I can't see there's already a thread about this. So shocked and sad!!

It's such an unpleasant video, isn't it? He looks like a complete psychopath. I eat meat, so appreciate my own hypocrisy, but this is just awful. The way he handles the deer's head. It makes you wonder about society without laws. He looked blood thirsty.

UCOinSteveArnottsPants · 28/06/2021 06:49

Ugh. That’s really vile and quite upsetting actually.

Bagelsandbrie · 28/06/2021 07:02

I’m not going to watch the video but anyone who hunts for sport is absolutely vile.

IToldYouIWasCummins · 28/06/2021 07:02

I’m not watching this but isn’t it interesting how he portrays himself as such a calm, gentle personality on TV. To shoot an animal and then show it no compassion or respect in death says a lot about the person’s psyche.

RonniePickering · 28/06/2021 07:03

Ewww the wanker 😤

Juststopasking · 28/06/2021 07:10

Can't get worked up about this. Deer need to be culled. It's not an endangered species and he says he's going to eat it. Definitely a more humane life and death than any factory farmed animal.

BalloonSlayer · 28/06/2021 07:10

I don't want to watch the video but deer stalking is the ultimate in free range meat, you creep up on the deer and shoot it , it didn't know you were there, had no fear, was not in the back of a lorry for hours etc.

Unless you never eat meat etc . . .

mycatthinksshesatiger · 28/06/2021 07:27

This is the reality behind those neat little supermarket packages. Animals are killed every day to satisfy the cravings of humans. Phil Spencer does not come across as a nice person after this, but at least he's honest enough to kill his own meat. There's a Jamie Oliver clip where he says anyone who eats meat should be prepared to see how it arrives on their plate. As others have said, the life and death of most factory farmed animals is far, far worse. It's Phil's pleasure you are obviously disturbed by, but next time you yourself enjoy a steak or bit of chicken have a think about how it got onto your plate. Apologies for being preachy (I'm an annoying vegan, but the outrage on here is typical of the animals as pets vs animals as meat cognitive dissonance a lot of people have. It's hypocrisy on a societal scale.

I get it. It takes us back to the basics, man against beast, an equal struggle. Okay, the man may have a powerful rifle, custom-made optics, and the opponent may be a herbivore, but it is still a brutal struggle from which the man can emerge proud.
Carycy · 28/06/2021 07:35

Anyone who eats meat and hating on him is a total hypocrite. They would rather live in ignorance and let someone else do the dirty work. He killed the deer cleanly and plans to eat it. What is the problem?

Melitza · 28/06/2021 07:36

If he killed the deer to be eaten then I dont see any problem with him shooting it tbh.
It's slightly strange him talking to a dead deer but I assume that was due to being filmed.

There was a programme about the Cairngorms on Saturday. In the absence of natural predators the deer are culled regularly to help prevent illness.

Unless pp's on here are vegan, I'm not, then no cause for complaint.

Indigopearl · 28/06/2021 07:37

Unless you are a vegetarian I don't think you can judge Phil for this. That deer's life and death by a bullet was probably a lot more humane than the way most meat arrives on the table.

I haven't seen the video and it seems tasteless but, I agree, deer need culling. If you eat meat it's better to eat game than factory farmed meat but rejoicing in it (unless you are a hungry hunter-gatherer) is unpleasant.
HelloMrBond · 28/06/2021 07:43

There is a growing problem in this country with the ever increasing numbers of wild deer. There are currently more deer roaming the land than at any other period in purchase history. What do deer enjoy eating? Tree saplings and the bark from slightly older trees. They create untold amounts of damage to our countryside, and at a time when we are trying to plant more vegetation to offset carbon. It’s a fact of life that they need to be culled, this is done humanely and they resulting meat is among the most healthy that you’ll find anywhere.

Winkywonkydonkey · 28/06/2021 07:47

I've watched it. He says he'll remember it his whole life which sounds like he doesn't do this regularly. Hes proud of his shot, which I think is a bit gross but at least he didn't botch it. I can't get worked up about it when I eat venison.

lollipoprainbow · 28/06/2021 07:49

Yeah the way he grabbed the head and then let go like it was rubbish to him awful.

newnortherner111 · 28/06/2021 08:09

Whilst I eat meat and accept that there are some wild animals that should be culled/killed to protect other species and biodiversity, it should never be a sport or somehow a pleasure.

I never watch Phil Spencer's programmes and perhaps the OP and others should do the same.

i think you'll find humans do more damage to the countryside than deer do, and there's more humans roaming the land than ever before so shall we cull the humans too?
catsoop · 28/06/2021 08:17

@happinessischocolate

I was just going to reply the same thing.
There is nothing more destructive to this earth than humans.

They do cause an immense amount of damage to crops, and no other predator. Our front troughs were completely stripped of wallflowers in under 10 minutes, watched a deer do it. They leap a 5ft fence to enter the garden. Once slight movement and they're gone, so that shot deer would have had no stress, instant death and absolutely no i-deer (!, sorry!) it would be on a plate in days.

The objection is not to the killing, it is to the joy some people find when they take a life. It is psychopathic.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 28/06/2021 08:51

I've never liked him or Kirstie. Snobby smug pair.

But don't all meat eaters find joy in eating dead animals? It's the same thing, they're just paying someone else to kill them.

Don’t all meat eaters find joy in eating dead animals? God I’ve never even considered it and yet yes, I suppose we do if it’s a particularly nicely cooked steak.

We’re all psychopaths!!!

I agree with you in principle - while Halal meat is produced I can't get worked up about someone shooting and eating a deer, but it would have been less unpleasant had he been a bit more respectful.
