I just got this email from my daughters school, apparently a lot of schools are doing it by what I've seen on Facebook today!

Is your school letting kids come to school late on Monday?

No they aren’t, but I may not send them in. There is more to childhood than Monday morning maths. I applaud the headteacher doing this! Leadership!

AnxiousWeirdo · 09/07/2021 16:33

No ours isn't but every other local school is doing something like this or a non uniform day. Ours doesn't do much though (red nose Day / children in need etc) so I'm not surprised.

monkeyallen44 · 09/07/2021 16:37

Some real miseries on this thread. It's not compulsory. If your kids don't want to watch it they can still go in at normal time. For those that are excited and eager to cheer on their team it makes sense. After a shit year where kids have already missed so much, I hardly think one Monday morning is going to have a devastating effect. They will no doubt have some great memories of the match, I still remember watching England at school in the World Cup (1990 something Hmm)

Ours is and I think it's nice. Why are people so miserable? Not a football fan btw.

AlternativePerspective · 09/07/2021 16:39

The papers are calling for a full bank holiday. They do that every time there’s a major tournament and if England make it to the quarter finals. In fact I’m surprised there weren’t calls for a bank holiday to celebrate beating the Germans.

And what kind of “learning opportunity” exactly? Learning that far too many people are obsessed by one game which appears to obscure all others? Opportunity to learn that it’s ok to be sexist and misogynist by only celebrating the achievements of men?

Absolutely ridiculous idea.

Mind you, if they lose then the non football fans can have the morning off to celebrate. 😀

FindingMeno · 09/07/2021 16:43

I think its a great idea - shame our school isn't doing it!
After a thoroughly miserable year +, let the children/ teenagers take a part in watching what is going to be quite the event for many.
I don't give a shite about football but the buzz around this is contagious!

AlternativePerspective · 09/07/2021 16:45

And for the people saying that posters are miserable, let’s be honest here, this is totally disingenuous.

You can’t possibly frame this as a “learning opportunity”, it isn’t. The real reason why this school has done it and others have followed suit is because the staff want to watch the game while getting pissed and probably don’t want to have to come in with a hangover the next day.

FindingMeno · 09/07/2021 16:48

I say if the staff want to watch it and get pissed, fair play to them.
They've had a shit year + also!

Tinysalmonswimminginastream · 09/07/2021 16:50

Christ you are a miserable bunch on here sometimes! My kids school announced they were doing this yesterday - it's the 2nd last Monday of what has been an absolutely shit year and you can send your kid in on time if you want to. What's the problem?

So? It doesn't matter how the school is spinning it. People are still being miserable.
PumpkinKlNG · 09/07/2021 16:55

Yes our school is, we won’t be watching it but will take advantage of getting up a bit later

Inneedofaholiday · 09/07/2021 16:56

I think it’s a nice idea. Our school have had sports day and next week they’re having fun day, so I have no problem with a later start for football. It’s lovely to see them enjoying themselves again.

Yeahhhh that’s definitely not why. I know this school personally and the headteacher and staff consistently go above and beyond for the local community. I don’t think you’d find many people around here with bad things to say about this school.
MiamiPants · 09/07/2021 16:58

Yep. 10:30 for us! Hoorah!

nothingnobleaboutstalking · 09/07/2021 16:58

No, but then my DC's school are against pupils being in school anyway, so I'll be surprised if they don't send home the yeargroup for one positive case, so it's all academic really.

nothingnobleaboutstalking · 09/07/2021 16:59

(school where the pupils go into isolation but funnily enough not a single teacher is a close contact and all teachers free to shop, exercise, socialise, holiday etc)

colouringindoors · 09/07/2021 16:59

My dcs secondary school moved to online Wednesday due to numbers of cases and self isolating kids and teachers...

Haven't heard anything but kind of hope they do. After the last 18 months what's the harm?!

I agree that attempting to frame it as a learning opportunity is ridiculous. But the teachers will have to be in anyway surely, since they won’t know how many kids will show up until Monday they can’t all stay home.
CupoTeap · 09/07/2021 17:06

Nope

CoffeeWithCheese · 09/07/2021 17:06

Yep they are. Unfortunately I've already got something booked in that day I cannot get out of easily, and so I've had absolute outrage off the kids that they will have to go in and their friends won't. The letting us know at 1pm as well was particularly appreciated.

And since the school made a huge thing of pulling everything fun from the curriculum to just drill maths and English after all the closures - the fact they spent most of today colouring in England flags and will be doing nothing on Monday is particularly galling as well.

Lemonsole · 09/07/2021 17:07

Way to (a) keep reinforcing the sexist trope that men's sport is objectively more important than any other and (b) miss out on the "learning opportunities" offered when you have to honour existing commitments even when you have chosen to stay up later than usual/go to a party.

SnitchyBitch · 09/07/2021 17:07

@GolfForBrains The apostrophe was the first thing I thought as well! From a SCHOOL! They’re meant to know this shit and if you don’t, get someone else to proof read it.

tigger1001 · 09/07/2021 17:07

I'm Scottish so got no skin in the game, but I really don't see the harm. It's been a pretty rubbish year so allowing these who want to to come in late once jn the term seems ok to me, especially so close to the end of term.

These who don't want to go in late or whose parents need to drop off at the normal time, can still do so.

My son took a half day off to watch Scotland's opening match. He watched with his pals and was such a great experience (despite the result) for them to experience that together, especially given what it's been like in the last 18 months.

RubyFakeLips · 09/07/2021 17:10

Ours are doing it but am going to keep them off all day anyway. Teachers have to be in usual time, doesn’t benefit them.

Also this was done when my eldest in his twenties was at school so not a new suggestion. That wasn’t even the final. Was the bloody. Group stages of the World Cup.

Not for the learning experience, but because it’s fun and that’s been a rare thing recently.
