What things do you only have at Christmas and not through the year and why?

JustLoveYourselfALittle · 24/07/2021 22:47

For example I only ever buy pate at Christmas. I love it. Its readily available all year yet until today have never purchased any time other than Christmas

I get that some things you generally only get around Xmas but I mean things that are in shops all year but wouldn't normally buy.

Currently working my way through a tonne of pate and ritz.

A Toblerone or boxes of chocolates
Pringles (as above, I can eat them far too easily if I bought them often)
Pigs in blankets
Homemade sausage rolls
Nigella's ginger glazed ham
Homemade chocolate Yule log
Champagne
Dips for crisps

bluechameleon · 25/07/2021 08:49

Agree with pps about After Eights, Quality Street and chocolate orange. I also rarely buy pigs in blankets outside of Christmas (occasionally for a party food buffet because the DC like them) and never buy a whole turkey.

-Gingerbread house and gingerbread men

ChunkySloth · 25/07/2021 09:29

Stollen.
Cheese footballs.
Mince pies.
Vol-au-vants.
Because I only ever see these on sale then, otherwise I'd buy them the rest of the time too.

EssexLioness · 25/07/2021 10:11

All the following, for health/ weight reasons. I have struggled with my weight on and off for 20 years and I have zero restraint around some foods. Plus I think it does make a Christmas feel more special if there are some special foods:
Cheese board and crackers
Croissants
Party food
Boxes of chocolates…. I used to be a serious chocoholic but weaned myself off a few years ago. Still enjoy it but very rarely buy any in at all: maybe 3-4 times a year max and I like having an assortment at Christmas to nibble
Mince pies/ fruit cake: don’t have these every Christmas but would never occur to me to eat them any other time of year.

Growing up we were very poor and I was often hungry. Christmas was seen as a big indulgence and my parents saved all year to go a bit crazy and we had loads of different cakes, chocolates, crisps, sweets, nuts, fancy nibbles etc. It was made extra special just knowing that I wouldn’t be hungry and having such a wide choice of snacks which I never had the rest of the year.

GreySea · 25/07/2021 10:15

Cheeseboard. I mean, I could have one for dinner every night if I’m honest, but we limit it to our Christmas night / Boxing Day treat and it is sooooo good!

ChicChaos · 25/07/2021 10:18

Pringles (I can inhale a tube), christmas pud, mince pies. Christmas biscuits such as lebkuchen and stollen cake.

We do eat turkey portions/steaks during the year, but only have a whole roast turkey at Christmas.

MaryBoBary · 25/07/2021 10:21

Agree with pate, twiglets, also baked Camembert at home.

Mince pies, on the other hand, I eat all year round. Can always buy a jar of mincemeat and some shortcrust pastry if ready made aren't available

Theoldcuriosityshop · 25/07/2021 10:36

I'm having turkey today.

Andante57 · 25/07/2021 11:32

Goose
Crackers (pulling variety)
Cranberry sauce
Christmas pudding
Brandy butter
Brussel sprouts

TheOnlyKoiInAPondOfGoldfish · 25/07/2021 11:37

@Onlinedilema

After Eight mints, they just scream. Christmas to me.
ditto! and Advocaat 🤣
JustGiveMeGin · 25/07/2021 11:41

All of these! This thread is making me feel all festive Grin I think somewhere in the deep recesses of my mind we don't have them to keep them 'special' for the Christmas period. If we had them all the time it would take something away from the Christmas season Hmm

Brackenandbramble · 25/07/2021 11:45

Tunnocks teacakes, a big box of them
Stuffing
Cheese board

PrettyBlunt · 25/07/2021 11:46

Celebrations. I'll only ever buy them at Christmas. Usually around Sept/Oct as I have a greedy DP so we end up going through a few tubs!

Also only do pigs in blankets at Christmas. You can do them all year round but I will only do them at Christmas.

PrettyBlunt · 25/07/2021 11:48

Turkey does not go on my plate at all, not even Christmas 🤮.

WellTidy · 25/07/2021 11:54

I was going to say Christmas pudding, but I make one for Christmas and one for Easter as it takes no extra effort to make two, and then I make the brandy cream at Easter rather than buy it as I do at Christmas, as you can’t buy it at Easter

Definitely mince pies and brandy butter

Brandy snaps

CrazyBaubles · 25/07/2021 12:49

Pate.
Sausage-meat stuffing.

A set of dips and breadsticks
Shortbread biscuits
Buck's Fizz
M&S pomegranate and cranberry Buck's Fizz (because it's only available at Christmas).

Cheeses - I buy cheddar and Brie throughout the year but never any others and never eat a cheese board unless it's Christmas.
Randomly a parent gave DH a mini cheese board as a teacher present - has 3 flavoured cheeses, a small jar of chutney and some crackers. Feels oddly decadent to have it in July!

We have Turkey throughout the year though - usually buy a few crowns in Jan when they're reduced, freeze and eat whether we fancy as we both love them.

Chikapu · 25/07/2021 12:54

Quality Street chocolates, they're only calorie-free at Christmas!

mrsjellaby · 25/07/2021 13:07

Home made trifle
Kilted sausages
Prawn cocktail

Because it's nice to have things that are special to Christmas Day

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 25/07/2021 13:14

I know this thread is about food, but for me Badedas bath foam. I always buy it in December, but never any other time of year.

lollipoprainbow · 25/07/2021 13:17

Gin! When I was younger we only had coke at Christmas and it was a real treat, my dad used to go out Christmas Eve for the Christmas drinks and came home with gin for my mum, whisky for him and Coke's for me, this was early 80's. We also only had satsumas at Christmas too.

Scarby9 · 25/07/2021 13:24

Less than we used to, and I miss it.

Growing up, we had a box of assorted chocolate biscuits that were ceremonially opened when the grandparents arrived and present opening begsn on Christmas day. So much excitement and the biscuits were amazing. Now chocolate biscuits are an everyday thing.

For me now, my 'only at Christmas and not until December' thing is Aldi Florentines. I could not risk having them more often becausr they are addictive.

sashh · 25/07/2021 13:55

Nothing.

OP

Pate and terrines are easy to make and fairly cheap.
