For those that hang washing out on the line....

....do you also hang your underwear out? I do and ive never given it a second thought, but I saw my neighbour hang her washing out but take all her underwear back inside and it got me thinking, have I been brazenly displaying my knickers for years? Lightheartedly just wandering what others do.... 🙂

Yes l do, unless no more space left on line then it goes in airing cupboard as easier to dry larger items on the washing line.

merryhouse · 23/06/2021 15:15

Yes, but I do a lot of things various people on MN have described as chavvy Grin

JustMeAndWheatley · 23/06/2021 15:15

Yes, but mine can’t be seen by anyone else. I think I’d still do it if it could be seen but probably not if I had guests round to the garden.

Dyrne · 23/06/2021 15:16

Mine always go out on the line. You’ve got me thinking now though and I don’t think I’ve ever noticed either of my neighbours having female undies out on theirs. Might have to do some research to see if I’ve been scandalising the neighbours all this time Grin

I only have 2 loads of washing to do a week though (3 if I’m doing bedding). Plus I only put washing out in good weather - if shit/cold, it either goes in the tumble dryer or hung up indoors (if non-tumble).

Is it 'chavvy'?!

Chavvy, my arse... 🙄

FluffytheGoldfish · 23/06/2021 15:26

Combination of reasons I don't. Communal garden so not much space to hang things out and the garden is completely viable from the street. I used to use one of those peg things but when my last one broke I had the genius idea of putting all the underwear on the heated towel rail! Now it drys quickly and I don't have deal with all those pegs.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 23/06/2021 15:30

Yes. I do as others do and hang them on the inner lines of the whirlygig though. I don’t think I do it for privacy reasons, I hang the smallest, quickest to dry stuff on the inside lines where there is less space and the larger, heavier stuff on the longer, outer lines.

1forAll74 · 23/06/2021 15:58

I hang everything out, and don't think anything about it. But I have to hang everything out in size order.. When my late Mum came to visit years ago,and I did some washing for her, I used to hang her, always white, big cotton knickers Marks and sparks knickers out before my little, many coloured knickers went out, and we used to laugh about it, and she would say, You wait, you will be wearing the big sensible ones when you get older.!

I used to live in an area, where there was a spate of knicker stealing off lines very frequently, but nobody ever saw the culprits, I think it was some midnight stealers.

Think there is a you tube video, showing a cat who keep s coming home and through a cat flap with knickers all the time.

BurningBright · 23/06/2021 16:29

Not only do I hang my knickers on the line, but I have a big sign that says 'Look at my pants.'

BurningBright · 23/06/2021 16:30

I think the more important question here, however, is do you colour co-ordinate you pegs with your clothing items?

If not, SHAME on you.

lucysmam · 23/06/2021 16:30

Yep, I do. Don't really care who sees 🤷‍♀️

We were talking about hanging washing on the line the other day at work though & it turns out I'm the only one, out of five of us who work together, that does. Everyone else dries them inside.

UseOfWeapons · 23/06/2021 16:54

@LyndaSnellsSniff

I hang underwear out unless it's likely to rain later on because I can't be arsed faffing about unpegging pants and socks in a hurry!
This, exactly what I do!
HelloDulling · 23/06/2021 16:57

Always. I don’t think my neighbours would be surprised that I wear underwear. I hope not, anyway.

BashfulClam · 23/06/2021 16:58

@LyndaSnellsSniff you need one of these. It takes up no suave and if it rains you just unclip it be and take it inside.

imjustanerd · 23/06/2021 17:00

I do but I put it on a separate clothes horse up near the house so it's altogether (absolutely nothing to do with not wanting my neighbours to see my smalls 😉).

DiscoDinoBooBoo · 23/06/2021 17:01

Way too lazy to hang individual pants and socks out. It's a bulk job (I literally have one basket for pants and socks which is emptied when I find I have 1 pair of pants left! Lol) stuff all in the washing machine then all in dryer! Job done!

fussychica · 23/06/2021 17:03

Of course unless it might rain and icba to peg out small bits.

user1471538283 · 23/06/2021 17:03

When we had a private garden with a line I did. Our line is now very overlooked.

Ilovelblue · 23/06/2021 17:09

I used to have an elderly neighbour who was quite a character (all in his head!) so I used to disguise them by pegging a dishcloth in front of them. I'd peg two or three pairs out together and put the dishcloth or tea towel or whatever in front.

Babygotblueyes · 23/06/2021 17:11

Yep, if they see something that scares them it will teach them not to look again!

Odisia · 23/06/2021 17:11

I hang mine out - I can't really understand why anyone wouldn't. They're just clean pants.

PurBal · 23/06/2021 17:12

@RocheLobe

Yes I do and also my cloth sanitary towels. Never given it a second thought
Ditto.

Yes, I do! I also have to have matching pegs on the same item, if they are a mix of wood, or colours, I just can't bear it.

And yes, I do hang my pants and bras on the line. DH complains like hell though, because he says his pants are all crispy in the summer, and he therefore has to iron them. Bless.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 23/06/2021 17:27

I generally do my socks and underwear together in a 60 degree wash, and then tumble dry it because I have shoulder problems and pegging out an infinite number of socks would be painful.

If I had a few pairs in a general wash and was pegging the whole wash out then I would probably put underwear towards the centre of the rotary dryer because that saves the longer, outer bits of line for big clothes.
