People are still walking their dogs here

It’s 29 degrees by the temperature app and the car says it’s 33.
I spoke to a man, whose staffy was being walked and had ran to a tiny bit of shade and lay down panting it’s head off, and told him he needed to get it cooled down and he told me it was ‘fine’ and to not be a ‘fucking snowflake’ Shock.
I darent say anything else after that as he seemed menacing and I didn’t have any water on me to give the dog so couldn't be any help, and now I can’t stop thinking about that dog and the other dogs being walked in this heat.
It’s all over my friends Facebooks and local pages to not walk dogs in this heat and yet people still are Sad. What on earth can we do to get the message out?

@LimitIsUp

Presumably those who live in hot climates might select breeds that better tolerate the heat too
I think some people like a argument, any idiot knows you don’t walk a dog in the heat . Hot climates they will walk in the evening or morning when cooler .
Woolywolf · 17/07/2021 18:32

I think it’s good people are careful and dogs do suffer in the heat. But I’m confused about all the mentions of burning pavements. It was 29 degrees in the south east this afternoon and I felt the pavement and walked on it barefoot for at least a minute and it was a bit warm but not even close to burning. I think this is more of an issue in America and places that get really hot temperatures and people share information about it even though it’s not that relevant to the UK. I took my dog for a short, slow on lead potter around the woods at about 10 am when it was 23-24 degrees and considering his breed and age I think it was fine. I wouldn’t let him run or go in the sun or be out for more than 20 mins ish. My dog doesn’t poo in the garden and I think would poo in the house or be very uncomfortable if he didn’t get to poo between 6 am and the next day
@warmfluffytowels7
why did he think he looked happy?
He just said the dog looked happy - he didn't say why exactly. I suppose because it was panting and looked "smiley".

But in reality, the dog was panting excessively, had a bright red tongue and gums, and also had a large amount of drool coming from its' mouth - all early signs of heatstroke.

Our dog has been with us all day, visiting people.

A couple of hours in an air conditioned car, lunch in my mum's garden for the humans while the dogs were in the kitchen with a fan and some cold water and cooked chicken.

Half hour in air con car, then a couple of hours at my mother in laws, snoozing on the sofa.

We are now back in the car with Aircon blasting.

She will be walked about 9:30.

Tomorrow we will be up early to walk and she can potter in and out as she pleases, she will mostly snooze with her arse to the fan so she gets a nice cool breeze up it (this is apparently important).

I was desperate to go to the beach today for fish and chips but there's no way we would take our fluff ball anywhere in this heat. She was even left at home while I walked to the shops for ice cream for us all.

I live in a really hot climate (it's been 40 this week) and huskies are really popular here. However, we're by the sea and the temperature really drops at about 7pm. It's still about 23 (and all night) but we have a breeze. They are walked in the evening. Next door have a very cross Alsation, but that might just be his personality, he's cross in the winter too.

Do dogs acclimatise like humans? We walk a friend's Jack Russells sometimes, and they seem fine but it's the 3rd hot place they've lived. They get lots of water and a hose down or swim.

Brazilianut · 17/07/2021 18:55

@FlaminEckVera

Hysterical judgemental woman 😂

My pup got walked at 8am and had a dog ice cream under a bench before going home, very happy. We’ve been training at home which he’s loved and it’s kept him mentally stimulated.

You are a very ignorant woman to think that anyone less hysterical than you shouldn’t own a dog. As i’ve said walk in the morning and at night and use the graph a pp posted for guidance.

What is wrong with that exactly?

Brazilianut · 17/07/2021 18:58

I mean, if as I’ve said, people are getting hysterical over me saying walk in the morning and at night when cool NOT at other times when it’s super hot- that’s when you know they’re batshit crazy.

Direstraitsmates · 17/07/2021 19:31

I walked my dog at the beach today. He walked through the water. I brought water and food. He drank and ate and had a great time. Nobody said anything rude.

People in cities may not be dragging their dogs around in the heat. They may not have gardens and need to take their dogs out for a walk to go to the toilet. When you see someone out you don't know if they are or for 5 minutes or 2 hours so it's best to not get on your high horse.

GADDay · 18/07/2021 22:30

Hot climate pooch selection doesn't seem to be a thing.

The most popular breeds are the cute fluffy ones - the Oodle range. Malamutes, huskies, GSDs are common place. Wouldn't be my first choice but the dogs survive (we all have air conditioned homes though).

I have a whippet. He is very much a warm weather hound.

Madein1995 · 18/07/2021 23:15

So cruel! Twats like that shouldnt be allowed dogs. Makes me soo angry. I dont live wirh parenta anymore but our scottie is never subjected to that bloody torture! If they want to go to the beach on a hot day then the dog stays at home (its a old house and is plenty cool inside!) With the front door left open (welsh village, feel confident) so she can go back and fo. 3 big bowls of water left down for her (eaxh bowl about 2x the size of a cereal bowl) . I rang dad earlier and lils is coping fine- she goes out and shade bathes and then comes in snd chills out. She drinks water and yeah she sleeps a lot and isnt energetic (nor am i in this heat) but shes happy. Surely any responsible dog owner would do the same. Personally for twattish dog owners id like to see them forxed to walk while wearing fur coats and get headstroke and see how they like it. Bastards. And its not like anyone can be that ignorant, even if its not for all the fb posts, ita just common sense isnt it. If youre that dim you shouldnt be allowed to have a pet as you are clearly incompetent. As for the whole no garden thing - well dont have a dog then because tjat is cruel in itself! For gods sake, just leave the dog at home.

halz personally i think rhe idiotic dog walker should have had his dog removed from his care, and should think himself luxky he was only subjected to being rude. Better than the abuse (yes, abuse) that poor animal was beinh subjected to.
Why do people have dogs or any pets for that matter if thwy are pig ignorant and self centred? Absolutely disgusting.

neroforte · 18/07/2021 23:18

i don’t have a garden, i have no choice.

Madein1995 · 18/07/2021 23:19

absolutelypastsy possibly leave the dog at home nexf time then. Its not beinh a vigilante. Its trying to be a responsoble human and stop a dog dying. No need to tske the pet in the shop. If its too hot to leave it in the car then leave it home. And if youre popping in a shop while ouy - well take the dog home and then go to the shop..a bit of inconvenience wont kill us. A bit of our convenience may kill the dog

Madein1995 · 18/07/2021 23:20

hahaha i live in a flat, he’s a greyhound rescue they clearly wouldn’t have given him to us if it wasn’t ok
GingerAndTheBiscuits · 19/07/2021 01:34

Our dog pants like an idiot whether it’s 15 degrees or 25 degrees outside so I feel judged whenever we walk her. We’ve not walked her the past couple of days as anything above 21 degrees is clearly uncomfortably warm for her and she goes to bed early and sleeps in late (one of the many reasons why we love her) so it has been too warm when she’s been awake. She’s a Staffy cross rescue but very snuffly despite not being flat-faced. Ginger though so maybe that explains why she struggles! Did see a lot of dogs out at midday today and couldn’t help thinking it must be a bit much for them.
