How do you pronounce Covid?!

You know when someone pronounces a word completely different from what you have ever heard before?
I just wondered if anyone else pronounced it differently.
Someone today pronounced it Cov-id
Rather than cove-id.

Is this common? Have I only just noticed?!

YABU - it's cov-id
YANBU - it's definitely cove-id

I’m sure it’s cove-id but my DH says Cov-id which really grates.

Co - vid. As does almost everyone else as far as I can tell. There is someone in government (can't remember who) who insists on pronouncing it Cov - id. (probably some complete tit like Michael Gove or Jacob Rees Mogg) I consider this to be attention seeking. I'd like to ask them if they also pronounce Corona as Cor - onn -a.

It's only a matter of time though until the BBC starts pronouncing it Cov- id. The BBC loves to take a weird silly pronunciation and run with it.

As it's short for Corona Virus Disease, you could annoy people further by insisting on Cov eye dee

Cove-id

I work in critical care and out of over 100 members of staff only ONE solitary person pronounces it cov-id. Pretty sure he does it for effect though as he’s that type…..

waltzingparrot · 21/07/2021 13:36

Michael Gove and Dr John Campbell always say Cov-id so they've been spreading that pronunciation on the telly.

They're both from up north, so is it a regional thing?

AntiWorkBrigade · 21/07/2021 13:38

I once heard a (British) journalist speaking on the news who pronounced Theresa May’s first name differently to how everyone else says it. This was while she was PM. I wondered if he was making a point or just couldn’t hear the difference. Quite jarring.

I'm going to channel my inner Hyacinth Bouquet and start pronouncing it with a silent 'd'.

Cove-id or one some local accents, cor-vid.

You mean exactly the same as cove-vid but the added extra of a pendantic response?

Then yes. That.

My mum says "covoid" which drives me mad!

bibbidybobbidyboo · 21/07/2021 14:14

I have a friend who I recently saw for the first time in person since the pandemic and I discovered that he says covid to rhyme with horrid. I thought it was really weird because I hadn't heard it anywhere else, but he works at a big health charity so I wondered if that was the official line or something.

PeonyTime · 21/07/2021 14:22

I'd pronounce
Cove - id differently to Ko - vid

I'd pronounce it Ko - vid

magsbagsfags · 21/07/2021 14:23

I pronounce it the normal way like 99.99% of the world - cove-id.

My boss says it co-vid
