Everybody Loves Raymond

But why?
The man is an obnoxious oaf with a toxic family, who treats his wife with disdain and disrespect all the time. He doesn't pull his weight round the house and has a whiny voice.
Deborah needs to leave the bastard.

My thoughts exactly and I cannot understand why such a whiney baby is the favourite of his mum. But it happens.......

Antiqueanniesmagiclanternshow · 21/07/2021 13:54

It is so weird. There could be so many threads about it!

MasterOfOne · 21/07/2021 13:55

Completely agree!

I often think of Raymond's mum when there are posts about "Toxic MILs"

LH1987 · 21/07/2021 13:59

Just started watching this, and I am not sensitive but he is terrible! She has three kids and he goes away all the time and does nothing when he gets back. Makes me slightly more appreciative of my DH.

CherryPlumCrow · 21/07/2021 14:06

He is a completely useless man-baby. I love his family though especially Frank Grin

RubyGoat · 21/07/2021 14:08

DH & I used to have this on the TV sometimes in the mornings before I had to leave for work. Can't stand it now, it's too close to home. (The mother/MIL.) Claustrophobic, manipulative relationship, the other brother who still lived at home well into adulthood, the lack of boundaries. If it was current day instead of 20 years ago (ish?) Deborah would have got social media, got a job & left them to their borderline incestuous little codependent family dynamic. I hope. She would have been on medication in RL, surely. Especially in America.

TheEelOfMisfortune · 21/07/2021 14:11

Everybody does not love Raymond though. His fans do because they don't know him. His mother does because she can use that love to manipulate everyone around her. That's the fun paradox of the title.

The father, the wife, the brother, the sister in law, the brother's brother in law and everyone he comes into contact with and the kids all see thought him for what he is. If I was married to him I wouldn't even bother to chew through the restraints!

lucysnowe2 · 21/07/2021 14:17

The title is kind of ironic though. Such a classic! I love how toxic the whole family is. Later seasons only got better - love Amy and her mum!

BorderlineHappy · 21/07/2021 14:38

Raymond's father isy favourite.
You can feel the disdain for everyone dripping off him.

Deborah has the patience of a saint.
I'd have a murder charge by now.
How could she find him anyway attractive.
He's a big child.

sunshinepunch · 21/07/2021 15:05

The brother was/is a much better actor. Ray's jokes are just not funny.

What about Frasier! I used to watch years ago and mildly liked it. Nowadays it really makes me smile. Such a weird family dynamic though..

SeeYaBeYa · 21/07/2021 15:06

I can't see the point of this programme.

CherryPlumCrow · 21/07/2021 16:24

@SeeYaBeYa

I can't see the point of this programme.

It's funny.

MarmaladeToastAndAMarmaladeCat · 21/07/2021 16:27

I can’t watch this show because my mil is exactly like Raymond’s mum and it’s just too close to home Grin

Disfordarkchocolate · 21/07/2021 16:29

God I hate this programme, they are all truly awful people. Apart from Amy's Mum who is lovely.

Mrsjayy · 21/07/2021 16:34

I think the point Is Raymond thinks everyone loves him he is basically an arsehole!

Now Frasier is an absolute masterpiece. Fantastic writing and the physical comedy is wonderful!

I liked the programme but I agree Raymond is irritating. Occasional episodes were comic genius. Such as when Raymond' s cousin worked for him. I can watch that episode over again. There was a scene in another episode where Raymond was with his parents and brother. At one point the scene paused, brilliant comic timing from all four actors.

drudgewithagrudge · 21/07/2021 18:29

Raymond must be red hot in bed because there must be some reason that Deborah stays with him.

EvilPea · 21/07/2021 18:32

Frasier has aged brilliantly - or I’m now the right age to appreciate it.

WingingItSince1973 · 21/07/2021 18:34

I used to love watching it but I can't cope with the shouting now.

StarryNight468 · 21/07/2021 18:36

I love frasier, absolute classic 👌

Sisisimone · 21/07/2021 18:37

Exactly this. That's why its so funny. The brother is brilliant in it. Its very dated now but still makes me laugh if it's on. I think in its heyday it had the highest ratings ever recorded for a sitcom.

vincettenoir · 21/07/2021 18:41

I totally agree. It’s quite old now - I think it was more in context with the social mores of its time and it has aged badly. I have seen Ray Romano in other things and he can actually be pretty funny but he is an annoying caricature in this.

Laiste · 21/07/2021 19:08

I thought this was going to be about Raymond Blanc and was going to agree.

I'll get my coat ...

woodfort · 21/07/2021 19:12

You don’t get to ruin Everybody Loved Raymond for me…!
