So I have rescued a kitten

I think it was dumped - it was with another kitten that was dead.

It’s small but it’s eyes are open and it’s able to walk around (quite confidently!) so I think maybe 5 weeks or so?

It’s black.

I’ve fed it mushed up food with kitten milk and it has food and water and a blanket and a cuddly toy in an old dog cage.

Also made up a litter tray from an old baking tray and put litter in it.

I will of course take it to the vet tomorrow but do I need to feed it in the middle of the night?

It’s currently trying to climb up the cage and it’s been playing with a cat toy so I think it’s ok in itself.

Hard to tell from the pics but looks 6-7weeks to me. Black cats are the best.

MissCruellaDeVil · 04/07/2021 23:41

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. Oh couldn't you just squeeeeze it. Bites finger with severe cute aggression. Grin
Oh and BTW I'm not crying, honestly. I'm cutting onions.

Watch Kitten Lady on You Tube if you don't already do so. I just watch to coo at the kittens.

When are you going to call him/her.
Congratulations on your new furbaby btw.

So he/she is still here. Just fed.

Have to pick DC up from the airport at 7am. They don’t know about the wee kitten yet.

Great My rescue kitten found in similar circumstances is currently sprawled across my chest as I type this! He's now considerably larger!

If you lift the tail and take a pic of the genital area we might be able to sex it for you @Smallbutnottinykitten

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 05/07/2021 10:16

What a wonderful human you are!

Smallbutnottinykitten · 05/07/2021 11:50

It’s for the vet tomorrow for sexing/worming etc. But it’s as bold as brass. I can’t think there’s much wrong with it the way it’s been swinging from my curtains and rampaging round the living room.

It peed in the dog’s bed the dog was unimpressed 😂😂😂

Oh poor baby. I agree with around 5 weeks old from the picture, we work on around 100 g a week plus 100 g starting weight at that age, providing it's had a reasonable start in life. Usually their mums are great at feeding them, even if they don't have great nutrition themselves.

I foster rescue kittens so the scenario is all too familiar to me, unfortunately. Behind every squeeee kittens experience is usually a story of suffering Sad.

I'd suggest contacting a local rescue as they may be able to trap and spay mum if she's a feral or possibly look for more kittens, or generally advise if you need any help.

Other two suggestions would be to ask the rescue if they have a similar age kitten you could foster, so it has a playmate as they learn so much from having companionship at this age.

Also weigh him/her every couple of days if you have digital kitchen scales as it's a good indicator of good development/health.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/07/2021 12:07

On sexing, it's quite hard to tell with black kittens unless you have really good light.

Unlike a PP, I love black cats, they often seem the most friendly/affectionate. It's almost like they know they have to work harder for people to love them, as they're less popular.

Smallbutnottinykitten · 05/07/2021 12:08

The thing is, there’s loads of feral cats (farm next door and we are rural) but this one isn’t feral it’s too friendly to be feral.

Off to get the scales out …

I think it's too young to be feral. Kittens are just kittens,i think, it is their upbringing that would determine if they become feral or not.

Either way, so glad he/she has found a home with you Smile So heartbreaking for the other poor little mite Sad

Glad you guys seem to be getting on so well; hope you both managed to get some sleep!

Ninkanink · 05/07/2021 12:16

Awww what a cute little thing!

The children will be very excited...

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/07/2021 12:20

😂😂😂😂. Oh I love the way kittens do that. It's sign of confidence apparently.

I agree, my current foster kittens were feral in that they were rescued from outside with their mum who is feral - she couldn't adapt to being inside so was spayed and released within a few days, but her kittens were friendly. They need human contact before about 2-3 months old if they're going to be pets and not ferals.

But often we don't know the circumstances, but if there's lots of farms where you are OP, their mum could be a farm cat, possibly one that's come to harm Sad

Smallbutnottinykitten · 05/07/2021 12:23

Ok so. It is 816g so about 7 weeks?

Mama1980 · 05/07/2021 12:25

Aw so cute!
I got my first cat in a similar way, he was injured very thing and I found him lying underneath my garden bench one morning. Many years later he rules the roost and is currently sunning himself in the conservatory and taking up half a sofa 😂

Journeynotdestination · 05/07/2021 12:27

So gorgeous 😻. Keep posting pics!

I had a black cat called Kismet. We called him Kizzie.

BarbaraofSeville · 05/07/2021 12:28

That's a good a guess as any and likely to be right within a week or so either way. Your vet will obviously be able to give a more educated guess after looking at eyes, teeth etc.

If you're planning on keeping him/her the next step will be vaccinations and microchipping, usually from 9 weeks, so probably a little early now, but your vet might know differently then planning for neutering in a couple of months or so.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2021 12:28

He is so adorable 🥰

Smallbutnottinykitten · 05/07/2021 12:32

Yeah vaccinations/chip/sort insurance/worm/deflea/get a proper bed/litter tray and all that good stuff.
