Wallah! It's the first time I've seen voilà written this way. But when I think about it, it seems like a really obvious thing to do so I wonder how common it is.
Is it a "thing" that I've just missed before now?

@WhatInFreshHell

I've come across "out of the blew" a frightening amount of times recently.
This made me guffaw at my desk and has given away the fact I'm on MN Grin

Benjispruce3 · 15/06/2021 07:52

If something is final, it’s finite so definite becomes definitely. That’s how I taught my DC to spell it.

Ceebs85 · 15/06/2021 07:53

I work for a crisis team and the admins write up our referrals and what the referrer has said.

I've seen 'high rate' instead of irate more times than I care to remember

@Egeegogxmv

I think some of these errors can be attributed to speech typing?
I think so too.
stackemhigh · 15/06/2021 08:01

Willy been gringrin

Willy Been sounds like a serial killer.

Duvetflower · 15/06/2021 08:06

I bought a pushchair rain cover suitable for Trenshall rain. I imagine it's a very wet town up North.

I'll take Collins Dictionary's word over yours in this case

@CaptainMyCaptain is correct, whilst card shark is accepted use nowadays (and what I use) the original phrase was card sharp.

In that case, it's an error that has become accepted.

@LittleDidSheKnow

It baffles me that people just walk around aping sounds with no thought to what they might mean

Me too. It reminds me of being a child and singing pop songs with the words all wrong. Sometimes I’d have completely made up words in there, too. I just assumed I didn’t understand because it was grown up stuff.
But when you’re an actual grown up, surely you expect what you’re saying to make sense? Surely you question what you hear if it seems ungrammatical/nonsensical/illogical? Surely you say “No, that can’t be right” and so check what you’re writing or saying?

They do!

In many of our schools (NZ) teachers are called Matua or Whaea (pron. fire) , Māori names for teacher. A bunch of parents at the local school call the female teachers "Sapphire". Morons.

DoreenWinkings · 15/06/2021 08:27

I assume a son shed is the juvenile version of a man cave.

It's quite strange, as usually if you can spell words like 'standalone', 'mounted' etc then you can spell 'sun' and 'shade'.
spanielstail · 15/06/2021 08:58

I can't believe how normal it has become to use of instead of have. - must of / could of.

I understand how it sounds like could've but I don't understand if you have a basic grasp of grammar how you can use "of" in that context.

BIWI · 15/06/2021 09:16

@MumofSpud

pedants' corner is that way

Aaaah I really wanted your apostrophe to be in the wrong place

Well we could debate whether it's just one pedant, or several! Grin

BreakingtheIce · 15/06/2021 09:36

I can’t believe some of these!

Lockheart · 15/06/2021 09:40

I thought of this thread this morning. A comment on a news article about HGVs driving through a small village - "their a mennis" (they're a menace).

LittleDidSheKnow · 15/06/2021 09:42

Took me a while to work out what a willy been is!

I may start using “whilborough” now, though... sounds much classier than wheel barrow!

Mamette · 15/06/2021 09:44

“Willy been” is almost certainly the work of a non-native speaker.

Unless Amazon have added new services that I haven’t heard about.

JorisBonson · 15/06/2021 09:53

Willy been. I'm done. Goodnight Grin

Cocogreen · 15/06/2021 10:14

A young woman in DH's office told everyone her father was having a Midnight Crisis.
Also Woah instead of Whoa grates on me.

ChrisOnTheBeach · 15/06/2021 10:15

@UsedName000

I saw this on the Next website. I emailed them to point it out (I was a bit bored 😀) and a customer services person replied to say that they had “past” it to their manager to look into. I gave up at that point…
