Twelve months before the Olympics start you receive a letter to tell you which event you'll be taking part in. You are given paid leave and childcare, and all equipment is provided. Like jury service, this is not optional.

Which event would you most want to be picked for, and which would be your worst nightmare?

Golf! I'd happily do golf.

AuntieStella · 16/07/2021 20:46

Marathon - I wouldn't trouble the truly elite runners, but with a year of top flight training I reckon I could crack a GFA

Or the 10,000m

Imaystillbedrunk · 16/07/2021 20:47

My good event would be rowing I think. I’m tall and have broad shoulders and strong legs. Or netball. I like netball and I’m an annoying Goal Keeper.

Anything swimming related for my worst event. I just can’t work out the breathing part of swimming

Are we expected to actually try to win? Because I have zero competitive spirit and am fairly shit at all organised sport, so you can sign me up all you want but I'm just going to stand around and wait to lose.

I once held back in a sprint on school sports day so me and my friend could go over the line joint last 😂

IFinallyJoinedNowWhat · 16/07/2021 20:48

Ooh great thread! Would love to be entered for the tennis, not due to any skill but at least I could say I’d faced some famous players. My average serve speed would likely be around 14mph with the wind behind me.

Least favoured would be gymnastics. The leotard thingy wouldn’t do me any favours and I fear it would go downhill from there...

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/07/2021 20:49

I love triathlon so would like to Take part in that.

I am scared of horses so defo do
Not want to do anything equestrian.

AuntieStella · 16/07/2021 20:49

Nightmare would be anything requiring good balance (even cycling). Or diving (terrified at the mere thought)

Wild card would be sailing. No idea if I would be any good at it, but it would be fantastic to learn really well

LubaLuca · 16/07/2021 20:49

Are we expected to actually try to win?

Yes! Those who don't show enough commitment will have to help pack the equipment away at the end and could miss the bus home.

I'd love to do the long jump. It was my favourite event at school, and I still have actual dreams about it sometimes.

I was scared of the high jump, though, so not doing that.

Animum2 · 16/07/2021 20:52

Well I did win Javelin on sports day at school so I'd go for that

SpornStar · 16/07/2021 20:52

It would have to be the Olympic Weightlifting for me. I do a bit of powerlifting already but that’s not an Olympic sport and ‘clean and jerk’ and ‘snatch’ make me snigger like a 12 year old. I can also only do a sport where eating a lot of calories is actively encouraged.

lljkk · 16/07/2021 20:53

Dream: kayaking, rowing, maybe MTB
Nightmare: anything involving heights

Cattenberg · 16/07/2021 20:53

Can I be the cox in a rowing event? I’m very short (but could do with losing some weight first). I’m confident that I could shout and stop the boat from crashing into anything.

devildeepbluesea · 16/07/2021 20:54

Boxing please. I throw an absolutely brilliant left uppercut. I'm pretty good at the other hits too.

My nightmare would be tennis. Can't hit a ball to save my life.

MrsCrosbyNRTB · 16/07/2021 20:55

Dressage please!

Camomila · 16/07/2021 20:56

I'd love to do gymnastics (did it all through my teens)

Would hate to swim - I'm not very good, can just about do a length in one go and that's hald doggy paddle, half proper strokes.

andbreeeathe · 16/07/2021 20:56

Oh God- imagine having to do the 50km race walk 😱
Definitely wouldn't want that, or marathon, boxing, diving, weightlifting or equestrian which I'd all be scared of.
Would love the opportunity to try anything else really!

PrincessNymeria · 16/07/2021 20:57

Archery or shooting, because I think I would find both fun, and not embarras myself too much (with some training).

I'm short, dumpy and a smoker. Things like running are out for me. I loathed the beep test, in secondary school.

PrincessNymeria · 16/07/2021 20:57

*embarrass

Cheermonger · 16/07/2021 20:59

100m cos my humiliation would be quick.

100m cos I’d be the slowest on record.

Hassled · 16/07/2021 20:59

I swam competitively as a child - I was that kid training 3 times a week. I still have the good technique - muscle memory, I guess.

But that was 100 years ago or so. Maybe bob sleigh? That looks fun.

CliffsofMohair · 16/07/2021 21:00

@SimonJT

Rugby, I have played for England, but only gay England, so the standards aren’t as high 😂

Apart from that maybe some sort of weight lifting.

That just made me howl 😂
Newchallenge · 16/07/2021 21:00

Swimming for me. Or ice-dancing. I'd like to say skiing but I would be so fearful of injuring myself! Least favourite... something horsey?

Boohooyouho · 16/07/2021 21:01

I’ll take dressage thanks. Nightmare would be and running or jumping events.

Killahangilion · 16/07/2021 21:01

Rowing, but I’d be competing for Ireland, 🇮🇪 sorry guys!

Our little town is sending 7 competitors to Tokyo to compete in the rowing events.

Definitely no running races whatsoever, I hate running. It’s painful.
