Urgent hedgehog advice needed

Hoping for some reassurance as really worried
We have a few hedgehogs here always see them at night, anyway neighbour is mowing grass and obviously disturbed one who must have been asleep In undergrowth next to their fence. I was having a coffee and hedgehog ran out of undergrowth - really surprised me and luckily headed straight for the shed as the door was open. I watched him climb over things and it looks like he’s disappeared under some stuff in there. I have left a saucer of water in there and some hedgehog food my question is will he be okay in there for today and is he likely to come out when it gets dark, hate to think of him being in distress.
Thanks in advance 🦔

He will be fine, you might be able to see him if you look, you will know if he is ok if the food gets eaten, leave the shed door open. Can you check the area it came out from, I dont know when they have babies.

Oldraver · 12/06/2021 11:01

He'll come out when he feels safe, probably at dark

Or you may be lucky and find he likes the shed and makes it his new home

SappysCurry · 12/06/2021 11:05

😥thank you …
We had two, last year that turned into four I think that was late summer as it was darker quite a lot earlier but I could still see the small ones.
The shed is an utter mess so there are plenty of nice dark and cool hiding places which is good I guess ? I know they really hate bright lights so It’s lucky that’s where he went…will keep my eye on the food and drink too.
I’ve just been on Dorset wildlife trust website hoping they had live chat but no luck there
Thanks mumsnetters - as usual 😍

Oh dear just looked up and it says they have babies June/July
Will check under the shrubs carefully and hope there aren’t babies left alone

My DDs work at a hedgehog rescue, this is the time of year when they start getting babies in if the mother has abandoned them (can happen if they are disturbed/scared - sometimes they eat them instead ☹️) or if she has been killed. It’s a good idea to look but if you do find any dont get too close and don’t touch or move them - just keep a close eye and hopefully, if that was the mother she will make her way back. Keep a look out. If you find any and the mother doesn’t go back within a couple of hours then get in touch with a local rescue for advice because time will be of the essence.

Thank you - Oh dear, so worried now
I have seen him (hopefully a him) in the shed was eating and has spilled some of the water which I’ve topped up
Looks fine just a little frightened obviously
I’m trying to keep away
I was going to mow the grass but that means getting the lawnmower out of shed so will, leave that for today.
Thanks everyone

Thank you so much I’m trying to pluck up the courage to have a look - it’s very thick and overgrown (perfect for hedgehogs obviously) Compton Acres it definitely isn’t ! For what it’s worth I only saw two last night on the feeding bowl, though I should imagine the really tiny ones don’t venture out until later. Wish me luck

You should see my pile of garden weeds. Make sure you are wearing thick gloves, all sorts of creatures live in overgrown grass. Good luck, would love to see a photo if you can get one and that hoggie is safely reunited with their family.

SappysCurry · 12/06/2021 11:59

@DogsSausages
Will try thank you so,much for helping - I have gloves
Fingers crossed there is nothing there though 🦔

I wonder if they are the adult ones there now, you are very caring to look after them.

Thank you I love them 🥰 I was wondering the same thing. There was one last year was really big he came in the kitchen one evening remember when it was so hot last year so all doors open, was curled up in a ball in the corner so funny as the cat didn’t even notice him 😂 I picked him carefully with gloves on and put him outside he was fine, and I had one sat on my foot last year when I was wearing flip flops, felt really warm and soft. We have squirrels here too (three youngsters now) and frogs and foxes but I’m not keen on them coming in as they scare the cat. But I can’t stop them obviously I think they like the ‘Wild garden’ Anyway I have had a look and can’t see anything but that is t to say they aren’t there as it’s dense, I had a rare half hours silence as well and I can’t hear any rustling, nor in shed Will do hedgehog watch later and if there are still two around I will feel much happier Thanks for all your help have a lovely day, it’s glorious here 🙂

If you're on Twitter ask @HedgehogCabin or phone hedgehogcabin.info/ She's very good.

SappysCurry · 12/06/2021 14:02

Thank you….
Not on Twitter though
I have a very strong feeling he has moved from shed as I have been in and out so he may have come out when I was not watching
It’s silent in there and I took a photo of the food saucer and it’s not been disturbed since he ate some earlier and he had emerged at that point.
I really hope he’s settled in somewhere cool safe and shady for the day 🤞

Just had the red arrows fly past !! Two surprises in one day !
Blink and you miss them of course

OP posts:
DogsSausages · 12/06/2021 15:39

They flew over Windsor for the Queens birthday, I wonder if they are still based at Bournemouth airport, we often see them fly over when they practice for the airshow but not this year I guess. Greece sounds tempting.

SappysCurry · 12/06/2021 15:43

@DogsSausages
Think it is Farnham ?
But they do ‘park’ up at Bournemouth sometimes don’t they suppose it depends in where they are doing a display

They had some good Greek destinations from there, I had dare not look as had two cancelled last year 🥲

she'l be fine.
great that you put out water and food for her.
good if you have an area in your garden where you put up a shelter (like a wooden fruit crate with an opening and filled with dry straw or wood wool)

DogsSausages · 12/06/2021 15:47

One day soon you will be there enjoying a much deserved holiday, stay safe and good luck with hoggie.🐗🐗🐗

DogsSausages · 12/06/2021 15:48

No idea where those pigs, walrus or whatever they are supposed to be came from

RickJames · 12/06/2021 15:48

Bless you OP!

I keep half of my garden wild just for the animals - I get a lot of toads, red squirrels, shrews, rare insects but no hedgehogs Sad

Hope your hedgehog is feeling better Smile
