People here seem to forget that within the UK, everything is managed more or less in the natural environment, and herds of deer left to expand and grow ad infinitum is not necessarily humane either. You can end up with malnourished, diseased and injured animals suffering lingering deaths
How do we know this?
Deer herds have always been ‘managed’ on this assumption, but has anyone ever actually tried laying off, not interfering and not touching a thing and observed what happens?

If leaving everything alone has never been tried we don’t know for sure that they would grow ‘ad finitum’ and become unhealthy nor that they would destroy woodland which as I understand it is the main reason for culling.

I would be interested to know how Brian May’s estate is getting on.
That used to be managed by gamekeepers who were then let go.
If May’s estate is still unmanaged it would be interesting to see what has happened.
Have the deer become unhealthy?
Has vast swathes of woodland been destroyed?

I think people need to stop interfering all the time tbh.

In Scotland lots of deer starve to death, there's one.
On lots of areas of the country woodland regeneration is severely affected, so future woodland habitat will be reduced.
Deer aren't managed in most places, numbers are increasing, and crops & habitats are being damaged. Its inevitable.
