Apologies for the barrage of threads but everyone was so helpful on my Chester/Durham thread.

I'm looking to move. Budget is 700k max but ideally no more than 650K. If it's less I certainly won't complain. Two or three bedroom home. I've no kids at present . It's just me and my two dogs.

I've decided that I want to be relatively near a good sized city. I like museums and theatres, eating out, observing wildlife and just pottering around towns and cities. I'm not fussed about nightlife. I'd like to be in a relatively safe area. I WFH but decent public transport would be an advantage.

I'm also strongly considering Chester(and a few other areas but that's another thread.

Tynemouth and Gosforth has been recommended to me. I wondered about Whitley Bay but someone on the other thread advised against it.

Any opinions on living in/around Newcastle would be very helpful. TIA

I'd better brush up on my bread knowledge. It's just rolls or morning rolls(a specific type here).

I've heard good things about Jesmond but I haven't really looked into it. I'll have to do so.

Ah! A morning roll, aka a bap.
Stotties are much more substantial.

GrealishHairband · 22/07/2021 15:55

Jesmond is lovely but student central in some places.

That's gorgeous. Thank you.

GrealishHairband

I'll have to keep that in mind then, thank you. I definitely want to avoid any studenty areas. That's one reason why I grudgingly took Durham off my list. I appreciate that most cities will have them but I like a relatively quiet life so I'd prefer to avoid such areas.

Tynemouth is lovely, I’d much prefer it over Gosforth. With your budget you could afford a gorgeous house. This one is near the beach and well under budget

If you want quiet how about a little more rural, there are many quiet areas in Northumberland that are no more than a 20 minute drive to Newcastle

Scarby9 · 22/07/2021 17:52

I just linked the same house, @MojoJojo71
It's a sign, OP!

NelleBee · 22/07/2021 18:07

Aye, people think that bread rolls are called Stotties in the NE but a Stottie is like a specific type of bread. Not all bread rolls are Stotties.

Well I live in Whitley Bay so I have to say you should choose here. Tynemouth is lovely too though. There’s not constant fog by the way but when we get a heatwave we also get a lovely sea breeze. Happy house hunting.

It is a particularly gorgeous house. It's very appealing so thank you both for the link.

lightswitchmoment

I hadn't considered going a little more rural until now but I'll definitely check out Northumberland.

Morpeth for me. Jesmond / Gosforth are lovely. Then Tynemouth followed by Cullercoates then Whitley Bay. But there again, Seaton Delaval all day long eating ice cream from the cafe on the roundabout. Long live Rhigis!

katienana · 22/07/2021 20:02

I'd go for Tynemouth over Gosforth. It's got its own high Street with independent shops, cafes pubs and restaurants, it's got a stunning beach, really nice park too. You can easily get into town on the metro for the theatre. Silverlink retail park has a cinema too. in fact Whitley Bay also has a theatre, and some lovely shops these days. I'd agree that it's becoming a desirable place to live and has some gorgeous houses. Also has the best ice cream shop, De Meos!

RaspberryRippledOut · 22/07/2021 20:20

I haven't considered Morpeth. I'll have to look into that.

Award winning fish and chips in the Spanish City at Christmas...

Morpeth is our local market town. It's got M&S, Yorkshire Trading for mousetraps and rural trousers, Lollo Rosso for Italian, Jasper's for fish, Lidl and Morrison's. Charming sandstone houses, 40 minutes to Newcastle by bus, rail services to everywhere.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 22/07/2021 22:21

Oh, and Waterstones.

Don't forget Rutherford's! Morpeth's own independent mini department store.

lightswitchmoment · 23/07/2021 13:40

Yes Morpeth is lovely. You've also got places like Hexham and Ponteland further inland from Newcastle. The budget will go far in this part of the world.

RaspberryRippledOut · 23/07/2021 14:19

I see that Morpeth had major floods in 2008 but flood defences were completed in 2017 so hopefully that's unlikely to be an issue now. It does look lovely.

I'll have to check the other areas for flooding.

Tynemouth/WB over Gosforth every single time.

*coastal
*less bloody roadworks
*coast
*better cafe/street culture
*the beach
*cleaner air
*less up it's own arse
*did I mention the coast?

I was just about to link that one!

BigasdaB · 23/07/2021 14:32

Tynemouth is beautiful, good access to beaches.
It has antique market in the station every weekend, plenty of cafes and loads of walks.
Gosforth is much much busier, I work in Gosforth and oh my the traffic!!
So in my opinion Tynemouth over Gosforth but I also really like Whitley Bay however I think Tynemouth is more ‘naice’.

gingercat02 · 23/07/2021 14:43

I live in Whitley Bay, it's a lovely little town. Loads of independent bars, restaurants and shops. You could buy 2 of my 4 bed detached for your budget amp.theguardian.com/money/2019/jul/12/lets-move-to-whitley-bay-tyne-and-wear
Tynemouth is seen as more classy but you are looking at much more expensive housing (and my friend regularly has very very drunk people vomiting in her street).

RobinPenguins · 23/07/2021 14:50

Gosforth is great but £700k won’t get your absolute heart’s desire unless your heart’s desire is modest/nice rather than really spectacular. The traffic can be bad but only if you need to involve the High Street. Avoid Great Park which is usually lumped in with Gosforth by estate agents but is entirely different and not what it sounds like you’re looking for.

Apart from a select few parts, Jesmond is much too studenty. Brandling Park or High West Jesmond areas are an ok mix, and Brandling Park has some beautiful houses.

Gosforth beats the coast for me. Tynemouth & Whitley Bay are just that little bit too far from the city. But I’m an extreme case as I like to be within walking distance of a city centre.

RampantIvy · 23/07/2021 14:56

@GrealishHairband

Jesmond is lovely but student central in some places.
It's a mixtures of students and families. You need to stay away from Osborne Road where all the bars are.

There are some fine Victorian terrace houses in Jesmond and some really nice little shops to mooch around, and some brilliant restaurants.

Morpeth is lovely. DH is from Northumberland so I have spent a lot of time there. Glad to hear Rutherfords is still going strong. I was sad when Smail's closed (Smale's?). It was a real treasure trove.
