Twelve months before the Olympics start you receive a letter to tell you which event you'll be taking part in. You are given paid leave and childcare, and all equipment is provided. Like jury service, this is not optional.

Which event would you most want to be picked for, and which would be your worst nightmare?

I’d be awful at all of them.

I guess the events with a high chance of injury would be the worst - pole vaulting, ski jumping, show jumping, and so on.

So I’m thinking a running event would be best. I’d come out of that in one piece. Unless my performance was so poor I died of embarrassment.

crapatthis1 · 16/07/2021 23:55

Women's football!

anappleadaykeeps · 17/07/2021 00:01

I always thought I'd be good at the Pole Vault, if only I'd been given the chance ....

I'd be terrified of a back injury. (I know the landing is soft, but still...)
Maskedrevenger · 17/07/2021 00:44

Sailing for me , I used to do a bit a looong time ago but at least I would know the basics.
Couldn’t do any event involving running, with my huge boobs they’d be all over the place. Might distract attention away from my rubbish performance though, so that would be helpful.

LubaLuca · 17/07/2021 07:30

@Awwlookatmybabyspider

I shat myself then. I thought it was true. Blush😂😂😂😂. Maybe swimming
😂

Would most want to be picked for any of the equestrian ones. I could manage those without totally embarrassing myself.

Most disastrous would be the pole vault. I simply do not understand how it works or what the mechanism is.

IFinallyJoinedNowWhat · 17/07/2021 13:12

Ooh actually can I be the one who carries the flag round the track at the beginning? Only trouble is I’m not sure if I can wave, hold the flag and not trip over my own feet all at once.

I think between us we’ve got a reasonably average team for all events though. At least we’d have a laugh! 😁

Jasmin82 · 17/07/2021 13:21

I'd be happy with dressage or archery. I gave archery a go at uni and was pretty good at it on the taster session, I just decided I could put the cost of membership to the club to better use. I can also still do them despite being in a wheelchair.
I'd hate to be entered for any swimming event as, even when my legs worked, I was just about passable to swim a width of the local pool.

SunSeaSurfGin · 17/07/2021 13:48

I'd also want to give pole vault a go but reckon I'd be awful

BecauseMyRingBurnsSheila · 17/07/2021 14:01

Archery! I swear I could have been champ standard if my parents had actually been interested in me.

I don't want to wrestle, get kicked or punched please!

StephieSlade · 17/07/2021 14:10

Either the dressage, swimming or trampolining 😊😊.
I've got Dyspraxia, so anything else would be a nightmare 😂😂😂!

PleaseStopExplaining · 17/07/2021 14:41

Assuming my disability meant it would be paralympics, boccia.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/07/2021 15:03

I would do swimming and maybe have a go at shot putt. All this lockdown weight I've put on might work for me! I would not want to do running of any sort.

@LubaLuca

I'd want to do equestrian, although I've only been on a horse maybe 3 times in my life. It looks fun and achievable.

My nightmare would be hurdles. The humiliation of being crap and falling over.

I would just stop and step over/move them out of the way ;)
BlackeyedSusan · 17/07/2021 15:18

Netball.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 17/07/2021 15:44

The horse events. At least I can ride a horse still I hope so it's just be polishing and learning some new stuff. Not that I'd get anywhere grin

AGirlCalledJohnny · 17/07/2021 16:03

Seeing as it's complete fantasy, I shall be channelling my inner Fenella Maxwell and fearlessly roaring around the showjumping arena on my plucky mount, winning silver and counting down the minutes until I fall into the arms of the snake hipped Dino Ferranti.

Worst nightmare, high dive. My legs start to wobble at anything over 10ft Grin

hellsbellswithcherryontop · 17/07/2021 16:26

Hurdles, I'm 5ft nothing so no chanceGrin

Willowkins · 17/07/2021 16:46

I'd like to have a go at polevaulting.
Don't make me run unless there is a distance called 4A-bus.

Fromage · 17/07/2021 22:57

I have had a long hard look in the mirror, and the obvious answer is..........sumo Grin

I have started training already. Cake Cake Cake Cake

I would not like to do an actual sport but I would be awesome at commentary on the Don't Give A Shit, I'm Fairly Pissed tv channel. The training is similar to sumo but with added Wine Wine Wine

safariboot · 17/07/2021 23:14

Rowing I have a vague chance at, I've done it before. I was crap but I can't have forgotten everything I learned!

Last time I went downhill skiing I broke my leg, so nope nope nope on that again.

StCharlotte · 17/07/2021 23:24

worst event: gardening. I once killed a cactus. there'd be no point BOOM BOOM!

I have done shooting and archery, not without some success, so one of those please.

As for worst nightmare, any sport that requires a Hollywood wax.

Holothane · 17/07/2021 23:30

Not caring and getting films ready for the fortnight, is that an event, damned if I’m spending my birthday next week watching any sport.
