I had one coming in to buy a mirror trying to haggle with me saying she thought she was bigger and will I sell for £5 less. I said dimensions were in the listing and no, I'll make the ad live again. She obviously bought it then.

Another million and one people asking about dimensions, collection arrangements and whatever else even though it's ALL in the listings. Total time wasters.

Then some telling you life stories as to why they can't buy. I really don't care!

I had one asking about a very popular item I was selling for £50 and trying to negotiate the price SEVEN times after I told her I was already selling at full price the following day, had a a shortlist of people waiting and would not sell for less. She then messaged "but would you sell for £40?" 🤦🏼‍♀️

The absolute worst one was faffing for a fortnight wasting my time buying some furniture. She wanted it to match some other items she had at home. She finally turned up with one of them for comparison, clearly exactly the same range as mine and she said they weren't identical after I dragged everything out for her at 7 months pregnant at the time. Unbelievable CF.

There are many reasonable buyers though, I've just learnt to respond shortly and not waste my time on those that aren't.

PurplePansy05 · 27/07/2021 05:18

Oh and one turned up for a set of 2 curtains thinking it included 4.

jozipozi31 · 27/07/2021 05:22

Bikini bottoms.

25 messages asking if they're used. No I say. The advert says brand new.

Every guy said 'Can they be ..?'

Yes I thought. But the the price will not be £20 but £200.

IWantAllTheDogsInTheWorld · 27/07/2021 05:53

@IncessantNameChanger

Most of mine are the same two people wanting things that cant drive and live nowhere near me. I put the village as the first thing on my post then a few blank lines so it cant be lost in the listing.

Both of them comment as soon as I post so no one else replies. Then they either ask me to meet in town or that they arrange a mate to collect.

Even on local clothes bank pages where I give kids clothes away they do this. I have totally given up now with everything except Ebay to sell things. Charity shop is such low hassle compared to this

Can you block them from viewing your listings?

CobraChicken · 27/07/2021 06:29

Nothing like as bad as most of the examples on here. It was just the way the person phrased their "offer" that got my back up.

I was selling a Xbox One console and lots of games for $250. It was a v.fair price as this was a good few years ago and it was still current tech.

Someone ask me to hold it for her until her boyfriend came home. She definitely wanted it but had no way to pick up until he finished work.

I had lots of other enquiries and told them all that it was sold, pending pickup.

It got to ~9pm and I'd heard nothing so I messaged and asked whether she still wanted it. She replied with:
" My boyfriend says he'll take it for $100 "

I responded along the lines of: " Tell him good luck with his search! 😂 "

(I sold it for my original asking price to the next person in line the following day.)

CobraChicken · 27/07/2021 06:31

Blush an Xbox One...

Positivelypatient · 27/07/2021 07:01

We were giving away an old leather sofa & chair on gumtree. Person came and collected the chair first (it was pretty big) and said they'd be back for the sofa. Never came back. Cheeky feckers.

SpacePug · 27/07/2021 09:13

I was selling some children's bedding on FB. A woman asked about it said she was coming at x time. Didn't come, messaged saying her cat had had kittens in the night (!?) So she was tired from being up all night. Said please can I save it as her daughter really wants it. I said okay I'll save it til X day when she can come. Between the days she messaged me photo of kittens and told me how they were doing (?!) Then the day came, I messaged and said are you still coming at 3pm? No reply. She didn't turn up. I asked do you still want it saving? No reply. I sold it to someone else the next day 😑

PinniGig · 27/07/2021 09:26

Wasn't on the marketplace but I help a dog rescue with various things including responding to FB messages and managing the posts etc.

Someone posted “Hi I would like to re-home one on your dogs please preferably a puppy. Also can you tell me how much a train ticket is from to your nearest station and when the services run?”

I just posted a link to National Rail.

Mydogisagentleman · 27/07/2021 10:41

I got my dog a bed with a sunshade on it. He absolutely refused to lay on it so I put a picture of it on our very local FB page asking if anyone wanted it.
Three people said yes, I said I would put it outside the front door and gave them the address.
We went out, I came home to a couple of hysterical messages on my phone and an angry note pushed through the door.
Apparently one of my neighbours had driven around out very small estate to find it and it had gone.
I am unfeeling as I didn’t give everybody the same chance and their dog would benefit as it is elderly.
