I just got this email from my daughters school, apparently a lot of schools are doing it by what I've seen on Facebook today!

Is your school letting kids come to school late on Monday?

Ours is but DS doesn't like to watch the football so he will get the bus as normal.

gingercat02 · 09/07/2021 18:19

Nope our Y5 and Y8 are wild camping for 3 days so need to be in early on Monday

moynomore · 09/07/2021 18:19

Schools do something nice for kids. Let the bitching & whinging commence on mumsnet. This football tournament has really got the fun sponges going eh!.

It is so annoying.

My/dd2's school have a random inset day on Monday anyway so we're off.

We've heard nothing from dd1's secondary school so presume not.

forfucksakenett · 09/07/2021 19:26

@Whatwouldscullydo

Urgh.

They failed to say its only the mens team that hasn't made it in 55 years.

And yes mine are allowed in later.

Yes it's a real shame they didn't afford the women's teams the same!
Gingerlilly · 09/07/2021 19:31

My kids school are doing it. I can see both points of view. Personally we are not bothered about football but I support the school in whatever decision they make. It’s been a tough enough year for headteachers and they’ll never please everyone.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/07/2021 20:03

Yes but I have to work (out of the home) so DS will be going in at normal time.

MyCatEatsPrawnCrackers · 09/07/2021 20:33

My school did this when the World Cup was in Japan (I think) ,and the time difference was such that matches were shown in the morning. Children were allowed to stay at home for the England games and come in afterwards and if children came in at the normal time, they watched the match in the classroom.

fuckingsickofcovid · 09/07/2021 21:02

My children's is letting people come in late until 11.30

Laiste · 09/07/2021 21:18

Yes our school is doing it. I can't say i'm very impressed to be honest. The Headmaster's wildly into his football ...

I'll be watching the match but i'm not particularly interested in trying to get my yr 2 whipped up into enough of a frenzy about it to try and stay up till 10/10.30.

She'll go in late 'cos i expect some of her mates will be and we are lucky enough to be in a position to let her do the same.

wendz86 · 09/07/2021 21:26

Yes they are and i think it's a great idea. Unfortunately knowing my children they will no doubt not get the memo and still wake at 6 am .

snowballer · 09/07/2021 22:15

Ha - what a festival of grammatical errors that email is! My favourite is the lack of full stop at the end of it - quite the most basic of all punctuation...

Our school isn't doing this; I wish it was.

ChocolateRiver · 09/07/2021 22:22

Ours are allowed in later if they want to, but must be in by 10am at the latest. So only missing an hour really.

user1745 · 10/07/2021 00:18

I wouldn't have a problem with this. It does no harm to loosen the rules once in a while for something like this.

LobotomisedIceSkatingFan · 10/07/2021 02:15

'After a shit year where kids have already missed so much'

School, mostly. Missed so much - school.

Juanbablo · 10/07/2021 04:37

Primary is but I've heard nothing from secondary on the matter so assume they are to go in at normal time.

Frazzled2207 · 10/07/2021 09:47

Tbf secondary are more likely to be able to “cope” with a later than usual night
JustLoveYourselfALittle · 10/07/2021 09:51

We've not heard but ds (15) doesn't go to bed till 11pm anyway so makes no difference to a bedtime
However if he's too hungover then of course I'll let him go in late haha.
But in seriousness if he wants to go in slightly late then he can all he's doing the next 2 weeks is movies, parties etc at school.

drainrat · 10/07/2021 10:02

I think the lie-in is for the teachers more than the pupils, and after the year they’ve had, they bloody well deserve it.

ForgedInFire · 10/07/2021 10:05

Our school has said kids can come in at 10.30. They did the same thing on Thursday for the last match as well. And yesterday they taught them all the lyrics to Sweet Caroline Grin

SnitchyBitch · 10/07/2021 10:19

@drainrat Unfortunately for us staff aren’t included. Some of the kids will still come in as normal at 8.30 so we’ll all have to be there.

Kinsters · 10/07/2021 10:40

I think it's a nice thing to do. One of my happy school memories is the school opening early to screen an England game, we all sat in the hall and are croissants and watched it and it was lovely. Must have been the 2002 world cup. Don't remember the result or who we were playing but I remember the fun of doing something special.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 10/07/2021 10:58

@optimistic40 but teachers and children can go in as usual, I've not heard of a single school opening late just allowing children to be late. All teachers are in as usual ready to take the children in of parents who need them to go to school.

Elsielouise13 · 10/07/2021 11:02

@GolfForBrains

The apostrophe misuse Angry
This.

If the Head approved this comms I’d be asking some pertinent questions about the capability of the senior team.

Never mind the sentiment of the message - which I also think is poor.

What learning outcome is met by staying in bed….

FlaminEckVera · 10/07/2021 11:31

Our local school is doing it. I just found out. Good for them!
