38 years since Banarama's Cruel Summer was released. How can it be?!

38 years. One of my favourite songs, I really wanted to be Siobhan and I may have even had a pair of dungarees. Pah! tho the Spice Girls those three were the original Girl Power.

Yikes scary! I remember dancing to this at the school disco! Wow so many memories.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 09:32

34 years since 'I heard a Rumour'. It just seems like yesterday. YY to discos. Grin

I loved Bananarama back in the day and used to dress just like them. I even had the blonde backcombed hair.

wizzywig · 29/06/2021 09:37

They still look amazing. Time to ask alexa to play some bananarama

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 29/06/2021 09:37

You must be mistaken.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2021 09:55

Next year the film ET will be FORTY YEARS OLD Shock

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2021 09:57

And Ghost is over 30 years old.

YABU for starting this thread OP. It never ends well for those of us in our 40s and 50s who are still young in our heads.

HerBigChance · 29/06/2021 09:59

Keren was always the cool one, though.

Spidey66 · 29/06/2021 10:01

Ahh happy days.

I remember them being brought to our attention by the Fun Boy Three.

Silkiecats · 29/06/2021 10:03

I love this song but it didn't come out 38 years ago, it was about 10 years ago and we are all in our 20s still. Grin

Ooooh Fun Boy Three! I'd almost forgotten them!
Vinorosso74 · 29/06/2021 10:05

That makes me feel ancient! I've seen them on a load of old TOTP and forgot quite how many songs they did. No skimpy outfits back then!

Annasgirl · 29/06/2021 10:06

I’m with you @Silkiecats😂😂😂

I always wanted to be Keren! And I dressed like them too. DD found some old photos of teenage me recently and she said ‘wow, you really must have stood out from the crowd, living in such a small town and dressing like that’ ! 😂

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 10:08

@BarbaraofSeville, i should have posted in AIBU. Grin

They've still got it.

Yes I agree. The OP has obviously got the dates wrong.
newnortherner111 · 29/06/2021 10:09

Agree they were the real girl power. As opposed to a group put together by a man and managed by a man, the Spice Girls.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 10:11

@Honeyroar you are right. I have double checked. It was in fact released last year and we are all still at school. Phew. What a nightmare. Grin

Exactly. They didn't put up with any messing about either. Pete Waterman did actually say they were a nightmare to work with though.

One of my favourite songs. Quite recent, isn't it? I mean, not that old ...

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 10:14

Pete Waterman on Bananarama-

They’re three extremely funny girls. I look back at 30 years and working with Bananarama was the best buzz because you never knew what you were going to get. They’d drive you to dementia or get you locked up – there was nothing in between. You could be outrageous when you were with Bananarama because they would be doubly outrageous. I could write a book about them, just because they’re that good of a story."

I remember seeing Jennifer Saunders on Graham Norton and she was saying that they kind of got the inspiration for Patsy and Edina from Bananarama after having a night out with them and seeing how they just really enjoyed themselves, got very drunk and didn't give a shit what people thought.!

JellyNo15 · 29/06/2021 10:16

Saw them live in Taunton two years ago. They were amazing and they both still look great too.

Turquoisesol · 29/06/2021 10:16

I am a little too young to remember bananarama but it’s so refreshing to watch video where the singers aren’t all virtually in their underwear while singing.

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 10:17

Talking of Jennifer Saunders this was funny, charity single they did with Banarama. Help!

Yep no Bananarama cleavage or mini skirts. I don't think they had a stylist, they just wore what they wanted. Grin
