How do you pronounce Covid?!

You know when someone pronounces a word completely different from what you have ever heard before?
I just wondered if anyone else pronounced it differently.
Someone today pronounced it Cov-id
Rather than cove-id.

Is this common? Have I only just noticed?!

YABU - it's cov-id
YANBU - it's definitely cove-id

@AmyDudley

Co - vid. As does almost everyone else as far as I can tell. There is someone in government (can't remember who) who insists on pronouncing it Cov - id. (probably some complete tit like Michael Gove or Jacob Rees Mogg) I consider this to be attention seeking. I'd like to ask them if they also pronounce Corona as Cor - onn -a.

It's only a matter of time though until the BBC starts pronouncing it Cov- id. The BBC loves to take a weird silly pronunciation and run with it.

Fucking Gove
Covidatemyhomework · 21/07/2021 14:50

My DM used to call it corvid. Now it’s morphed into covit (pronounced cove-it). Drives me up.the.wall…

Mrstreehouse · 21/07/2021 14:57

I’m still trying to work out how covid can possibly rhyme with horrid? 🧐

My dh says paMdemic, which makes me want to divorce him immediately.
SeeYaBeYa · 21/07/2021 15:02

Gove was the one who started pronouncing it cov-id. I'm pretty sure it was to avoid any negative association with the sound of his own damn fool name. Other people - those who want him to rise - did the same and so the monster was created.

So yeah basically if you pronounce it cov-id then you love Gove.

The choice, as they say, is yours.

Badhabits1 · 21/07/2021 15:02

The automated message when you ring my doctor’s surgery says ‘Corvid -19’ in a strong Welsh accent.

EileenGC · 21/07/2021 15:02

CO-vid (to rhyme with go) when I speak English, but English is my fourth out of seven languages - all used regularly - and in all the others it’s pronounced Co-VEED. Long ee most of the times, and emphasis on the last syllable. So more than one time I’ve been speaking in English to someone but the other pronunciation has slipped in, because that’s how I say it 80% of the time.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 21/07/2021 15:04

it is michael gove who pronounces it differently than others, covid, to rhyme with horrid.
horrid little man

Saggybaggyaggy · 21/07/2021 15:07

Not a pedantic response! They are said completely differently.

Cove, as it what you find on a beach. Plus id. Cove - id.

Ko - as in how the first syllable of Coca-Cola starts. Plus vid as in video. Ko - vid.

Don't ask the question re pronunciation then pretend different phonetic spellings sound the same.

AmyDudley · 21/07/2021 15:09

I don't think Gove can claim it is a Scottish pronunciation. None of my Scottish friends (or my Scottish XH) pronounce it this way. Gove does it because he's a a total wanker (or Waaahnker as he'd probably say)

iklboo · 21/07/2021 15:12

Ko pronounced like Coca-cola sounds exactly the same as co in my accent. Co-vid.

Cazzovuoi · 21/07/2021 15:16

How the fuck are people pronouncing it with an R?!

CORVID?! I’d think you had a bang on the head if you said it to me Grin

‘Cove’ and ‘cola’ have the same ‘co’ sound in my accent. Maybe it’s the same for OP. In my accent, ‘cove-id’ and ‘ko-vid’ sound the same. It’s all good, people are different.
Avelandra · 21/07/2021 15:21

I have spent ages saying cove and coca cola to myself to see how they could possibly sound differentGrin

PeskyRooks · 21/07/2021 15:24

That's weird about Michael Gove's pronunciation because it should rhyme with his actual name!
People should start calling him Michael Gov

CiaoForNiao · 21/07/2021 15:24

Co-vid. I've never heard anyone pronounce it any other way.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 21/07/2021 15:29

I can hear the difference between cove-id and co-vid 🤷

PlasticCupPolitics · 21/07/2021 15:30

Feel it’s time for Mumsnet to introduce voice notes, I need to know how the “co” in “cola” sounds different to the “co” in “cove”

Terrazzo · 21/07/2021 15:31

And @Saggybaggyaggy of course phonics vary depending on accent - an Californian ‘oo’ for example is not the same as a Bristolian oo is not the same as an Liverpudlian oo is not the same as an Australian oo.

CiaoForNiao · 21/07/2021 15:36

I think the co in cove and the co in cola sound the same.
But co vid and cove id don't. The split in the word is in a different place.

Yep because it sounds exactly the same to me. To the person who says how can it sound like horrid, I'm presuming they're saying it like covvid?

The difference is in which part of the word the stress is on. Cove-id you stress the cove, co-vid you stress the vid.
PaulaPetunia · 21/07/2021 15:43

I call it The Cov-id. I think it deserves an article.

Nohomemadecandles · 21/07/2021 15:44

@waltzingparrot

Michael Gove and Dr John Campbell always say Cov-id so they've been spreading that pronunciation on the telly.

They're both from up north, so is it a regional thing?

No, it fecking well isn't! Grin

Cohhhhhvid as opposed to CoVid - I don't think it really matters.

WestendVBroadway · 21/07/2021 15:50

@CherieBabySpliffUp, sht I read your post as can't* hear the difference. My apologies Blush
