This fireplace in my house needs some accessories. I can do photo frames easily enough, but want to balance them with other things that work together. I don't get much chance to pop into shops for ideas and whenever I search online (e.g. Pinterest) I just end up down rabbit holes - even if I do spot something I like it's likely to be on a website on the opposite side of the world, overpriced or long since out of stock. So, I'm hoping you lovely lot can help. If this was your fireplace, what would you put on it and where would you buy it?

Please, help me accessorise this fireplace!

We have all sorts of tat on ours. It's in the dining room rather than the living room so it never gets used as a fire. It's decorated with micro led lights, fake candles, photos, fake flowers, crystal ornaments, greetings cards and a trophy and an air horn, a load of Lego creations and dust.

If it had to be a clock I'd go far a starburst clock starburst clocks but that one seems to be a deal breaker.

@CarolinaWeeper

For houseplants look at The Little Botanical for some ideas, they come all sorted in lovely pots.
Thanks Carolina. That's exactly the sort of constructive suggestion I'm looking for.

If that was mine the clock would go, an ornate mirror as a replacement and candles along the mantle.

womanity · 26/06/2021 12:54

There’s nothing wrong with your clock.

A tall standing plant on the floor at one side, a tall standing something on mantel at other side. Cluster of small heighted things at other end of mantel.

I probably wouldn’t buy specifically, I’d acquire when I saw stuff I liked.

Alternatively, I’d have suggested cookbook shelf but it looks like you’ve a book shelf to the side.

Viviennemary · 26/06/2021 12:57

Depends what you like. Clock in middle and maybe a few ornaments either side. Old vintage style jampots and honeypots are nice if you like that type of thing. A lot of folk don't.

@TheVolturi sorry for voicing my opinion

SoupDragon · 26/06/2021 13:47

The clock is absolutely fine given you like it! I think it's too low though.

I think a mantelpiece needs something tall, something trailing and something average. A mix of things that you like or will use. A photo is always nice I feel.

cardoon · 26/06/2021 14:04

The clock is proportionally all wrong
You need a large mirror or picture or gallery wall
That clock will never look comfortable there

OrchidLass · 26/06/2021 14:22

@MrsDThomas nothing wrong with voicing your opinion. You were rude though and that wasn't necessary.

SnoopyLights · 26/06/2021 14:23

I like the clock, but if you want to fill the space around it you could put a large frame around it, a bit like they way they framed the peep hole on the door in Friends, just bigger.

I have some fake antlers sitting on our mantel, and a brass trivet that looks like a house. Usually some kind of bunting over it (I bought a lot of those old pennant things that they used to sell as tourist souvenirs and stitched them onto a jute ribbon.

A trailing plant also sounds good.

seymoursmyman · 26/06/2021 15:00

I think you need somethings with decent height at either end as well as the plants as suggested. As it's a kitchen I'd be looking for things like this

I've just found Metal Stars Embossed Jug.
Tall, lightweight metal container perfect for dried arrangements..
£13.95

seymoursmyman · 26/06/2021 15:03

I also think the clock will be absolutely fine once the mantle is dressed. It's just out of balance because it's still bare. IMO Smile

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 26/06/2021 15:15

If it's a kitchen I think it'll look better once it becomes used. Stick a couple of egg cups or salt and pepper shakers on there (we have chicken and duck ones on our kitchen window sill) a few potted herbs or a jug of flowers would be nice. Then you need a few stray hair bobbles, some postcards from a distant aunt and a jar of pound coins for the inevitable parking/fun run / bus fare / non uniform days

Basically I'm of the opinion things don't look quite right when we keep trying to accessorise them. Let it become a bit more used and weathered into the room and it'll look right.

TSSDNCOP · 26/06/2021 16:03

Group a couple of candlesticks at one end, trailing succulent at the other, glass vase with white tulips in the centre with assorted size pictures in between

ScottishNewbie · 26/06/2021 16:41

Big mirror attached to the wall above.
A boston fern in the middle. ( I recommend little botanical).
Then a couple of pillar candles of different heights. (Look better when been burnt a bit).
Then maybe one ornamental piece like a photo frame or figurine.
