Please, help me accessorise this fireplace!

This fireplace in my house needs some accessories. I can do photo frames easily enough, but want to balance them with other things that work together. I don't get much chance to pop into shops for ideas and whenever I search online (e.g. Pinterest) I just end up down rabbit holes - even if I do spot something I like it's likely to be on a website on the opposite side of the world, overpriced or long since out of stock. So, I'm hoping you lovely lot can help. If this was your fireplace, what would you put on it and where would you buy it?

Please, help me accessorise this fireplace!

The thing is that if you have a mirror and trailing plants, you get double the amount of plants because of the mirror. If you don't want a mirror (still think your husband's wrong!) then a picture the size of a mirror would work. What about half a dozen little tea light holders going across?

Meeemow · 26/06/2021 06:55

Did I mention the fireplace is in my kitchen? So the clock works in context, and the adjacent perpendicular wall to the right which has the large (rectangular) mirror on it works well for light reflection. You'll have to take my word for that because I don't want to post a picture of the whole room. The wall to the left has a large rectangular TV on it, so the fireplace wall needed something round. But, like I said, that decision is made, so now I just need to accessorise. Thanks for the links. I'm taking them all into consideration.

The clock or whatever is on that wall needs to be a bigger, currently it's too small and is throwing everything off. On the mantelpiece I'd personally put an interesting candlestick at either side (Etsy or TKMaxx are great for that kind of thing) and a houseplant in the middle to add some greenery....you can get loads that are hassle free. We have a large sansevieria on ours because it doesn't get much light and I only need to water it once a month.

For houseplants look at The Little Botanical for some ideas, they come all sorted in lovely pots.

I have a fireplace in my kitchen that has a couple of plants and some old fashioned cups and saucers on it. I have a couple of old teapots on the hearth and a large hanging mirror above the fireplace itself. And I'm sorry but I agree that the clock (although I like it) looks all wrong placed there.

NeilBuchananisBanksy · 26/06/2021 07:29

The clock is throwing everything off- it's too small for the space and too pale against the paint colour.

If it's your kitchen, plants, decanters, glassware would work. You could hang plates and old wooden breadboards on the chimney if you wanted to.

But get rid of the clock!

ForkHandlesplease · 26/06/2021 07:32

If the clock has to stay I'd put a white picture frame around it to take up more chimney breast. as its kitchen maybe a cream metal jug with or without flowers . Then as pp trailing plant to one side. Candles old t pots anything you like really

ForkHandlesplease · 26/06/2021 07:35

Actually black jug would tie hearth/ tiles in too.

goingtotown · 26/06/2021 07:45

The clock is too small & not in the middle of the wall.

RealHousewifeOfEastLondon · 26/06/2021 08:16

Definitely loose the clock! It's too small and boring. A big mirror or a larger, more interesting clock.

Workyticket · 26/06/2021 08:20

are you crafty? I have a bunting string of mini crochet pumpkins on mine - should have changed it to a string of hearts by now but I can't be arsed to string them 🤣

DinosApple · 26/06/2021 08:38

I was going to say a large overmantel mirror plus trailing greenery, but then I read your updates OP.

The clock is too small for that position, I'd move it to a different wall if you love it, and replace with a large painting, plus some greenery.
Or three bold vases of different sizes and shapes to one side and trailing house plant to the other.

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 08:53

Its terribly boring isn’t it?

Paint it in a heritage blue or green. Go find some candle holders in a charity shop, add a trailing plant to one side. A black or white photo frame, gin bottle with copper lights and you’re done

MrsDThomas · 26/06/2021 08:57

Oh and that clock isn’t to my taste but hey ho.

Is that a real fire? If so, get a log/kindling basket. If not dont as it will Look naff

nembrotha · 26/06/2021 09:21

Agree with PP lose the clock, its the wrong style for your beautiful fireplace, looks like the ones they have in school classrooms that never seem to move fast enough, doesn't suit a relaxing lounge.

How about a carriage clock if DH has to have the time there. Or a watch for his wrist ;)

Op isn't asking if we like it, she's asking how to dress it to make it look good. 🙄
nembrotha · 26/06/2021 09:23

OOps just saw your update about it being a kitchen

boogiewithasuitcase · 26/06/2021 09:30

I have candles that match the colours in the fireplace tiles. I also bought a painting that has similar colours to the (wood) mantelpiece.

StCharlotte · 26/06/2021 09:53

Ah! A kitchen. Well that's a whole different kettle of fish. I like the teacups idea (and had similar in my last kitchen). Also jugs.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 26/06/2021 09:55

@RagzReturnsRebooted

Do you collect anything? I collect skulls and have those on mine, but cute kitten plates or whatever is your thing would be fine too.
Awesome Grin human, or...?
YelloYelloYello · 26/06/2021 10:00

What do you like? Don’t just buy random decorative items; put stuff there that actually makes you happy.

user1493494961 · 26/06/2021 10:03

I think a skull would work.

borntobequiet · 26/06/2021 10:06

The clock is awful. Get a period mantle clock instead. And maybe a pair of candlesticks for the ends as already suggested, and a really nice mirror for the wall.

borntobequiet · 26/06/2021 10:06

Oh it’s a kitchen, well scrub my previous advice.
