Twelve months before the Olympics start you receive a letter to tell you which event you'll be taking part in. You are given paid leave and childcare, and all equipment is provided. Like jury service, this is not optional.

Which event would you most want to be picked for, and which would be your worst nightmare?

Oooo equestrian I'd love to get back into riding

BashStreet1 · 16/07/2021 20:24

Table tennis for me please.

I'm quite good at it after a few wines on holiday- well I can beat the kids in a game anyway!

LubaLuca · 16/07/2021 20:25

@Fromage

Are we allowed to send a note excusing us, from our mums?
No, verrucas and periods are not an excuse.

That sport that you just have to sledge on a tray and go down the course at break neck speed (skeleton???) I’m sure tones of hard work actually goes into it but I’ll give anything a go if I can lie down

icebearforpresident · 16/07/2021 20:26

I always wanted to learn to skateboard when I was younger, sign me up for that.

treesgoping · 16/07/2021 20:27

I think the triple jump would be fun as well as the pole vault. However, I wouldn't want my attempts at these to be witnessed by anybody, let alone a stadium of thousands of people and millions watching live on tv.
Hurdles would be the worst because I would no doubt face plank the first one then either burst into tears or wet myself from laughing.

So I would have to take some drugs the night before and get myself disqualified. Sorry team GB. 🇬🇧

currentlynotavailable · 16/07/2021 20:29

I used to be a national trampolinist so that would be what I most want to be picked for.

Least would probably be boxing, I'd get one punch and cry. Blush

YesThisIsMe · 16/07/2021 20:30

Shooting would be the most realistic for me to have a go at at my age and general level of incomplete, but the event I think would be coolest to get fit for is either biathlon (the skiing and shooting one) or modern pentathlon (fencing, swimming, riding and then finishing off with a combination of cross country running and laser pistol).

nancy75 · 16/07/2021 20:31

I’m ok a swimming, but I’d still come last by a very long way.
I’m awfully good at eating cake, if that could be introduced I’d be in with a chance

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2021 20:32

I think I could manage fencing, boxing and that skiing/rifle malarkey.

Basically I'm 'arder than most of you.

High jump I'd actually die. So not that.

YesThisIsMe · 16/07/2021 20:32

But I agree that 4 man bobsled would probably be the easiest to get away with as long as half the team were competent at steering because gravity is doing most of the work.

Nillynally · 16/07/2021 20:32

Gymnastics. But I'll need a personal trainer. If this can't be arranged then dressage.

ShaunaTheSheep · 16/07/2021 20:33

Would love to do figure skating.
Would prefer not to do the 10m diving!

RubyGoat · 16/07/2021 20:33

I’m actually a pretty decent shot at archery.

Nightmare - anything that involves running. I’m short, asthmatic, & unfit. At school cross country, I usually had to get carried off by the teachers with leg cramps that wouldn’t ease off.

amillionrosepetals · 16/07/2021 20:34

The long jump. I could saunter up to the jumpy bit as fast as my dodgy knees will allow and then do a pathetic little jump. Then I'm done for the day as sadly I wouldn't have qualified for the next round. Anything to do with swimming would be my nightmare, unless the pool is heated and I have it all to myself. For some strange reason I have no desire to get into a giant bath of cold water with a bunch of nearly naked strangers.

LBOCS2 · 16/07/2021 20:35

Skiing, shooting, riding, swimming, fencing. So... biathlon, any of the equestrian or shooting events would work for me.

Please don't make me run though. Rules modern pentathlon out as well.

Traled · 16/07/2021 20:36

Boxing or karate if they keep it in past this one. Did them both for years when I was younger. My hell would be basketball (short arse) or rhythmic gymnastics. I have zero elegance.

Ohshittt · 16/07/2021 20:36

Oh gosh, I'm not sure. If it was horse racing rather than the Olympics I would definitely be the non runner 😂

VetOnCall · 16/07/2021 20:37

I could have a crack at kayaking, rowing, the 5000m run, sport climbing, shooting, archery and equestrianism (probably dressage as less chance of hitting the deck, I no longer bounce like I used to). I'd be dead last by enormous margins in all of them obviously but I'd at least have some capability and idea what I was doing.

Worst nightmare would be diving, I can swim but absolutely can't dive, I'd be absolutely bricking it. Hockey would be the another one, I detested it at school.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/07/2021 20:38

I imagine my rhythmic gymnastics would resemble Joey's dancing in Friends.

JAZZ HANDS!!!

DukeofEarlGrey · 16/07/2021 20:38

I reckon I'd have a fighting chance (sorry) at the boxing.

Not pentathlon - you have to be good at FIVE things.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 16/07/2021 20:40

I wouldn't mind any of the water events, but gymnastics would ge bad, or maybe the hight jump would be awful!!

randomsabreuse · 16/07/2021 20:41

Worst, track cycling. Especially Madison. Scared of bikes as it is. Or possibly skateboarding. Winter Olympics Ski Jumping or big air would be horrific!

Would love to do figure skating (winter Olympics) and to be honest would struggle to choose from the summer sports. Fencing would be ideal as I have a head start (ex top 5 in the UK) or if it has to be something "new" I'd choose modern pentathlon or possibly heptathlon.

Greenandcabbagelooking · 16/07/2021 20:44

I’d love gymnastics or equestrian.

I’d hate the marathon or heptathlon. I can’t run or throw.

AlfonsoTheMango · 16/07/2021 20:44

@Marmite27

I’d quite like a go at eventing or curling.
That reminds me of one of my favourite jokes:

How do you stop bacon from curling in the pan?

Take away its little broom!
