38 years since Banarama's Cruel Summer was released. How can it be?!

38 years. One of my favourite songs, I really wanted to be Siobhan and I may have even had a pair of dungarees. Pah! tho the Spice Girls those three were the original Girl Power.

Proof positive that time is not linear and that we are all in fact living in a parallel dimension where time is passing much slower !!!! :)

From 2.30 onwards. Drinking with Bananarama sounds cool Grin
WingingItSince1973 · 29/06/2021 10:25

Absolutely love this song. Represents some good times in my teens. Am 48 now and can't comprehend soon I'll be 50!!! Where has the time gone? 😱

Daisypaisy · 29/06/2021 10:25

“I love this song but it didn't come out 38 years ago, it was about 10 years ago and we are all in our 20s still. Grin

This!!

They’ve def still got it, saw them at glasto 2019, awesome show!

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 29/06/2021 10:25

What?!?!

Still one of my favourite songs, and was on one of the episodes of Lovecraft Country recently....pretty much the highlight of the series!

Honeyroar · 29/06/2021 10:28

Didn’t Jennifer Saunders base Patsy on Bananarama because she went on a night out with them during comic relief and they literally fell out of the taxi they were so drunk!

Honeyroar · 29/06/2021 10:28

Oops already mentioned!

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 10:31

I want to go drinking with Bananarama now.Grin

So that's why Patsy sort of slithered out of the taxi on AbFab.

What’s really weird is that the song still sounds great now, but if you’d played music from the late 1940s in the early 1980s it would have sounded insanely dated.
I played “California Love” by Tupac the other day and my 10 year old was like “this is a good song, is it new?” (When he’s normally scathing of anything “old”) and I said “it’s from about 1994!” and he was horrified that he’d been tricked.
But it did make me realise how music hasn’t changed massively in the last 25/30 years or so.

BigSandyBalls2015 · 29/06/2021 11:16

38 years 😳
God that was a fabulous summer!

Sparklingbrook · 29/06/2021 12:27

I subject my DSs to my 80s Spotify playlist regularly. They will even admit when they thing something is a good tune. Caught DS1 (21) singing along to 'Don't You Want Me' Grin

Cruel Summer is used in Cobra Kai on Netflix too...watching that makes me realise the woman in the mirror isn't my mother but me..seeing the characters from karate kid as middle aged men and women too...I need a time machine...or maybe we are in a 'dream' , dreaming we are grown up...I'm 54...playing at being an adult..I too have a Spotify kid/ teen playlist.😉

So true. It's not us that's wrong, it's the universe!
Bluesheep8 · 29/06/2021 13:37

Keren was always the cool one, though.

I KNEW it! My two blonde friends and I used to pretend to be Bananarama and I always had to be Keren because I'm dark Grin

KatherineJaneway · 29/06/2021 17:33

Don't You Want Me

That song has also stood the test of time.

As has 'Together in Electric Dreams' ❤️

I had a long journey with DS2 today. He was subjected to my Spotify playlist as ever. Generally 80s stuff.
He was questioning why all the tracks are sooo long. It's because I generally download the extended remix/night version like what you'd get on a 12" rather than 7" single back in the day. He said that's not a thing these days.

It's sad he'll never know the joy of going into Virgin records with your £1.79 to get the 12" track on the day of release. Sad He didn't seem to think so though.Grin

Ah, memories of dancing to 'Robert De Niro' s Waiting' at someone's party, around 1984. My friend was convinced Robert was 'talking to Tanya' 😂

Saucery · 29/06/2021 19:05

Robert De Niro’s Waiting has quite a dark backstory iirc. A girl taking refuge from abuse in her daydreams. All wrapped up in a jaunty, sugary little popsong.

YouLando · 29/06/2021 19:25

Saucery wow, I had no idea about that 😳

Strokethefurrywall · 29/06/2021 19:43

I absolutely adore this song, it takes me back to my childhood so much.
I played Summertime by Will Smith yesterday and my kids only know him as the megastar actor who came here and played the steel pans with my friend (we are in Cayman Islands).
They were all, “wait, Will Smiths a singer too? Does he have any good songs?”
Child, please.

But I agree that music hasn’t really aged since around 1995. Songs that were brilliant then still sound so current. I still blast out Sandstorm by Darude and The Prodigy and my kids still think it’s current. They’re 9 & 7 and their only frame of reference is Baby Shark and Gangnam Style…

CheerfulBunny · 29/06/2021 19:48

I love this song, still sounds fresh. Makes me feel like dancing in baggy denim dungarees with madly backcombed hair.

My friends scoff when I claim the ‘Robert de Niro’s Waiting’ is a classic.

indignatio · 29/06/2021 20:41

Tunnel of love. Fun boy three. My classic teenage song
