Wallah! It's the first time I've seen voilà written this way. But when I think about it, it seems like a really obvious thing to do so I wonder how common it is.
Is it a "thing" that I've just missed before now?

Just saw ‘viscous dog’ on another thread. Amazing mental image of a Labrador dripping in slime Grin

@Cocogreen

A young woman in DH's office told everyone her father was having a Midnight Crisis. Also Woah instead of Whoa grates on me.
What's a midnight crisis?
Cocogreen · 15/06/2021 10:49

Sorry -by Midnight Crisis - she meant midlife crisis ( he'd bought a sports car ).

CustardySergeant · 15/06/2021 11:14

RaraRachael Library is correct.

@Mamette

“Willy been” is almost certainly the work of a non-native speaker.

Unless Amazon have added new services that I haven’t heard about.

I thought this (once I'd eventually worked it out).
Justcashnosweets · 15/06/2021 11:44

@MrsReeves Bone Apple Teeth is my absolute favorite 🤣

YouokHun · 15/06/2021 12:24

There is a roadside sign by a fruit stall near me that says,

“Fresh cherryie’s’ for sale”.

It’s like they’ve de died to cover all the bases and gone for an apostrophe before and after the S but also gone for “ies”, but also kept the “y”. Lovely people and I would never say anything to them but it is a bit odd. I think if I was that unsure I’d find someone to ask before going to all the trouble they’ve gone to in painting the sign.

YouokHun · 15/06/2021 12:26

*it’s like they’ve decided

That’ll teach me to point out the errors of others Blush

I deliberately buy from stalls like that as there is something charming about it. I wouldn't buy Ladie's Nix's though.

I used to walk past a storefront office in NYC that had a sign in the window that said "Business Consulter". Smile

I've seen people selling Jack Rustle puppies and Chiwawa 🤦🏼‍♀️

That’s probably a sub-brand by Uniqlo or something.

@pussycatlickinglollyices

"Ooh, aren't you the cats bananas?" Hmm
I want to use this one now.

I may start using that for my (very charity shop and second hand clothing inspired) Goth wardrobe! Smile

In Barbara Tuchman's glorious book on medieval history (A Distant Mirror), she writes of Enguerrand de Coucy, whom the English naturally referred to as Ingleram. Grin

It's become a household phrase, as in, "OMG he's been Inglerammed," when someone mangles a foreign name.

The navy also has a tradition of this sort of thing...

@LemonJuiceFromConcentrate

The funniest ones are when it’s clearly not that the person actually struggles with literacy, but just that they’ve misheard something and then subconsciously constructed a justification for it. Proper eggcorns rather than spelling struggles
Like Joey's moo point!
BikeRunSki · 15/06/2021 17:26

@YouokHun

My favourite random sign spelling ever, was in relation to a cooked breakfast at Washington services on the A1 about 20 years ago. The sign invited you to “Cho’o’se” 6 items.

Obviously puppy farms.
ChrisOnTheBeach · 15/06/2021 20:10

@BreakingtheIce

I can’t believe some of these!
LOL. Grin Many of them are pretty believable, and I have seen quite a lot of them.

But there are a small handful that sound a bit far fetched.

'Bone apple teeth' for bon appetite sounds a bit far fetched IMO. And a couple of others too, but most of them sound believable to me, and as I said, I have heard some of them/seen some of them myself.

A neighbor (recently deceased, rest her soul) used to pronounce your "Chiwawa" as spelled.."Chee Hoo-ah hoo-ah." And would argue it till the cows came home if you tried to correct her,
smellyjellycopter · 15/06/2021 21:04

I love the idea of a Jack Rustle puppy!
