Living in Newcastle/Tynemouth.

Apologies for the barrage of threads but everyone was so helpful on my Chester/Durham thread.

I'm looking to move. Budget is 700k max but ideally no more than 650K. If it's less I certainly won't complain. Two or three bedroom home. I've no kids at present . It's just me and my two dogs.

I've decided that I want to be relatively near a good sized city. I like museums and theatres, eating out, observing wildlife and just pottering around towns and cities. I'm not fussed about nightlife. I'd like to be in a relatively safe area. I WFH but decent public transport would be an advantage.

I'm also strongly considering Chester(and a few other areas but that's another thread.

Tynemouth and Gosforth has been recommended to me. I wondered about Whitley Bay but someone on the other thread advised against it.

Any opinions on living in/around Newcastle would be very helpful. TIA

650 will buy your heart's desire, in fact 2/3 beds will struggle to spend it. It's all lovely, and the locals will be in shortly. I'm out near Amble, so I'm not the best judge. I will say that you can't smell the Greggs factory from Gosforth High Street.

I don’t know who put you off Whitley Bay. It’s a lovely place to live and has some very desirable houses. Obviously as with anywhere there are less desirable bits but overall it’s lovely, great vibe on park ave and the beach on the doorstep. What’s not to love?

Alternatively Tynemouth is also lovely as is cullercoats but houses are selling for way over asking currently - although your budget is way over what you’d need for a 2/3 bed place in these areas. The problem you’d have is finding a house in the first place.

What well under your budget could get you in a naice part of Whitley within sniffing distance of the sea.

It's probably a good thing if I can't smell the Greggs factory. I might bankrupt myself buying all of their cakes.

The person on the other thread mentioned the fog there. It's all subjective though. What appeals to one, won't to another. I'd still consider it but it's helpful to have both positive and negative opinions. Glad to hear that you like it, though appreciate that I may have to wait quite some time for a property.

Tynemouth begin its resurrection a good few years ahead of Whitley Bay, but Whitley Bay is now catching up fast.

It's good to hear that Whitley Bay is doing well. It's definitely still under consideration.

Tynemouth is lovely, beautiful beach and really nice atmosphere. My dh is from Gosforth and again another great place, bustling high street and great metro links, you could be in the city centre or coast in like 15 minutes! Some of the houses just off the High Street are amazing. Both places I would move to in a heartbeat if I had the budget!

LER83 And anyone else with experience of the area, would you prefer to live in Tynemouth or Gosforth? Would anyone recommend in and around the City Centre?

I think that I'd probably want to stick to the Metro line.

Lol. That sounds frustrating if you're local but it might keep me entertained. If I move I'll definitely have to try an episode or two.

If it's just the fog putting you off Whitley Bay, the same applies to Tynemouth just as much

My choice would be Tynemouth.

Gosforth is very Gosforthy (was always posh when I was growing up, and I have a lingering and unfair bias) with lots more traffic and just less space.

Tynemouth still has great transport links to Newcastle but has:

• the sea! International surfing centre, distant horizons
• the priory - just nice to have something so historic to walk past every day
• broad walks along the cliffs
• fabulous cafes

And yes, if you are thinking of moving north, you should watch Vera! There are very few landmarks where she hasn't found a body or interviewed a witness or just got out of her landrover for no good reason other than to show off the Northumberland / Newcastle scenery.

Tynemouth and Whitley Bay are on the metro line - there's also cullercoats station. I'd always choose by the coast ahead of gosforth. Yes you get a bit of sea fret and fog but I think you'll also get more for your money there

The fog doesn't bother me much. It was just the reason, well the main reason I think, a poster on the other thread mentioned preferring Tynemouth . Ty for letting me know it's no different in Tynemouth though.

I’d pick the coast over Gosforth, but if I was to live in a city suburb (of choice) it would be Gosforth. Tynemouth or Whitley Bay (they get the same fog!) near to the Metro for easy access to Newcastle sounds great to me.
You’ll have plenty of loose change on that budget as well.

Like previous posters, I'd say Tynemouth or Whitley Bay over Gosforth. Gosforth is nice but busy, lots of traffic, not as much space.
Tynemouth and Whitley Bay you have the beach, short metro ride to Newcastle city centre, nice little shops and easy access up the coast to Northumberland.
North Whitley Bay is the nicest bit - if you look at a map, anything north of Spanish City is a good bet.

As @Abouttimemum says, you would have no problem finding somewhere well within your budget.

Whitley Bay and Tynemouth any day for me! I'm not a fan of gosforth, it's quite boring in comparison to the coast. I much prefer Jesmond to Gosforth.
