No , I dont mean things like Live Love Life etc , each to their own but thats really not my thing .

I am in the very long proccess of redecorating , so I am stripping wall paper off .
I all of my old houses there have been little notes under the wall paper 'such and such lives here from x date '
But other than a few decoraters marks and mesurements their is nothing in this house .
So I am going to write somthing like Al moved in to this house on x and did this decorating on , , , today / tomorrows date .

What else can I write ?

What have you found wrote under wall papper ?

My parents house is covered in writing under the wallpaper! It was a new build nearly 40 years ago so everything there was written by us over the years. My dad started a family tree when we first moved in, then has added to it every time he redecorates with new family members or deaths. I wrote about my total adoration for a certain musician back in the 90s, totally forgot about it until my sister sent me a photo when she stripped the walls of her bedroom (that was mine when I was a teen). It's like a little time capsule.

We did this under the flooring. Who lived here, pets, who did the work, the date, lots of random things.

AlCalavicci · 04/07/2021 19:50

@sweetpea1532 Can you think of anything I should add ?

This reminded me of my dad.

When we had dc 2 we needed a stud partition wall putting up. Dh could have taken a month, my dad did it in a day (retired joiner)

He took my penguin book mug, Virginia Wolf's A Room of One's Own and hung it on a nail in a section of the partition with the note "Mini Joy's bedroom built by dad and Grandad" and the date.

Dad passed away 4 years ago and it cheers me to think of the message in the wall Smile

Previous occupants of one of our houses had drawn bad pictures of themselves with a labelled representation of his penis. Builder friend removed a loose strip of wallpaper to inspect the plaster and was quite embarrassed.

I wouldn’t write on the plaster, if I wanted to leave a time capsule I’d put it under the floor.

OhRene · 04/07/2021 20:36

We found my daughter's school friend's names scrawled over the walls. They're grown up now but it turned out one friend lived here in early primary school.

OP, you need to google and write down some terrible dad jokes.

I would think that would of been a squirm moment , I am sticking to facts and clean jokes . I have bastard concrete floors so I cant hide anything under there , perhaps when my wallet has recovered and I can afford carpet upstairs I ma hide something under the floor boards then

When we had the last house re carpeted, Dh wanted to draw and outline of a body like you see on murder mystery films, and blood spatter near the head made from red paint. Luckily he went to wrk and the carpet man finished before he got home.

AlCalavicci · 04/07/2021 20:48

@JoyOrbison , my granddad was a builder and loved leaving things ( with owners knowedge ) in walls / under floors

What a great idea. I'd definitely write about covid - what it is, lockdown, how many deaths. It's such a historical event is a plague

NetballHoop · 04/07/2021 21:04

We have left a few messages on the walls but DH (who is a little obsessive about this) has always hidden a little "treasure trove" in every place we've lived in containing one of every coin currently in use from the year we moved in, a photo of each room and the outside of the place and a bunch of receipts for our weekly shopping.

He stuffs them under the floorboards or in the loft or anywhere he can find.

Sadly we have never (yet) found anything when we've moved in.

Ormally · 04/07/2021 21:27

I had a little brown named wage packet behind plaster that fell off on a wall, and a cork with a 5p stuck in the end, presumably of the year it was put there. This was in a hole that had a nail embedded in it though.

Write how much wallpaper you need/ed to cover the room along with your 'so you don't like it then...' (might come in handy to you or another!)

One I have not forgotten - not about wallpaper but written cunningly on a snowy lawn once - was 'Thought of it, and so I did it'.

Your thread is hilarious!!! Unfortunately, I can't read what you've written other than " Too much sex makes you see double"!

You have activated the curse of Anaglypta!

GraceMelbury · 05/07/2021 01:14

@speakout we did the Sally Sparrow one when we redecorated our spare room a few years ago! It was good fun (we are all big Dr Who fans.)

Sweetpea1532 · 05/07/2021 01:15

@AlCalavicci
Have you written " I'm a nut for Maltesers..a delicious malted ball of candy covered in milk chocolate " ? " Have you tried Horlicks powder yet...ummm delicious! " How about, " "please allow your children to chalk on the neighbour's drive"
" I once won a triple chalk holder because I was the first to claim it as mine"
"I hope you enjoy our home as much as we did eventhough you've stripped off this lovely wallpaper."
"Keep going! You're almost finished"
"Keep up the good work...it is going to look so nice when you are done"
How about telling what the room you are working on is used for?..."This room was my office...I spent many hours in here..especially during the covid19 pandemic lockdown"
"Hello, I knew you'd come".

Has anything exciting happened on your street ( other than chalking the drive, obs)?
You could write some details about a particular shrub or tree that you've planted that is special and when you planted it.

I'll keep thinking < uh oh, Sweetpea1532 "s brain is going to overheat>

I am loving that you are sharing some of your memories and details with the future owners who may not even be born yet!

Sweetpea1532 · 05/07/2021 01:38

How about some favourite recipes? Or tell about your hobbies..."I like to read murder mystery books"..."I enjoy knitting "

"I'm glad you've found my sign as it means you didn't take the lazy way out and just paint over the wallpaper."
"Have a nice day " "Hang in there"
" Peace" Flowers

Sweetpea1532 · 05/07/2021 02:11

@Sweetpea1532
I knew you would come up with some good ideas !

I certainly will add the price of a box of Maltesers .
I will insist that they allow their DCs to write in chalk on the pavements ( and I will write that in chalk )

Keep going your nearly done is a good idea too ,
the paper ( well actually a mural ) is going at the bottom of my stairs so not a room as such .
If / when I get round to repaper the stair wall I will draw a little man walking up each step getting more and more out of breath

If I write anything about MN , should I add my user name ???

I love this!

I was replacing some flooring in the walk-in cupboard in the hall in our house a few years ago, and found a newspaper published on the day of my birthday, but from 1957... it both freaked me out a little bit and also reassured me, I've always loved this house and felt very personally connected to it.
