Positive and negative!

I went to Las Vegas, glad I went, but no desire to return! :)

Would never return to Warwick Castle. It's quite over rated...and not much even happened there, it just looks the part! :)

@cruisecrazy - yes, it was our honeymoon (Maldives)! DH’s choice. We went there for the diving, but then I fell pregnant and they wouldn’t loan me the kit.

@ButYouGottaHaveASkillJeff unless you’re really into diving, it’s pretty much just eating, sex (assuming you’ve bought a wiling partner), spa, read book on beach, read book on terrace, eat again, bit of snorkelling, more food, more sex, bed

ahoyshipmates · 22/07/2021 19:17

The far end of Cornwall. It is nice, but it is so darn far away and I can't abide the interminable jams and roadworks on the A30 or the A303.

It has taken me longer to drive home from a holiday in Cornwall than it did to fly back from a holiday in Kenya.

@waterlego

Actually just realise Eureka was in Northern California, not Oregon, but there were places like that in Oregon too.
Are you confusing it with Eugene? I was up that way , Roseburg , lots of sort of run down housing .Stunning scenery and nice ppl - most of whom had never met a European Smile
GiantKitten · 22/07/2021 19:17

@waterlego

New York.

To be fair, we were only there a few days and it was August so the heat and humidity was unbearable. I would probably give it another chance in autumn or spring but there are a lot of other places I’d go to first.

@waterlego definitely give it a go in spring or autumn. August there is a sauna! We’ve been in May and October, and it was lovely both times. There can be hot days, but it’s not humid, and also in late October you can catch some fall foliage Smile

Paris, grubby and we went on a bus tour but the traffic was so bad we didn't move for an hour!

Croatia, some lovely places (eg. plitvice lakes) but it was hard to dodge the coach and cruise masses at times and I don't think we ate a single nice meal whilst there. The food just wasn't for us.

placemats · 22/07/2021 19:19

Cornwall.

I'll happily go back to Suffolk but not Norfolk.

I will never visit Amsterdam again.

MaryBoBary · 22/07/2021 19:20

@rothbury

Japan. Felt really unsafe the whole time. Would never return.
That's a shame, Japan is beautiful, I've been watching lots of documentaries recently and the countryside is beautiful. What exactly made you feel unsafe?
cjpark · 22/07/2021 19:20

Orlando - Artifical, man made, plasticky, crap food.
Jamaica - felt very on edge and had a seedy threatening uncurrent outside the resort.

Leftbutcameback · 22/07/2021 19:23

Hong Kong. It was interesting, only a couple of days on the way to NZ, but I felt too hemmed in by the huge towers and I struggled with the food. Glad I went though to see somewhere completely different. Next time I'd do a stopover in Singapore

RadioSixMusicLover · 22/07/2021 19:24

liked New York but we did think it was a lot like London in the 70s

Zilla1 · 22/07/2021 19:32

I think there's a difference between not likely a place 'because I had to see poor people' and feeling bad or disgusted from empathy because some places accept grinding poverty and seeing people on the street having untreated MH crises beyond the levels of poverty and homlessness that someone might see at home.

Pokkadots · 22/07/2021 19:32

Borth in Wales

Los Angeles--the worst, most pointless of so-called cities
London
Brussels
San Francisco
Edinburgh
Birmingham
Athens
Venice

Liverpool
the state of Connecticut
Las Vegas and the rest of Nevada
Indiana and Ohio
cruise ships
Oblications at my in-laws house sleeping on a blow-up mattress in their study reading old Prevention magazines and not going anywhere.

I find it really difficult to see poverty and people in crisis situations not because it offends me but because it distresses me. I especially hate seeing incredible wealth alongside incredible poverty.
AmandaHoldensLips · 22/07/2021 19:40

Wales.

Zilla1 · 22/07/2021 19:40

@Comedycook, me too and I got that impression from many of the PPs too. I hate poverty at home and hate seeing extremes abroad too.

RaraRachael · 22/07/2021 19:40

Paris - hated the vast open spaces, couldn't seem to navigate the Metro, couldn't find decent, reasonably priced food and the only place I've visited where I didn't feel safe. We had 4 incidents of being approached by shady people in broad daylight in busy areas so goodness knows what it must be like at night.

Absolutely hated it and would never contemplate going back.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 22/07/2021 19:44

Zante. The party side of the island is an absolute shit hole.

Key west. It's a weekend destination only. Nothing happens in the week. Locals ended up asking us why we were there.

Bulgaria, stayed in a friends villa when buying property was a thing. Realised we looked like incredibly rich western tourists in a slightly inland non tourist area. Felt quite scared at times.

Bath, lovely

Barcelona, adore it.

DeedledeDee · 22/07/2021 19:44

@Amdone123

Blackpool - awful place, even with children.

Dublin - overpriced. Could have been in any city in the world. Nothing special not even the bars. Rip off.

London - I felt like a caged animal.
Disney World - we did it with a 4 year old so a good holiday but no desire to go back. To anywhere in America tbh.

Santorini - lovely place and people but felt a bit false, like they just wanted to rip us off. Our transfer to airport didn't turn up and no one could help us. We couldn't even jump in a taxi because there weren't any. Got to the airport just in time and felt like I was in an episode of Banged Up Abroad.

What a pity about santorini, I went there in 1985 when we had to get a boat from Crete as there was no airport then,

It was charming then and quiet

My exes bed!

maddiemookins16mum · 22/07/2021 19:45

Dymchurch. A very depressing place for a holiday.

SingingSands · 22/07/2021 19:46

Cyprus in 2003. Thought it was a horrible place and have never gone back.

Gerwurtztraminer · 22/07/2021 19:46

@MagicSummer I was surprised too! I was really expecting to like it after all I'd heard. Yes we saw a rehearsal at the Spanish Riding School, and had a guided your behind the scenes. That was fine, it was the city itself I couldn't warm to. I've discovered I prefer old rambling medieval type places with some atmospheric dinginess! For example many people loathe Naples but I love it!

gentilleprof · 22/07/2021 19:47

Tivoli

loopylindi · 22/07/2021 19:53

Someone wants to know what's wrong with Las Vegas.....it would be hard to describe what's right with it (except for its proximity to the Grand Canyon) It epitomises everything that's wrong with the American culture - brash, brassy, over indulgent and huge. Everything is designed to shout at full volume LOOK AT ME. It's so hot and everywhere is air conditioned so diving into hotel lobbies and casinos seems like paradise with their super cooled air. Because it's in the middle of a desert there is lots of heat and no breeze - think this week and add 10degrees or so.
Having said that the trip to the Grand Canyon was awesome in the true sense of the word.
