This fireplace in my house needs some accessories. I can do photo frames easily enough, but want to balance them with other things that work together. I don't get much chance to pop into shops for ideas and whenever I search online (e.g. Pinterest) I just end up down rabbit holes - even if I do spot something I like it's likely to be on a website on the opposite side of the world, overpriced or long since out of stock. So, I'm hoping you lovely lot can help. If this was your fireplace, what would you put on it and where would you buy it?

Please, help me accessorise this fireplace!

Do you collect anything? I collect skulls and have those on mine, but cute kitten plates or whatever is your thing would be fine too.

MrsFin · 25/06/2021 19:42

What is the rest of the room/house like? Modern or period?

I think I'd start by painting the chimney breast a different colour to make the fire place stand out.

MrsFin · 25/06/2021 19:43

Also get rid of the clock, or put a more interesting one in it's place.

What kind of skulls, @RagzReturnsRebooted?!

Lovely tiles. I’d get a big mirror instead of the clock, personally, then maybe some candles, framed photos and a small plant or two.

TheoMeo · 25/06/2021 19:45

A trailing plant would soften it a bit.

Blossomandbee · 25/06/2021 19:51

I would lose the clock and have either a big oversized clock there, or a nice mirror. I think you'd then need less on the mantle to provide interest.
I would try a mantle clock in the middle (if you don't have a wall one obviously) and maybe a nice candlestick or photo frame at either end.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/06/2021 19:52

Interesting candlesticks from charity shops if it were me.

Wishingwell75 · 25/06/2021 19:52

Remove clock, add mirror, greenery of some kind - a trailing plant (faux if it really was my house!😁) as a pp already suggested, then either a collection of something, or seasonal changeable things, hard to suggest this bit without knowing your taste but anything that makes you smile and brings you joy each time you catch sight of it/them!

This kind of thing.

midsomermurderess · 25/06/2021 19:56

I agree about the clock, it's just dull. What about a piece of art. Look on eg [[https://www.kingandmcgaw.com/artists King & McGaw. They have a huge choice and come with different frames and in different sizes. I'd not clutter the mantel piece with knick knacks but that's personal choice. Nor would I paint the surround.

midsomermurderess · 25/06/2021 19:57

King & McGaw

@RagzReturnsRebooted I collect highland cows Smile that's what on my fireplaces

Pigeonorcoot · 25/06/2021 20:00

Bag ass mirror. Greenery. Collection of whatever junk you fancy.

Pigeonorcoot · 25/06/2021 20:00

big ass

HollowTalk · 25/06/2021 20:00

I have a similar fireplace, OP, though in mahogany. What about a big silver mirror instead of the clock? Then on the shelf itself you could have a plant on the far left or right that falls down the side, photo frames, candlesticks, small pots containing tea lights or vases.

R0SEMARY · 25/06/2021 20:04

Very large mirror or picture
Trailing plant on one side
Tall thin object on the other side ( vase, candlesticks etc )

Meeemow · 25/06/2021 20:36

We already have a large mirror on an adjacent wall, and DH wanted to keep that, and put a clock here. He won that discussion. Smile The clock was about the third one we ordered, and the zillionth we looked at online, so we were quite pleased to eventually find one we both liked, and it's here to stay. I really just need to move forward on the accessories rather than backwards on what's there. I like the trailing plant idea.

Sorry to butt in op, but our fireplace is a similar colour and is made of stone (not sure exactly what type of stone) but I want to paint it, can this be done?

StCharlotte · 25/06/2021 20:51

I used to have a matching pair of these on each end of my mantlepiece. Bought them in Bruges and inspired by a gorgeous restaurant we visited there, I tied vair smart ribbons with a bow. Not as twee as it sounds but might be a bit OTT these days. But the candlesticks would still work I think.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 25/06/2021 20:52

Id fill the mantlepiece with green house plants. That said, I have house plants all over my house and have plans for more, so im a bit obsessed.

StCharlotte · 25/06/2021 20:53

I like the ones covetingthepreciousthings posted as well.

You can buy paint for the outside which should do the trick

Clothes airers?

JonathanRipples · 25/06/2021 21:00

I have a v similar fireplace. We have a big mirror on the chimney breast and some trailing green plants in nice pots on the mantelpiece.

StCharlotte · 25/06/2021 21:00

Oh and a mirror is the law.
