AlCalavicci · 04/07/2021 16:38

No , I dont mean things like Live Love Life etc , each to their own but thats really not my thing .

I am in the very long proccess of redecorating , so I am stripping wall paper off .
I all of my old houses there have been little notes under the wall paper 'such and such lives here from x date '
But other than a few decoraters marks and mesurements their is nothing in this house .
So I am going to write somthing like Al moved in to this house on x and did this decorating on , , , today / tomorrows date .

What else can I write ?

What have you found wrote under wall papper ?

I wrote a whole page of stuff. The history of the house, when we bought it, the changes we made. It will only be found if the hardwood flooring is taken up, as I put it under the floorboards.

The bottom part of mine reads
“Portugal vs England in Euros quarter final this evening.
We lost on penalties but the Portuguese cafe up the road [since sadly closed] does a very good bacon roll”

@AlCalavicci
Ha! I had a forced vacation !Grin

How I wish I were jetting off to set up my moonpie stall at BP and to buy a crate of those delicious Maltesers...yummy!
I was just spending some time with family on the East Coast ĺast week and was on my way home to the West Coast...so see, nothing too exotic, but fun nonetheless, albeit without the Maltesers...Actually my mum did pick up a packet of Moonpies on the last day I was there and seeing them brought back fond memories of you and the Maltesers thread😂

Thank you so much for the links to find the murals for my DH...I will have to hide his credit cards before I show him..
He already had plastered an entire wall with a map of the world...in the morning I will post a photo.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 10/07/2021 12:28

I remember helping peel wallpaper in my room as a child and someone had written "ELVIS IS KING!!!!" in giant letters along one wall.

AlCalavicci · 10/07/2021 12:28

@Sweetpea1532

@AlCalavicci
NO WAY! That is so funny!
You 2 would be dangerous together Grin
Here's our very inaccurate, circa 1980s Cold War map...you know, back when there was a wall in the middle of Germany until President Reagan declared,, " Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!" , and Czechoslovakia was a country?
I purchased it at an estate sale about 20 years ago...these maps had been gifted to schools in the area in honour of the 1984 Olympics so the children could learn about the different countries being represented at the LA Games. Strange how much the World has changed...hence why your idea is so important! A piece of history.

I'm sure your mural will be very tasteful...ours is as tacky as can be....I've not pasted it on the wall in case we have a fire I can grab it on my way out(jk)..I first put it up with those stick pin tacks, but they kept getting brushed off and would find their way into DHs foot. I had to resort to good ole thumbtacks...I had a dilemma as to what to do about the heating duct since we don't have radiators, but central heating...I tackily cut out around it.... and best of all, we don't have drapes in that room so it can be viewed through the 8ft sliding glass door by anyone coming up the hill!
Handymen have been very puzzled by it...A real conversation piece..."Hey, What's with the giant map?"Grin

@AlCalavicci

So glad you're getting to see your DB soon! I can't imagine how horrible that must feel to be so locked down that you can't visit family for so longShock

Since the airlines here have been extremely proactive in PPE restrictions as have the airports, I've fortunately not been affected by covid19 as far as being able to see my family. The airplanes are probably the safest places in the country. Full compliance by all....if you didn't, you were arrested either before the plane took off or if you took off your mask during the flight, arrested at the arrival city...I think that close to 3500 people made that unwise choice with a very high penalty! Strict PPE was put into place when the airlines had so many employees dying of covid19 last year.

On to better times and 3 cheers for @AlCalavicci for this happy thread!FlowersWine

As children, we always got measured against the wall with our names and the date and height. My parents recently moved out of our childhood home and my children were measured (and me!) the last time they decorated a couple of years ago!

Sweetpea1532 · 10/07/2021 22:24

@AlCalavicci

It looks like your map is actually on a folding divider? Oh, Lord! I am not letting you and DH on the same continent together! He LOVES panel dividers, also!...if he discovered that he can buy one with a mural on it he would bankrupt us...we once had one of those Asian black lacquered room dividers similar to the attached photo except ours had some silk fabric panels instead of wood...of course with 3 DC, 4 dogs and 8 house moves there were holes punched through the fabric...let's just say it had seen better days...we were having a boot sale one year and he was in cleanout mode. HE sold it for about $10 US....to this day, he says that selling it is one of his biggest regrets in life!🙄Grin

Next project see if you can get little doggie footprints in paint to attach to the wall...that would make me happy to peel off wallpaper and find some little doggie footprintsGrin

Sweetpea1532 · 10/07/2021 22:30

@Imadreamer100
That's so sweet! When we moved into our home many years ago the previous owners had marked the garage wall with their DCs measurements over the years...when I later painted that wall I left that section like it was in case the children ever came back and wanted to visit their old home...when we moved 10 years ago after being there for 25 years, it was still there...I'm sure the new owners couldn't wait to cover it as they didn't seem to be the sentimental typeHmmGrin

‘When I am dead and in my grave and all my bones are rotten
See this and remember me so I am not forgotten’
Wrote this followed by my name and date of birth.
Perhaps in 200 years someone will think about me Grin

AlCalavicci · 10/07/2021 22:42

@Sweetpea1532 , wow that's huge , I like it ! Many years ago I had a huge pic of a random dog , and to hang it like you I tried pins but they were not strong enough so I used a little bit of boarder adessive ( the type you would use on wall paper ) to hold it up and it worked a treat , When I took it down I did tear it a bit but it was fixable , could you try that ? My pic was no where near as big as yours but it may work . . .

I love the idea that lots of kids have looked at yours and leant about the world from it , I bet them kids tell there own kids about the huge map they had a school when they were little.
So not only do you have a piece of history , you have a educational tool , and a place in the memory of lots of school kids .

As for people been able to see it from your drive you need to stick a large red arrow on it saying you are here Grin

You had be laughing out loud with your suggestion!

AlCalavicci · 10/07/2021 22:47

@Sweetpea1532
I am luckier than some me and DB work for the same company and our paths cross about once a month ,so we can have a 10 min and catch up but it is not the same as been able to go out for a meal and one or the (ahem ) shandy's .

Its good to know PPE is taken very seriously on planes , all that recirculating air means any germs can spread really quickly

OP posts:
AlCalavicci · 10/07/2021 23:02

@Sweetpea1532 ,
Yes it is a room divider , before I moved into this house 20 blurb years ago some bright spark knocked the front room and living room into one and the knocked the wall down that enclosed the stairs so it is now very open plan with a concrete floor and is a real swine to heat , so I am going to use my divider to split the rooms back into two ( I rent so I cant rebuild the wall )

I think me and your DH would get on very well we could set up a decorating business but I would only want to do it part time as the rest of the time I would be with you selling moon pies Grin

Um I can not be held responsible if you click on this link and your DH walks into the room !

When we stripped off the most dated wallpaper we had seen in a long time in the dining room of the house we had just bought. Grey vinyl with big blousey pink roses we found the names of the previous owners and the date. 2 years before.

I couldn’t believe someone had actually picked out this wallpaper within the last 2 decades let alone the last 2 years

It was truly awful

AlCalavicci · 10/07/2021 23:11

@Fairyliz ,
I like thta , if I can find room I will add that too .

As well as everything i listed up thread I have now added
( right at the top of the wall ) Dont look down
I hope the decorating is going well ,
The electric fire behind you cost a bomb to run , don't use it ( is one of them ones that just blow out warm air , you need to be on top of it to feel any heat ! )
The correct position of the wires in the light switch that I have just rewired after it not working for 6 years

I am on mumsnet , look for a thread called what should I write on my wall
And a red hand print with blood drips ( red paint I am using on another wall )
