People are still walking their dogs here

It’s 29 degrees by the temperature app and the car says it’s 33.
I spoke to a man, whose staffy was being walked and had ran to a tiny bit of shade and lay down panting it’s head off, and told him he needed to get it cooled down and he told me it was ‘fine’ and to not be a ‘fucking snowflake’ Shock.
I darent say anything else after that as he seemed menacing and I didn’t have any water on me to give the dog so couldn't be any help, and now I can’t stop thinking about that dog and the other dogs being walked in this heat.
It’s all over my friends Facebooks and local pages to not walk dogs in this heat and yet people still are Sad. What on earth can we do to get the message out?

that was you told op, you just can't tell people randomly

Sexnotgender · 17/07/2021 15:40

I’ve not walked my 2 in a couple of days. They’re a large breed and spend their days conked out on the floor panting!

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 15:40

wait til you are older, and perhaps slightly deaf, then you can vindicate dog owners!

@AbsolutelyPatsy but why can’t you offer helpful advice if a dogs looking about to collapse?! I was perfectly polite and his dog was suffering. He was rude and ignorant. So sad people can’t make a comment anymore without abuse.

Aye, of course it was a staffy owner who was aggressive!

I always do feel awful seeing dog paws on hot pavements though Sad

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 15:41

someone put on a facebook group a video of a couple of dogs in a car, in fact on more than one occasion, pure vigilantism

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 15:42

perhaps the staffy owner went home and felt guilty, so as you were brave enought, you might have done some good

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 15:43

i had to carry my dog in the supermarket since i dare not leave her in the car or leave her outside for fear of face book retribution

Lazierdays · 17/07/2021 15:43

@AbsolutelyPatsy it’s far too hot for dogs to be in cars! I wouldn’t put it on Facebook but they are at high risk of dying!!

@SmidgenofaPigeon are you suggesting I’m making it up? I bloody love staffs and had one as child.

It's so dangerous.

In this heat, he either skips a walk or if it's cooled down by 8/9pm I take him for a run in the field so the pavement isn't hot on his feet. Or if I wake up early enough on the weekend, before 7am.

A dog never died from not being walked.

warmfluffytowels · 17/07/2021 15:45

You can't stop them.

A Frenchie died here a couple of days ago after its' owner walked it in the middle of the day. There was also some kind of bully breed that died too not so long ago.

I'm a dog walker and my hot weather policy states I won't walk above 23 degrees and even that can be pushing it depending on the breed of dog involved. Brachy breeds, old dogs and puppies - the cut-off (for me) is even lower.

Unfortunately, it's not illegal to be a shit pet owner.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 15:46

i didnt have my dog in a car today op, it was on another occasion

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/07/2021 15:47

My ridiculously fluffy rough collie is currently having a whale of a time chasing DH around the orchard on the mower. For all you know the dog has just had a big drink and is completely fine. He might have been going 100m down the road to the paper shop. I don’t think this is the sort of thing you should interfere in.

CherryPlumCrow · 17/07/2021 15:47

People are stupid.
I think there needs to be a public campaign or something to educate people.

Lazierdays · 17/07/2021 15:47

I’ve heard of a couple who have died recently too Sad. I’m such a dog lover - mine have been snoozing all day on the cold floor after our early morning leg stretch.
It’s just made me feel so sad as these animals have not voice! Therefore it’s really upsetting that some people think it’s wrong to have a polite word with someone Confused.

Have just come back through our local park and it’s 29 degrees here and people are still out with their dogs.

Madness.

Our girl is flaked out in front of the fan. She can’t even be asked to go into the garden.

People can be such twats OP.

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/07/2021 15:48

Just read that back. The dog isn’t driving the mower and chasing DH

warmfluffytowels · 17/07/2021 15:49

For all you know the dog has just had a big drink and is completely fine.

But that won't stop heatstroke. Dogs can go from being absolutely fine to collapsed in a very short space of time. Water won't stop them overheating!

HasaDigaEebowai · 17/07/2021 15:50

I’m not saying dogs should be on long walks in this weather but the op really doesn’t know the circumstances

warmfluffytowels · 17/07/2021 15:50

Anyway, there was a thread about this recently on The Doghouse and everyone who said it was potentially dangerous was basically told to shut up and mind their own business Hmm

AbsolutelyPatsy · 17/07/2021 15:52

at a seaside town near me there are always dogs being walked, so many, whatever the weather

Soubriquet · 17/07/2021 15:52

Because, people are idiots

My dogs would love to go for a walk, but it’s too hot so I’m not gonna it.

Yes they are annoying me because they want to go out, but I would rather be annoyed by a hyper dog, than devastated by a dead dog

joystir59 · 17/07/2021 15:52

Me and dear dog were in the sea at 7.30 this morning. Walking home at 9.30.it was already too hot really. He has been lolloping about the hard floors in the house all day.

Lazierdays · 17/07/2021 15:53

@HasaDigaEebowai it was in a dog walking area nowhere near a shops and the circular route is about an hour walk. So I do no the context! He had no bag or water bottle and as PP said that wouldn’t stop them getting heat stroke. I think I’m not stupid and can tell the context of the situation and the signs a dog is struggling.
I’m amazed your dog is wanting to run round in this heat, mine and my friends are all flat out on the cold floor.
Anyway, I would rather speak up, politely, and be criticised than walk by and say nothing and a dog die.

Inexperienced dogs will of course want to go out, but they will want to come straight back home once they get outside and realise how hot it is.
