Man sprawled on front step. WWYD?

I live in a flat and when the takeaway man came over an hour ago he said a man was banging on the front door and vomiting everywhere (Angry)

Looking out I can see the man is still sitting sprawled across our front step. I moved in 4 months ago and have met all neighbours apart from one, a man. So it could well be him. He hasn't buzzed any of the other flats and he's just sitting there. It will get dark soon. I don't know for sure he lives here but seems probable.

WWYD? I don't want to deal with it at all but feel some sympathy

Ring the police, OP, and let them deal with it. Keep inside.

Applesandpears23 · 02/07/2021 21:13

Can you speak to him from an upstairs window?

Lizzie523 · 02/07/2021 21:14

I've been on hold to the policefor ten minutes and the message is to expect a significant delay.

Tbh I am quite annoyed. I've had a really stressful week and in need of a relaxed evening. I think this is a drink idiot situation.

What are you annoyed? This is what decent people do.

DrinkingWishingSmokingHoping · 02/07/2021 21:16

This thread has made me roll my eyes so hard that now I have a headache. I think I’ll post on MN asking what to do before ringing the police. 🙄🙄🙄

@Lizzie523

You know what *@readytosell* I am quite a young woman, live alone and I haven't encountered this situation before, yes I've come on to ask for advice. What difference does it make to you?
Probably a bit insulting to all young women, those living alone etc etc.

For reference Mumsnet probably isn't the place for possible emergencies, that's the police!

Really hoping my daughters know this 🙄

Thankfully that guy didn't need urgent help.....

Lizzie523 · 02/07/2021 21:17

Because I think he is a neighbour who has got wasted and forgotten his keys.

I've had a shit week and I just want to relax. If I thought he might be unwell that would be different.

The advice is to ring and ask for a welfare check. Just do it 🙄

I wouldn’t do anything, stay in your flat where your safe, chances are he’s just a piss head or druggy. The fact he’s sat up and has been taking to people doesn’t indicate he’s unwell (other than being drunk).

Lizzie523 · 02/07/2021 21:18

@Charbead49 oh yes - hopefully your daughter's aren't as stupid as me! Very helpful comment when I feel anxious about the situation.

PinkLilyPinkRose · 02/07/2021 21:18

Yes it does sound like this man is a drunken idiot. You are doing the right thing phoning the police. Being a drunken idiot is no excuse for sitting on someone’s doorstep, shouting and vomiting. The police are the right people to deal with this.

Is that your medically qualified opinion?

How neighbourly. What’s the betting you had a “Be Kind” Facebook frame last year?
peoplearepeople · 02/07/2021 21:20

A diabetic having a hypo will often present as being drunk.
I had a young guy knocking on my door last year who looked and smelt like he was drunk. He was actually epileptic and really needed help. He'd wet himself and was a mess but I called an ambulance and stayed with him until they came.
I understand you don't want to interact with him. That's totally fine and understandable. But in future you need to call the police in situations like this. You could be risking someones life and it's really not ok to just write off his behaviour as probably drunk. You can't always presume that someone else will do the right thing.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 02/07/2021 21:21

@Whatifitallgoesright

So you open the door and he tells you he's no keys and can he kip at yours until he can sort it in the morning. You feel obliged, you now feel anxious and can't get to sleep as he's stumbling around your living room? Go be kind to someone on the internet.
Jesus, what a leap.
Floralnomad · 02/07/2021 21:23

If he’s moved and vaping it’s fairly unlikely he is actually ill though , I’ve seen lots of diabetics having hypos and epileptics post fit and none of them lit up ! ( or whatever the vaping equivalent is ) .

Maggiesfarm · 02/07/2021 21:23

Call an ambulance. I suppose he could be drunk but he might be ill.

Thehenbunringsock · 02/07/2021 21:25

So weird that you've not actually done anything to help this guy.

gillysSong · 02/07/2021 21:26

This happened to us once. Don't go out, call Police and an ambulance.

Lizzie523 · 02/07/2021 21:26

I've been on hold to the police for a while now. Does that not count @Thehenbunringsock ?

I agree it’s either someone who just wants a sit down when wasted (I have a few around my area) or it’s the guy who has forgotten his keys. I’d ring 101 and they’ll get someone to check he’s ok and move him on if he doesn’t live there or prove he lives there if he does.

FelicityBob · 02/07/2021 21:27

I definitely wouldn’t call an ambulance for someone who appears drunk and is vaping! A diabetic having a life threatening hypo wouldn’t be vaping, not would someone having a stroke. I’d call the police to get him off my doorstep though.
Good luck

Frownette · 02/07/2021 21:27

Put the phone on loudspeaker with earshot and get on with something else

cant understand why you are mucking about.
999 job.
For all you know he might have a knife.
Aside from being very unwell.
