Twelve months before the Olympics start you receive a letter to tell you which event you'll be taking part in. You are given paid leave and childcare, and all equipment is provided. Like jury service, this is not optional.

Which event would you most want to be picked for, and which would be your worst nightmare?

Female boxing because I’m Irish and that is where our greatest medal chances would be

CliffsofMohair · 16/07/2021 21:03

@Killahangilion famous West Cork town famous for successful brothers?

I stand corrected though, maybe I should switch to rowing from boxing 🏅

Floralnomad · 16/07/2021 21:05

I could do a passable dressage test .

I'd have a bash at any of the equestrian, swimming or tennis competitions. Anything involving running and I'd come last!!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/07/2021 21:08

Plus : Bob sleigh - but not the one pushing at the back.
Minus : Synchronised Swimming - I could never use one of those nose-clips.

whatswithtodaytoday · 16/07/2021 21:09

@LubaLuca

Are we expected to actually try to win?

Yes! Those who don't show enough commitment will have to help pack the equipment away at the end and could miss the bus home.

Totally down with that, sounds infinitely better than competing 😁
TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2021 21:10

Hurdles for me please! Was my specialist skill at school, long legs and light on my feet.
I’m now still long legged but slightly heavier on my feet, the year of training would come in handy providing I can have a personal chef!

PrincessNymeria · 16/07/2021 21:10

I would love to do swimming, or conoeing, and I've always wanted to learn how to sail. I'm a fair swimmer, and love water, but my size and lack of arm/general strength, would screw me in the end.
I'd rather do 40 slow and steady laps of a pool, than a 4 lap race.

I can play tennis and cycle too, but am not very good at either.

ChasedByFox · 16/07/2021 21:10

Shooting- I was marksman standard 30 years ago
Fencing- because I'm good at nipping backwards and forwards
5k ...but I'd be v slow, definitely finish though.

I think Gay England should enter as a separate nation @SimonJT well, Gay GB Grin

rantymcrantface66 · 16/07/2021 21:11

Anything equestrian, although only if I get the Olympic horses because DD's arsehole ponies won't get me far!

Dontwatchfootball · 16/07/2021 21:17

I am really good at the ta-da bit at the end of the gymnastics event where they throw their arms up and stick their bums out. Crap at all the rest of it though!

Staffy1 · 16/07/2021 21:17

Best: swimming
Worst: too many to choose from.

Gazelda · 16/07/2021 21:17

Dressage or tennis. I like the outfits.

I couldn't be faffed with swimming, diving etc - I'd hate having to wash my hair every day.

I'd maybe do the weightlifting if it meant having to eat like a Trojan beforehand to bulk up.

Or I'll give out the medals if you want me to?

MsCupcake · 16/07/2021 21:20

Trap Shooting for me please, definitely don’t want running as much as I’d love to, they’d need to reinforce the track 🤦‍♀️

BeyondMyWits · 16/07/2021 21:20

The usual UK events for me... the sitting down ones... horses, boats bikes....

No jumping, swimming or running.

StrongLegs · 16/07/2021 21:20

I think I could enjoy shooting and archery. Also maybe throwing the javelin just a very very short distance.

I could walk the 100m quite slowly.

The rest is definitely out.

CaptainCallisto · 16/07/2021 21:24

I think I'd do well in the netball. I also competed for my county in triple jump 25 years ago so might be ok with some major fitness training.

I'm a major wussbag though, so any type of boxing/martial arts would be a huge no!

igelkott2021 · 16/07/2021 21:25

I am a big parkrun fan so 5000m for me. Though track running is boring and in the heat of Tokyo - I don't think I'd acquit myself very well!

drspouse · 16/07/2021 21:28

Cross country skiing as long as I'm allowed to stop every km for chocolate.
Least favourite would be anything where my shoulders have to move beyond 90°, so maybe gymnastics etc.

CaptainCallisto · 16/07/2021 21:28

DH reckons he'd be good at badminton or shot-put, and would suck at any kind of gymnastics or trampolining. Personally, I think it would be hilarious to watch him try rhythmic gymnastics Grin

BlackKnightinYellowWellies · 16/07/2021 21:29

High jump for me please. Never mind that I am short and my tum will knock the pole off. Grin

drspouse · 16/07/2021 21:30

I bet Gay England has a higher population than some small island states. Some large ones too.

purplesequins · 16/07/2021 21:30

I would like a go at fencing
or modern pentathlon

TheChosenTwo · 16/07/2021 21:35

Swimming would be my nightmare event, wet clothes, hanging around in swimwear, don’t even get me started on getting a swim cap over my hair! Plus I actually hate having my face in water. I really hope I don’t get selected for anything in water. Or anything horsey.

BearSoFair · 16/07/2021 21:36

I'd hope for swimming, I know I can do it Grin Granted not at anywhere near Olympic level but I wouldn't embarrass myself too badly! Or archery - never tried it but I'd love to have a go.

Would absolutely not want to do anything involving running!
