Twelve months before the Olympics start you receive a letter to tell you which event you'll be taking part in. You are given paid leave and childcare, and all equipment is provided. Like jury service, this is not optional.

Which event would you most want to be picked for, and which would be your worst nightmare?

Maybe hockey? I would be terrible but at least it’s a team effort, my nightmare would be anything involving water.

LubaLuca · 16/07/2021 20:14

I think I could manage diving. I wouldn't be great, but I think I probably wouldn't be the worst in the competition (assuming every country selects their competitors in the same way).

Shooting or equestrianism please. In other words: someone else does the energetic bit!*

*I know both have to be fit and controlled. But it looks the least physical on paper.

I think something like diving, surfing, trampolining, bmx freestyle would be the most fun.

I'd hate rowing or something longwinded like the triathlon

Midnightballerina · 16/07/2021 20:16

Can I be in the winter Olympics?. I want to do the skiing with guns. Not sure what it's called.

Hellcatspangle · 16/07/2021 20:17

Shooting. I won a competition in lanzarote once.

MariposaLilly · 16/07/2021 20:18

Show Jumping - over cavaletti jumps. I'm old af.

LubaLuca · 16/07/2021 20:19

@Hellcatspangle

Shooting. I won a competition in lanzarote once.
We have an international athlete in our midst 😯 Grin

Am terribly big.

So gymnastics would be a no. I’d bounce up onto the beam and my leotard would get sooked into every fold of fat. I’d look like I was wearing a bit of floss.

I have the upper body strength of a kitten, so despite my heft, I’d be no use at throwing events.

I’d have to have a go at diving. The water would displace so violently that I’d win on sympathy.

SimonJT · 16/07/2021 20:19

Rugby, I have played for England, but only gay England, so the standards aren’t as high 😂

Apart from that maybe some sort of weight lifting.

Panicmode1 · 16/07/2021 20:19

Anything equestrian related....I always wanted to be International Velvet Grin

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 16/07/2021 20:20

If Winter Olympics, I’d be on the teatray sliding. I’m padded.

dworky · 16/07/2021 20:20

Heptathlon for the variety of events.

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 16/07/2021 20:20

High jump. I always got silver in school.
Worst running. I always fell. Maybe that's why my tutor always entered me into the running 🤪

HumbugWhale · 16/07/2021 20:20

I am competent at and have previously competed in equestrian events (although nowhere near Olympic standard, more like village shows and things) so would choose one of those. I also tried fencing once and enjoyed it so maybe I could do that.

As for what to avoid, any sort of running would be bad including sports that require running like hockey or football. Or something I don't have a clue about like sailing.

SimonJT · 16/07/2021 20:20

Oh worst nightmare would be the horse sports, I’m a bit scared of horses.

Gladioli23 · 16/07/2021 20:21

Swimming for me I think: but the longest available event as I don't think I own a fast twitch muscle in my body.

Worst nightmare would be a marathon: I don't like and have never liked running - at least 5 or 10k would be over fast enough to not be too too miserable.

Do we get paid leave to train for the twelve months before as well? I reckon that would increase the number of events at which I wouldn't catastrophically humiliate myself...

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 16/07/2021 20:22

Changed my mind.

My worst nightmare would be running.

I’d still be valiantly doing the 800m two days later.

SunSeaSurfGin · 16/07/2021 20:22

Swimming for me please

I'm excited for the climbing new this year
Also maybe netball and I want to try tennis again as Wimbledon this year had me hooked.
Also cycling

I will not do the marathon and I'm not really a gymnast

purpledagger · 16/07/2021 20:22

I'd do the gymnastics where they twirl the ribbon.
Or beach volleyball
Or synchronised swimming

I'd hate to do
Long distance running
Anything involving horses
High diving
Weightlifting

SkepticalCat · 16/07/2021 20:22

I've always fancied having a go at fencing, so I think I'd choose that.

Downhill mountain biking would terrify me, so not that.

AdaColeman · 16/07/2021 20:23

Anything swimming, rowing or shooting would be fine.

But in running, especially hurdles, or long jump or high jump I’d be at the very back of the field.

Indigopearl · 16/07/2021 20:23

Maybe sailing or archery. I also quite fancy climbing which will be in the olympics for the first time this year.

Fromage · 16/07/2021 20:23

Are we allowed to send a note excusing us, from our mums?

Scarby9 · 16/07/2021 20:23

Gymnastics please!
I spent my youth between the ages of 11 and 14 dreaming of competing, but never managing a back bend or the spilts. That would make my year. Nay, my decade.
