After a rubbish night's sleep last night, I really need a decent fan! Quieter ones preferred I guess but not essential as I can probably sleep though the noise.

We can see this thread is a few years old so some of the suggestions may be out of stock, but we’ve recently updated our best tower fan and best pedestal fan pages with plenty of Mumsnetter-approved recommendations.

We also have guides to the best handheld fan and desk fan too, if you’re wanting something more compact and budget-friendly. We hope they help.

All a fan will do is move hot air around the room. You need a proper, vented air conditioner. Not the ones you put ice in, that’s just a fan blowing over ice. Look for one with a tumble dryer hose that vents out of the window.

It’s not cheap, you’re looking £200/£250 but trust me when I say it’s worth every penny. I bought ours about five years ago and don’t know what I’d have done without it.

I have a high velocity floor fan, its like sleeping in a gale. It was still too warm last night (I should have had window open too).

I don't have £200/ 300 unfortunately. I will have to think of some other solutions

I've had this for a couple of years. Good for summer nights. Good for when I've got hot curlers or straighteners on my hair! Quiet enough to sleep through. 1-12 speed settings. Also a handy room thermometer!

I got this floor fan last year when it was on sale for about £45. www.argos.co.uk/product/8763277?clickPR=plp:28:41

Its very good, but depends how large your room is and how far away the fan will be? A pedestal one will take up less floor space and generally isn't as strong as the more industrial, floor ones. Screwfix, tesco, asda and wilkos also do fans, so worth looking around at the dB level and amount of air it moves per min.

The best non-aircon solution I ever found was a floor fan like the picture hopefully attached with the fan angled straight upwards, so it directly faced the ceiling.

I think what happens is it draws in the cooler air which will be at floor level, because cold air sinks and blows it out, displacing the hotter air above.

It wasn't a magic solution or anything but it seemed to take the edge of the heat of the room a little.

It did take me a night or two to get used to the noise of it.

Decent fan recommendations.

You can also sometimes find air con on Ebay for under 100.
