Having a discussion about the friends characters and who was the best so decided to ask on here everyone’s opinions.
My list is...

Hard to pick my favourites as such as agree through the seasons they all changed.

I think Rachel and Chandler had the biggest growth as people (characters). Rachel came from a very spoilt background with a controlling father and really made something of herself.
Chandler also really developed emotionally and I loved the later seasons when he married Monica and became a father.
Monica and Ross were the least interesting characters for me and I much preferred their parents as characters!

People have made some interesting points. I have to say I don’t hate any of them, my list is based on who I related to the most! But I have to say I absolutely adore chandler! I think it’s because other than being incredibly cute he is too damn funny and sarcastic, traits that I myself have...
Like someone else said. I believe him and Rachel had the most growth on the show. I loved him with Monica. IMO I prefer them as a couple more than Ross and Rachel.
Matthew Perry is incredibly funny from interviews I’ve seen in the past. I love him in his one episode he did in cougar town with Courtney. He played an asshole in the good wife but he is so versatile it just impresses me. It sucks that he had a hard time.
Collectively they were a fantastic cast and I couldn’t imagine anyone else playing these characters.

Gosh I can't choose but i know phoebe and Monica wouldn't be at the top although even they have some great moments. That's as much as I'm willing to commit to 😆

I think the reason it’s such a hard question is precisely because they work so well as a group. That group is much more than the sum of its parts.

I read that the original plan was for the show to be very much ‘Monica and Friends’, but the producers realised early on that it worked better as can ensemble piece. It’s interesting that many other high profile US sitcoms of the era - ‘Ellen’, ‘Caroline in the City’, ‘Suddenly Susan’ - were built around a lead/star, but didn’t last as long as ‘Friends’ and certainly didn’t stand the test of time in terms of popularity.

It never surprised me that ‘Joey’ (the spin-off) failed. Joey was always portrayed as the one who needed the others most; it made no sense that he’d voluntarily leave the others behind. He wasn’t strong enough a character to carry a show on his own.

Mine change as the series goes on really, but I think Joey over all and then the others jostling for position behind him depending on what season we're talking about. Rachel was probably my least favourite though. I liked Mike and didn't really like David that much though.

I agree with PP that Chandler and Rachel grew the most as characters and that Joey wasn't really a strong enough character to carry a series alone - in order to make it workable I feel like they changed some fundamental things about his character.

Wow I didn’t realise Ross was the human equivalent of Marmite!

Although flawed (aren’t we all) he is BY far the best character: pivot, leather pants, spray tan etc

Loved Janice, stopped watching when Emily arrived.

I really couldn't stand Phoebe, I had a friend at the time who used to do this 'ooh I'm so ditzy, silly me, I'm such a blonde ' act when she was just being a balls out cowbag, and she reminded me of Phoebe so much.

Agree with others who have said that Phoebe is mean and not particularly funny. Find she is at her nastiest in later series. So my list would be:

I think Ross has grown on me as i’ve gotten older. I used to find him the least funny but now I think he’s hilarious! Don’t know why, I guess my humour must have matured 😂😂

Ross is the absolute best one, the others I found hard to choose because I like them all at certain points in different ways. I know people have issues with Ross but I just love him.

It’s funny that Joey starts out being portrayed as this ‘love em and leave em’ lothario, but is pretty much the nicest of the bunch from day one. I can’t think of any terrible behaviour moments, which I can for all the others.
