Does anyone else play the Wikipedia game just by themselves?

I know it’s a bit tragic but quite often if I want to look something up on Wikipedia I won’t just search for it, I’ll go to the Wikipedia home page and try to find my way to it from there.

Just now for example, watching Teletubbies with DS I was curious about where it was filmed. Found my way to Teletubbies from the home page in impressively few steps!

I know there is an actual Wikipedia game for this but I never find that at much fun.

This sounds hilarious.

DistrictCommissioner · 08/06/2021 11:25

I just looked at the Wikipedia homepage & can’t even imagine how you did it!

Ulysses · 08/06/2021 11:25

I do this! It’s usually to find a celebrity that I’ve seen on TV. I also use IMDb for this too.

Ulysses · 08/06/2021 11:26

The Wikipedia version is more high brow though Grin

legotruck · 08/06/2021 11:26

No. It would frustrate the fuck out of me.

SlipperyDippery · 08/06/2021 11:31

So you don’t type anything into the search box? How is this possible?! I’m impressed!

NerrSnerr · 08/06/2021 11:33

I have just had a go and managed to get from the home page to Stephen Hendry. Took a surprisingly long time from the Scotland page.

To the people asking you've got to click on the links throughout each article and try and find something that might be relevant.

Yep, I do that too Grin

I started at en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

—> Royal Ballet
—> (Repertoire) Cinderella
—> (Works based on the Cinderella Story - English language live-action feature films) Into The Woods
—> James Corden
—> BBC
—> (Services - Television) CBeebies
—> Teletubbies

Boom! Grin

I made it to Teletubbies via English National Ballet, London, Ealing studios, BBC, CBeebies, Teletubbies.

Whatisgoingonhere · 08/06/2021 11:50

I just tried this with ‘dinosaurs’ and made it in five links, so I’m pretty happy with myself!! Grin

EastWellowBride · 08/06/2021 11:52

I haven't tried this but with ds we play a game where we start on an imdb page and go back to find the oldest actor in 5 moves.

AngeloMysterioso · 08/06/2021 11:55

Nice, two fewer steps than me!

We play a variation of this. DH will challenge me to get from, say, Sigmund Freud to the lute in as few moves as possible.

GrimDamnFanjo · 08/06/2021 14:12

Lol I've done this! I thought I was the only one...

DukeOfEarlGrey · 08/06/2021 14:20

Yep. Didn’t know it was a ‘thing’ but glad to learn it’s not just me!

AutistGoth · 08/06/2021 14:30

Never done this, but it sounds fun! I'll have to try it.

Taliskerskye · 08/06/2021 14:55

Omg. This is fun. I got to Andy Warhol In 4

Sherwood studio building (FP)
May Wilson Preston
National portait gallery
david wojnarowicz
Andy Warhol

You should start a game thread op!

Crockof · 08/06/2021 15:10

How did I not know about this

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 15:12

Being stupid here but op when you went to Wikipedia how did you get to your first step (Royal Ballet in your example)?

SionnachRua · 08/06/2021 15:14

I used to play a variety of this when I was in school. Everyone starts on the same randomly select d page, see who get to Hitler with the fewest clicks. Yours sounds more fun, though.

Crockof · 08/06/2021 15:16

Tricky, 9, from home page of boats via Churchill to British Layland to the traditional Mini car

FelicityBeedle · 08/06/2021 15:20

I went for gardens and got it in 3, too generic I think

HeronLanyon · 08/06/2021 15:21

Where do you start ? My wiki home page has hundreds of links, a page of the day, random generator, categories etc etc.
What is step one ?
I can see some first steps would be brilliant but if limited to page of the day probably less so.
