Best cooling fan please!

Just that really. Have you bought a good one?

Are Dysons worth the huge cost? Or will something a lot cheaper do the job?

I need something that’s portable and easy to store in the winter and am getting bamboozled by the choice on line!
TIA

We can see this thread is a few years old so some of the suggestions may be out of stock, but we've recently updated our best tower fan and best pedestal fan pages if you're looking for something to cool your home down this summer. We also have guides to the best handheld fan and desk fan too, if you're looking for something more compact and budget-friendly. We hope they help.

I have bought a Meaco 1056 fan this year and it is amazing. Still expensive at about £100, but nowhere near the cost of a Dyson. I would recommend it.

Howshouldibehave · 20/07/2021 12:46

Dyson fans are noisy, expensive and ineffectual.

I would choose a Meaco every time! We have several different ones and they are all brilliant.

sashh · 20/07/2021 12:49

I have portable air con, I currently have two, one in the living room and one in the bedroom.

They are noisy but I'm used to it so can sleep through.

It will cost you less than a dyson.

I've ordered one from Amazon arriving today. Will update once I've tried it

Meaco are brilliant, I have the which approved one, very quiet, powerful, remote control, would recommend.

PrancingQueen · 20/07/2021 13:12

Thanks all for your quick replies!
I’ve never heard of Meaco, off to have a look now.

If you’re going to buy a Meaco-buy directly from them, not Amazon. Their customer service is much better!

Becca19962014 · 20/07/2021 13:28

I've a neck fan, had it for weeks as anything over 25c is life threatening for me, and we've had odd days when it's got that hot here, last two days have been over 30c though. Its great as I can wear it wherever I go and it's got a built in ioniser, assuming I can go anywhere (can't right now as too ill). Whist that's charging (couple of hours) I use a cooling scarf. I've a bag of cooling beads for injuries I put on my head as well.

No room for air con where I am, nor any money!

DragonWillow · 20/07/2021 13:35

I love my Dyson but they are very expensive, I don't think the cost is worth it just for a couple of weeks a year unless you get the heating & cooling version so it's useful all year round

longtompot · 20/07/2021 13:36

My dh has been thinking of getting air con units here, but I am not so keen. We have solar panels so it would be powered using that so no real cost, but it's the fact they need to vent out of a window and you lose that window that I'm not so keen on.
I've sent him a link to the Meaco 1056 so I'll see what he thinks. I'd not heard about them before so thank you for the suggestion.

This one is amazing for the price:

They had it at a holiday house we stayed in and we bought one for our own home immediately. It’s quiet and effective, with lots of options for tilt/flow.

Nat6999 · 20/07/2021 14:22

I have a JML Chillmax air on my bedside table, you fill it with water & it has a filter you can either just run under the tap or wet & freeze. Mine uses 2 litres of water every 24 hours.

MistySkiesAfterRain · 20/07/2021 14:27

I have three.

Small portable desk fan - powers enough air for your face, and strongly, covers whole face. Can be carried around, moved when doing dishes etc.

Power floor fan - about 30-40 quid, highly recommend, I can sleep with it, doesn't cool air but makes a cooler breeze around your body so you feel you can breathe.

Meaco portable air con. Spent £350. Takes room from sauna to pleasant.

Yes these are the kind of desk fans that are good.
HildegardNightingale · 20/07/2021 14:32

I have a dyson fan. Atm it’s sitting on my bedside table. Last few days I’ve had it on overnight on setting 1 and slept uninterrupted from 11pm-7am. Would have slept longer but the dog woke us up. In fact I was snuggled up in my duvet this morning (only 1 tog).

Beetlebrooker · 20/07/2021 14:38

I'm glad you asked OP, I was considering a similar thread - I'm looking for something to cool my very small (1.4m x 2.7m) office, it gets very hot as the sun comes around and blares through the window and blind from 2pm onwards.

A full size air con unit would be too much, but the small "personal" coolers which work on vaporising water don't seem as though they'd be enough. Ditto a fan, surely that's just pushing warm air around?

I've seen the JML Chillmax, is that actually slightly better than a desk fan? I haven't found proper air con technology in anything small or portable.

PinkSpring · 20/07/2021 14:42

Don't bother with a Dyson, we have three and all of them are utterly useless when it's hot - they are no better than a cheap £30 fan as they can only blow warm air about. To get a decent amount of breeze, we have to set ours on 10 / full power and it's like sitting next to a jet engine.

I wouldn't buy another one - they look nice and that is about it!

Linguine1 · 20/07/2021 15:01

We have 6 Dysons (big house with barn/home office), the towers, the ones with water tanks, do hot and cold air, humidify blah blah. Absolute rubbish, we have them at max and they are noisy, overly technical and most importantly they just move warm air around. Seriously I stand right in front of them on at max and it’s not coming out cold. Just moving warm air around. I hate them so much. We live in the south east have a big south facing bed room with 4 windows, lovely teenage son hauled 4 of these expensive bastards into our room yesterday and got them going and they did nothing except roar all night.

DH bought them all. He is a fan Grin of innovative products. He has promised not to buy Dyson anything ever again. We have one old Argos fan, it is about 4 ft tall, old style, £30 if that, family fighting over who gets that in their room.

AlwaysLatte · 20/07/2021 15:03

I bought a couple of these for my sons recently as they didn't like the noise of the previous ones. These are really quiet and effective - and they love the remote control!

Thanks for all your suggestions and opinions on the Dyson fans!
I’ve ordered a Meaco 1056 direct from them (thanks for the tip @Howshouldibehave)

Cheers all!

I bought a Meaco 1056 fan at 4am today, After another night off not being able to sleep and normal fans being too noisy. Thought expensive but if it's as good as they say it will be money well spent.

Linguine1 · 20/07/2021 16:15

I have just ordered one too! I looked at John Lewis reviews which were mainly excellent (out of stock) and it’s won a couple of awards. If DH can spend £1k + on Dyson I reckon I can spend £99 on Meaco. Its going on my side of the room. Arriving after heatwave (in 4 days) but I am often too hot in our south facing oven at the best of times.

Thanks everyone.

Same here, and just had an email to say it's in its way despite them saying there was a four day wait for dispatch. It'll be here in time for the storms Grin
PrancingQueen · 23/07/2021 10:21

@longtompot me too. Sounds about right! Grin
