Positive and negative!

I went to Las Vegas, glad I went, but no desire to return! :)

Would never return to Warwick Castle. It's quite over rated...and not much even happened there, it just looks the part! :)

@Comedycook

I really dislike the South of France and Paris...love the North though!
Hated South of France. Nowhere to eat, can't park. Love Paris though, and we have a good week there with the kids.
LoveFall · 22/07/2021 18:10

Las Vegas. It was hot, dirty, tacky, and crowded. We could not walk down the street without multiple offers from both men and women for paid sex.

Just yuck.

Sad to see Florida named so often though - I honestly wonder how many ever get beyond the theme parks and the horrible clip joints which surround them like flies on a turd.

I've been to Florida and have never set foot in a theme park there. Stayed for a week or so in the keys, some of which were lovely (not Largo though) then headed out on a road trip up I95 to Boston and eventually Niagara Falls.

I think it's a funny state. Weird politics. Miami beach was okay, but most of that city felt incredibly threatening and intimidating. As for most of the rest of it, I suppose it's okay if you like humidity in the 90s, miles of mangrove swamps, alligators and the smell of rotting vegetation (first thing that hit me when getting off the plane in Miami Intl).

I don't think I'd rush back, although I wouldn't mind seeing Cape Canaveral.

I’m shocked at all the posters saying Oxford. I have recently fallen in love with the place. That said, all of my visits have been since the start of the pandemic, so maybe that has something to do with it. I imagine it’s quite a different place when busy with tourists.

feellikeanalien · 22/07/2021 18:11

M'diq in Morocco. Did a day trip from Gibraltar and thought we were going to Tangier. Turns out the day we went was the only day the boat didn't go to Tangier.

We were hassled from the moment the boat arrived with a particularly dodgy pair of "taxi drivers" offering to take us into the mountains. I imagine if we had said yes we would never have been seen again.

The souk was quite interesting but the whole place was really smelly and the crossing from Gibraltar was really rough.. A coach party had got on the ferry and were being really loud. By the time we got to the middle of the Straits the had all fallen silent or had their heads over the side. When we got back to the UK we read in a guide book that one town to avoid in Morocco was M'diq!!

I've never been so glad to see Gibraltar again in my life!

deadflowers · 22/07/2021 18:11

India, Belfast, Florida.

Abhannmor · 22/07/2021 18:14

I second LA. Like somebody emptied Essex out over a desert. Dublin...over priced, over rated and stressful and I'm Irish. A sort of mini me London.

camouflagejacket · 22/07/2021 18:15

@alexdgr8 that sounds nice. I just wanted somewhere to lkick my feet back and look at the view.

Caligal · 22/07/2021 18:17

I was surprised how lovely the beach was in Benidorm. I think some parts of the old town still have some authentic charm.

alexdgr8 · 22/07/2021 18:19

re Japan and their legal system; apparently there is no concept of consent, or lack of it, re sexual assault.
a woman who reports she was raped has to re-enact the scene in front of a group of male police, and explain why she didnt effectively fight him off.
and there is a bit of a strange attitude towards schoolgirls in uniform who are encouraged to stand around on street corners so middle aged men can enjoy looking at them.
it is a strange culture to understand from uk point of view.
in other ways very clean, orderly, little crime, technologically advanced.

In the UK, I was bitterly disappointed by Elgin but the rest of Moray is beautiful.

But… but…

I'm amazed at all the people saying Oxford. I find it much more inviting than Cambridge. Gorgeous botanical gardens, walk or punt along the river by Christchurch Meadows, wild swim at Port Meadow, all the lovely indie shops in and around the Covered Market, lunch at The Ivy, exploring the libraries and colleges and staying for evensong, classic art at the Ashmolean or modern art at Moma and strange Harry Potterish objects at Pitt Rivers. There's always a lunchtime concert on and candlelit music in some gorgeous college chapel or open air theatre in college gardens or university parks. Hours in Blackwells. I never get bored there.

Caligal · 22/07/2021 18:20

I have heard that time and time again about LA.

Laguna Beach however was incredible, genuinely like the OC! Beach was incredible and it was clean and beautiful, lots of amazing food and art galleries. Thoroughly recommend for a trip to California instead of LA

IsThePopeCatholic · 22/07/2021 18:20

Disneyworld Florida. What a load of crap.

Actually, you've got a point Grin
MarieIVanArkleStinks · 22/07/2021 18:22

Lots resonates here.

Cairo. I'm with the downvote. Sexual harassment, awful intrusive tipping culture, someone is always in your face. The warnings we received on visiting the pyramids about scammers/hustlers there were vaguely alarming. We also saw dead horses in a canal.

Naples: only Italian city I've been to that I don't like. It has a nasty atmosphere about it. Love Venice but top vote goes to Florence.

Baltimore. Not pretty.

St. Petersburg sounds similar to the PP's experiences of Moscow. Fascinating history, the Hermitage is one everyone should see. But there's an aura of corruption around that place too. The pollution is horrific, there was a stinking brown miasma clouding the whole city, and some of the conditions in which people still live were horrible. The humidity wasn't great here, too: apparently it's bad enough to peel fresco paint off the walls. Plus in winter it doesn't get light until noon. Not my favourite!

Beachy Head. It's too notorious for reasons other than a point of natural beauty and you can't escape that for a second. The signs and commemorations of it are everywhere. It seems to reverberate with other people's misery and despair (in a way mostly peaceful cemeteries don't). I couldn't say precisely why. And I get nervous seeing people hanging around too close to the edge. The place is dangerous and it feels unpleasant.

I have a love/hate relationship with London.

HotSauceCommittee · 22/07/2021 18:23

Only one place in a vast a lovely country: Damnoen Saduak floating market. It's horrible and just a to rip off tourists.

romatheroamer · 22/07/2021 18:24

I used to love Paris but haven't been for ages so a bit worried to see all the negative comments...hope it hasn't changed that much. Tend to be more of a big city person,
Gibraltar..once is enough and...Stroud.

thenewduchessofhastings · 22/07/2021 18:24

Skegness;awful place

careerchangeperhaps · 22/07/2021 18:26

Los Angeles. Glad I've been but it was a shithole and I have no desire to revisit.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/07/2021 18:28

Toledo, Spain. Amazing historical buildings among plastic, reproduction "historical" buildings.

ramarama · 22/07/2021 18:29

Singapore

Kuala Lumpur

Snooze central, so sanitised

LastSummerHere · 22/07/2021 18:34

I think I know what you mean about being glad to have been...my husband travels to California for work twice a year (usually) and on one of the next upcoming trips, I'm planning to go too. It isn't that I think it will be amazing...it's just that I have grown up hearing about Hollywood, Melrose, Malibu, Death Valley, San Francisco.....I just want to see it!!!

TheCrowening · 22/07/2021 18:34

@brokenbiscuitsx

Bristol.

Never been hassled so much by so many beggars (for money) Even sat outside in a restaurant, one became really aggressive too. Not even had that in London or New York. It was sold to me as a ‘vibey’ ‘funky’ place but unless you see beggars harassing you as vibey then I’m really confused!

I’ve seen both sides of Bristol. I do like it and there’s some lovely bars but my goodness yes the aggressive beggars.

You can literally do all these things in Cambridge, too. Botanical garden, walk or punt, wild swim, indie shops, lunch at The Ivy, libraries and colleges (but less hidden behind walls than in Oxford), evensong, classic art, modern art, lunch time concerts, open air concerts and theatre, Blackwells. The only thing it hasn’t done is sold out to Harry Potter.
