What to do with keys on beach?

That's it really. On holiday with ds- single parent- what do I do with my car keys when we want to go in the sea? No lockers that I could see. Am I missing something really obvious?!!!

Do they have a battery or are they normal keys? Could you get one of those silicone bands like they use for locker keys at swimming baths?

IveGotASongThatllGetOnYNerves · 18/07/2021 18:10

Waterproof holder?

LubaLuca · 18/07/2021 18:12

I suppose most people leave them with their chairs, towel etc. You could ask someone nearby to keep an eye on your things - a family similarly set up for a day on the beach are unlikely to swipe your valuables.

We used to have little plastic neck purse things when we were young, like a tube that screwed up open halfway down. I imagine they'd hold a small bunch of keys, but they probably never existed beyond the 80s.

SandandFog · 18/07/2021 18:12

I once saw a tip online that said wrap your valuables in a nappy so it looks like a used nappy and no one will steal! Never tried it though!

As long as there's nothing identifiable on my keys then I tend to just leave them with my stuff and don't go too far. I usually leave all other valuables in my glove compartment of my car.

daisycottage · 18/07/2021 18:13

I sometimes store mine down my bra.

Nameswaptime · 18/07/2021 18:14

Pop them on a lanyard around your neck? Only take the keys you need for that day.

Donelurking · 18/07/2021 18:14

Leave stuff on the beach hidden and go for a swim.

mildlymiffed · 18/07/2021 18:15

It's an electronic key- so really can't risk getting it wet! Otherwise it'll be a long journey back home at end of hols via a taxi! I did ask another family today- but then felt bad for asking them, as what if they go home? Or all want to go in the sea themselves? Kind of took the shine off the afternoon as I kept going back to check on our stuff, and it was a trek as the tide was massively out!

Tupperware box, bury under the corner of the blanket under the picnic stuff.

MyCatDribbles · 18/07/2021 18:17

Bury them in a box, put some rocks / seaweed over them to mark the point

countdowntonap · 18/07/2021 18:17

If I’m in a cove, I wade out so far and then place them on the rocks. Or, take a sealable food bag to put them in, and bury them just below the sand under your beach towel.

I was just saying yesterday that lockers at the beach would be a genius buisiness idea... Maybe I'll do it and become a millionaire!

Currently we just leave stuff on the beach and hope for the best...

EstellaHanclay · 18/07/2021 18:17

You can buy waterproof neck lanyards online (amazon etc) that will just about hold a phone, a key and some cash. They’re about £10

mildlymiffed · 18/07/2021 18:19

@ILoveAnOwl I'm in!

You can get a waterproof pouch for swimming - these kind of things. I don’t know how much I’d trust them but they get good reviews.

We have a pop up tent thing and I put our keys in a ziplock bag and dig a small hole under one corner of the tent and hide them in there. But we normally have so much crap with us noone would want to hoke through so much stuff.

AuntieStella · 18/07/2021 18:20

I have something similar to this

Mine was sold for scuba divers and it says it's leakproof to 30m

BikeRunSki · 18/07/2021 18:22

Something like this
If there are any sailing shops around, they will probably sell them.

aquapac keymaster - you can get them on Amazon. I go sea swimming and use one, It's never leaked but I usually take my non clicky spare key to use.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 18/07/2021 18:23

Please don't bury them! Even with a marker! Sunbathing many years ago my mate had taken off her swanky watch. I barely covered it with sand , placed her towel on top.. We never found it!!
Blush
Maybe in a nappy sack and tied inside a shoe?

I was on a beach in Mallorca 3 or 4 years ago which had lockers attached to sun umbrellas which were attached to sun loungers. I don't recall whether they locked with a key on a silicone band, or with a code. I think it might have been a mix of both - some lockers had code, some keys. I thought at the time it was a genius idea.

Surfers use these tow bar safe boxes so I’m told.

I have a waterproof pouch which is on a lanyard and I stick it down my wetsuit.

Bargebill19 · 18/07/2021 18:30

Keys in an condom. Tie tightly and put inside your bra top/zipped pocket.
Keeps sand and water out.

Ilikeknitting · 18/07/2021 18:49

I always pop my keys into my show if I’m going in the sea. Unless I have a bag with me, then they stay in the bag.
