I can't see there's already a thread about this. So shocked and sad!!

It's an odd video. Phi Spencer does sound creepy on it.
People eat deer all the time and call it venison. People are upset because they see a lovely animal which has been shot dead

wisteriaandwhine · 28/06/2021 12:21

"Murder" means the crime of intentionally killing a human being.

Killing a deer is not murder.

DumbestBlonde · 28/06/2021 12:29

@oldwhyno

There are a million far more important things in the world to be getting in a tizzy about.
There are IMPORTANT things - but how we as humans treat creatures that we SHARE the planet with is just as important - certainly MORE important than, say Matt The Twat Hancock's antics (which I actually believe to be manufactured).

Isn't the human brain (of course, as top of the Food Chain) wonderful, being able to think - and care - about more than one thing at once?

wisteriaandwhine · 28/06/2021 12:31

Even meat-eaters can demonstrate sympathy, compassion and understanding towards animals, who have their own internal lives that we have somehow claimed the right to obliterate.

"somehow claimed the right to obliterate" ? What are you on about? All life forms eat other life forms. Life is just one circular community.

Do you think humans exist separately from the natural world and the inherent reality that life requires death? We are part of nature.

I don't understand how anyone can call themselves an animal or nature lover if they are so detached from reality as to not appreciate the fundamentals of the natural world and our place in it as animals. It's so arrogant.

"Murder" means the crime of intentionally killing a human being.

Killing a deer is not murder.

I wrote a snotty email to Woman's Hour/You and Yours (one of them) the other week, telling them that, MEAT is not butchered, the ANIMAL is butchered. Even if I am wrong - I just felt that it was removing that important word that enables us to diminish what actually happens.

I don't disagree with what you are saying. And as I said, I dodn't want to be "preachy" - and don't need to be preached at.

I am fully aware of the circle of life, and nature being "red in tooth an claw"; I do not consider myself to be SO separate from it that it does not touch on my life, or those of my animals (both true herbivores and 100% carnivores).

But I personally try to actively avoid ANY of the behavuiours (and some/many ARE specific to humans - not cretaures simply following their evolutionary patterns of behaviou through biological necessity) that harm animals in the pursuit of "enjoyment", vanity, greed, entertainment or financial gain. Even scientific and medical advancement - IF I CAN.......

There is so much more to my personal stance towards animals and the natural world than simply avoiding the meat aisle (which I also do).

DumbestBlonde · 28/06/2021 12:51

As I have said, "Earthings" is a film (of facts) that helped me to level up my choices. After watching that, Idiot Phil Spencer's pathetic and ghoulish actions will seem mild by comparison.

Powertothepetal · 28/06/2021 13:06

It’s the enjoyment.
That is what is disturbing.

Not the fact that he killed a deer, indeed, stalking and shooting is far preferable ethically to the commercial slaughterhouse.

It is the fact that he is so clearly relished doing it, it was something he really enjoyed and that is absolutely psychopathic and utterly disturbing.

Bryonyshcmyony · 28/06/2021 13:08

What, like someone really enjoying eating a steak?

Bryonyshcmyony · 28/06/2021 13:08

Or is that different because you've paid someone else to do the killing?

Powertothepetal · 28/06/2021 13:16

What, like someone really enjoying eating a steak?
I really don’t think that is comparable.
A steak doesn’t look in any way like an animal.
There’s a big difference between eating a steak knowing it was once a cow and going out and stalking and shooting dead said cow.

I wouldn’t have found it disturbing if he’d just shot it, killed it, picked it up and butchered and eaten it.
It’s the whole ‘I’m so excited, I’ve always wanted to kill one’ speech, the smiling, the giddiness etc.
It’s not normal to take excitement like that in killing something.

TooBigForMyBoots · 28/06/2021 13:19

It's not disturbing at all. I'd much rather that than disengenuous Walrus lamenting.

mustlovegin · 28/06/2021 13:23

I'm against animal cruelty, but, in this case, why 'resurface' a video from 10 years ago?

It reeks of propaganda or the intention to cancel TV personalities that don't fit a certain 'criteria' TBH. Vile

mustlovegin · 28/06/2021 13:24

Some people have too much time on their hands, who's subsidizing all this nonsense?

Zenithbear · 28/06/2021 13:28

He is a first class cunt. Anyone who kills animals for pleasure is imo. It's never fair as it always involves guns and I hate cowardly bullies of any kind.
Cruelty dressed up as sport as if there aren't a million other pastimes.

I agree.

And am ashamed to admit that I was once involved with the hunting fraternity - before the ban. I once followed on foot (never rode out with them although did go out with the hounds for exercise a few times) and was incredily pleased to see Jack easily stroll (I mean it) out of the copppice where the hounds were just bulmbling around, bumping into each other.

On the other hand - and in a sem-response to a PP - when my horse of a lifetime had reached his advanced age and no more winters for him, I was in touch with the hunt kennels, as the tradition is for the hunstman to shoot the horse and then butcher and feed to the hounds. I just could NOT do it..... as practical and traditional - and evern respectful - as it is (meant to be).

(which also brings to main another (C4 I think) documentary, "They shoot horses don't they?" about the awful demise for one of our noblest companion animals......Sad Sad)

Vet and peaceful sleep for the Old Man.

Apologies for slight digression x

cardoon · 28/06/2021 13:45

How can that be your ambition!
To shoot a wild animal minding it's own business!
Disgusting!

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 28/06/2021 19:52

Killing things is a natural instinct though, yes we hope & aim for humans to rise above our basic primal instincts but to say that people who own up to them are utterly psychopathic & disturbing is a bit of an exaggeration.
Lots of so-called animal lovers are equally bloodthirsty when it comes to a chance to exact revenge on other humans...

Powertothepetal · 28/06/2021 20:06

Killing things is a natural instinct though
Is it?
When small children deliberately kill or torture things we don’t tend to shrug our shoulders and think oh that’s just natural instinct.

yes we hope & aim for humans to rise above our basic primal instincts but to say that people who own up to them are utterly psychopathic & disturbing is a bit of an exaggeration
Hmm

Lots of so-called animal lovers are equally bloodthirsty when it comes to a chance to exact revenge on other humans...
Which is equally psycopathic and disturbing.

daisydaisy11 · 28/06/2021 20:09

Disgusting vile man. Only a cowardly psychopath enjoys snuffing the life out of a defenceless animal for fun.

Kittyswhiskers · 28/06/2021 20:23

I’ve always liked Phil Spencer.

Now I think he’s a total knob. I won’t watch anymore programmes that feature him.

Suzi888 · 28/06/2021 20:23

@IToldYouIWasCummins

I’m not watching this but isn’t it interesting how he portrays himself as such a calm, gentle personality on TV. To shoot an animal and then show it no compassion or respect in death says a lot about the person’s psyche.
^ this Always thought he was lovely. What a cunt.

“Don’t all meat eaters find joy in eating dead animals? “ no, I used to eat it, but quit because I prefer animals alive and I don’t like my food beaten and tortured.
My DH still eats meat but wouldn’t kill it himself if you paid him.

Suzi888 · 28/06/2021 20:25

Jesus fucking Christ what the hell is wrong with people - seriously.

Was he intending to eat it?

I'm a little on the fence on this as although I don't eat meat I can see why other people do. I don't know.

CoronaBanana · 28/06/2021 20:29

@Juststopasking

Can't get worked up about this. Deer need to be culled. It's not an endangered species and he says he's going to eat it. Definitely a more humane life and death than any factory farmed animal.

I'll tell you who needs to be culled - Phil fucking Spencer 🤬
