Positive and negative!

I went to Las Vegas, glad I went, but no desire to return! :)

Would never return to Warwick Castle. It's quite over rated...and not much even happened there, it just looks the part! :)

Enniskillen and Newry. Both very grubby.
@MsTSwift I’m baffled by the Paris and Rome hate, I’ve found the Romans incredibly hospitable and the Parisians surprised me with their welcome, along with two great cities to explore

I do love France so maybe biast
I absolutely loved Paris and Rome but can see why others wouldn’t.
I’m Paris, I saw a man slap a woman on the face when she caught him going through her bag. No one batted an eyelid. I had many attempts to steal made on my own bags which I have never had anywhere else is the world. And like, Rome it’s very misogynistic. I saw men masturbating on public transport a couple of times in Rome.

They’re quite intimidating places for women. For me, this was balanced out by all the amazing things I saw but I can totally see how it wouldn’t be for others.

PrettyLittleFlies · 22/07/2021 17:27

East Croydon.

robotcollision · 22/07/2021 17:27

Italy. I love it but I have been there a lot and I just want to discover other countries. DH keeps going on about our next holiday abroad being to Rome or Florence and I think, really? Again?

MegBusset · 22/07/2021 17:28

Edinburgh. So many tourists!
Center Parcs. Middle-class Butlins, again utterly heaving.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/07/2021 17:29

@SomeSix

I vowed never to return to Moscow but did 13 years later to find it much improved. Was only 18 first time and on an escorted tour which would be part of the problem.

China - glad I went mid 00s but no desire to go back.

Same choices.

I spent 3 days in Moscow and I'm glad I've been but it felt like we'd covered it. It was hard work trying to communicate (far worse than any of China) and we were nervous about getting caught up with any scam Police "fines" after lots of warnings about corruption.

I've been to China twice, once via the Trans-Siberian, and via the whole length from Hong Kong to Mongolia. It was amazing, it was safe. I liked the people as individuals and it was straightforwards to travel there. But the politics has changed since the Olympic era when we were there and while all was not hunkydory then, it is worse now. Tibet was absolutely astounding, but the oppression and censorship there is very real. There is a lot of homogenising and Disneyfication of the culture going on.
Maybe not never again, but not under current trends. It's sad that so much genuine history and culture is swept away and rewritten by the authorities.

Seville I didn't "get". People tend to love it. I wonder if I went to bed before it woke up as I wasn't well. It felt dead in the day to the point where we went to the cinema to watch Scooby Doo despite the language barrier just to pass the time and keep cool.

Vienna was also dull. Maybe it was a bit too grand and high-brow for me? Loved most of the Central/ East European cities we went to that summer. I'd be put off Budapest purely because of the hideous taste of the water Grin

I've never regretted going anywhere though (other than Centre Parks with a 5m old, at least it was only a weekend!)

Milliways · 22/07/2021 17:29

Lands End & John oGroats. The scenery approaching both is great but the actual touristy bits are so tacky.

Amsterdam, please I went but not for me, much preferred Bruges.

knittingaddict · 22/07/2021 17:29

We went to Oxford in January/February 2020 and I liked it. The Ashmolean was great, but didn't see much more of the city. My husband was most likely spreading CV around at the time as he was ill with all the classic symptoms. I went down with it on the way home. Sorry Oxford. Blush

shewalkslikerihanna · 22/07/2021 17:30

Paphos for me too
I don’t know what I e petted but I think I expected more than what was on offer

Bridlington... I really wasn’t expecting much and I wasn’t disappointed

We had a three day break near Wakefield and I was told by a local it was a bit of a dump
I really liked the town centre, the range of shops and cathedral

I’ve been to far, far worse

See top of post lol

shewalkslikerihanna · 22/07/2021 17:30

Hereslurkingatyoukid · 22/07/2021 17:30

Dublin is the pits. So, so overpriced and boring

hellcatspangle · 22/07/2021 17:31

Wouldn't go back to Rio de Janeiro. Enjoyed the trip up sugarloaf and seeing Christ the redeemer but a lot of it felt a bit grubby and unsafe. Didn't help that the weather was very grey the whole time we were there - everywhere feels better in the sunshine.

Comedycook · 22/07/2021 17:32

Oh agree, Paphos was disappointing. Not horrible, just a bit meh

davidrosejumper · 22/07/2021 17:32

@JassyRadlett

Yosemite. Glad I went, spectacular views but I wouldn’t go back - it was a bit too touristy and catering to a very specific type of tourist, though we were in the main area which probably contributed. DH and I went on a couple of decent but not crazily strenuous walks and most people we encountered thought we were either mad or very intrepid.
I so agree. Had the same thing in Yellowstone, was just a theme park in the summer. The Guardian did a nice series on US national parks a year or so ago, where they were talking about the pressures on them.

Also, any place that is considered 'instagrammable'. People hogging the best view for a good ten minutes to take hundreds of photos.

I agree. I didn't like it either.
Comedycook · 22/07/2021 17:34

@PrettyLittleFlies

East Croydon.
It's better than West Croydon!
TheAirbender · 22/07/2021 17:34

Thailand
Pevensey
All theme parks

Witchinthesticks · 22/07/2021 17:35

Mevagissey in Cornwall.
I remember going as a child and thought it was lovely. It is now a heaving, tat filled dump and I’ll never go back. Totally spoiled my memories.

Timeandtune · 22/07/2021 17:38

Plockton- Scottish Highlands. I come out in hives just thinking about it. Didn’t do my research properly. Too remote, weather disappointing. Had to drive to shops etc etc

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 22/07/2021 17:38

Canberra. It actually kind of intrigues me that the Australians chose to build a new capital city and design it to be completely lacking in architectural interest, actually interest of any kind. Perhaps the architect really hated politicians?

Elderflower14 · 22/07/2021 17:39

@BogRollBOGOF Same for me with Vienna... Enjoyed what I saw but wouldn't return... Am hoping to take my son to Amsterdam next year. I went in 2003...

Caligal · 22/07/2021 17:40

You definitely should! I have never experienced the sweltering heat as never been in summer but it was ridiculously cold when I went at end of Jan/Feb - minus 6 I believe! When I went in October the weather was just right! Some really sunny days and some cooler ones, a bit of rain - a good mix.

I think it’s the kind of place you need to go with an idea of places to eat drink and see but too many people have a militant itinery and it becomes more of a chore!! And I can imagine difficult with young children!!

GiantKitten · 22/07/2021 17:40

@CatherineAragon

Madeira. Why do so many people go there every year? It’s so incredibly dull.
We really liked Madeira - especially in late January, very pleasant weather and lots of interesting walks around Funchal. Mind you we are OAPs, so we will like dull things Wink (Crowds off the cruise ships could be a bit overwhelming at times tbh, but at least reinforced our desire never to try it!)

Agree with people saying Morocco/Marrakech. Hated it. Felt uncomfortable and anxious the whole time.

shewalkslikerihanna · 22/07/2021 17:40

Loved Benidorm in 1974 when it was still quaint and you could still see fishermen landing their catch
Went back in 2016 and it was like
What the hell happened here
Apparently it has more high rises than New York
It was grim

BaronessOfTheNorth · 22/07/2021 17:42

Paris.
