Are most actresses very very slim in real life?

I saw a well known actress a few days ago, standing behind her in the queue for a coffee. She was dressed down, however was clearly very pretty in person. However I was taken aback by how slim she was. I would say she was slightly taller than average, not a tiny person if you know what I mean. But so so slim. Do you think most famous actresses/singers etc are like this? Maybe I’m very naive.

But I want Hollywood to reflect the range of bodies and people in real life.
I want older and middle-aged women, fat and thin women, disabled women and men, life as it is.
I have zero issues with actresses who are naturally slim, but I do not think it should be the only acceptable female body on screen in a leading woman part.

Kissthepastrychef · 06/06/2021 00:17

The Duchess of Cambridge often puts me in mind of Keira Knightley in Bend it like Beckham.

Serpenta · 06/06/2021 00:20

Hollywood is a world where female romantic leads are always super slim, male romantic leads are often (but not always, far more leeway here!) buff and toned, and where 55 year old leading men never have a leading lady who's over 30.

astonafar · 06/06/2021 00:25

@Serpenta but love stories about other people can be lovely too. There was that play that did really well in the West End about a romance between two people who were not beautiful. Kathy Burke was the woman lead. When it was transferred to film they got a beautiful actress to play it and just had her hair lanky and greasy. It bombed. As the critics said they could not stop thinking she would have easily found someone if she just washed her hair.
We like love stories in soaps that are not always between the most beautiful characters. So why not on film?

Serpenta · 06/06/2021 00:30

Oh I completely agree! Just saying that Hollywood is deeply conservative in its casting of people and stories. Terrified of anything that isn't Matt Damon (50) bedding Jennifer Lawrence (30). And the age gap is never even mentioned in the film!

Serpenta · 06/06/2021 00:33

And I wouldn't be surprised if Jennifer Lawrence, now she's 30, is starting to be overlooked for those roles.

In the First Wives Club there's a quote 'there are three stages for actresses in Hollywood: 'babe', 'district attorney' and 'driving miss daisy'.

Jennifer Lawrence is approaching district attorney now.

Thanks dorangme, nearly sorry I asked, horrific - both the cotton wool and the mesh. Just really sad Sad

Tuckedinbelly · 06/06/2021 01:05

Kate Middleton looks emaciated in photos. Must look minute in real life

lolacola77 · 06/06/2021 01:17

Kate Middleton is seriously underweight. It's actually quite distressing but she made her bed.

In answer to the previous poster, no Jodie Comer is a UK size 12 and I know that due to working with her frequently, not just because a friend of a friend knows her dentist. Although I saw her recently and she's lost weight since the Killing Eve days although she isn't 'teeny tiny'. She's also had too much filler and Botox. Sadly she wants to crack the US and this is the tragic way forward.

NewbieSM · 06/06/2021 01:36

Bloody hell the judgement and sniping on this thread is awful, all dressed up as faux concern for their health. NONE of you have any idea as to why these women look the way they do, are you privy to their personal medical information, diet or workout regimes? The constant speculation and criticism is disgusting and you are all perpetuating the same negative stereotypes that you seem so afraid of.

Let's flip the script shall we, Dawn French and Rebel Wilson are sooo overweight they must be absolutely stuffing their faces with takeaways and junk and sitting on their arses not exercising at all. What a terrible example they are setting for our children. I'm so concerned that my daughters are being exposed to this lazy way of life by women who have a public platform and should be leading by example. They must be so unhealthy and passing on their inferior obese genes to their children which is so irresponsible how can they think their lifestyle is acceptable to the wider public.

See how awful that sounds? Frankly I think you should all take a step back and evaluate why you feel the need to drag other women down in such a bitchy fashion. Sounds to me like some of you could do with a bit of tolerance training and maybe diet and exercise education as apparently eating steamed vegetables and fish is really unhealthy Hmm Bigger bodies don't make you healthier, the fact that we live longer than previous generations is not solely because of the food we eat but rather the medical and technological advances we have made to artificially extend our lives.

Fwiw I'm a natural size 4 5 ft 3 and 7 stone 4 and of Asian descent. My mothers genes are perfectly healthy thank you very much and I could probably out lift and outrun most of you who have their arses glued to the couch drinking wine and eating crisps while daring to judge other people for not looking or living the same you do.

As for how this affects young girls and women, I don't dispute there can be negative effects but it doesn't really seem to be manifesting itself as the child and teen population keeps getting fatter not thinner so from a physical perspective that's not an argument. Emotional and mental well-being is a different kettle of fish.

Why can't we just embrace our differences no one is better than another especially based on how much you weigh.

End rant.

OhWhyNot · 06/06/2021 01:40

There is a huge amount of pressure on actresses/singers to look a certain way some maybe naturally tiny but many will be constantly dieting (Joan Collins said that it became normal to feel hungry). Liz Hurley has spoken about how much she will put herself through to keep very slim

Pamela Anderson was taller than I expected her to be. I thought she was around 5’2 (I’m this height) but she isn’t small in height she is very slim

Marilyn Monroe was tiny (no idea where the ridiculous idea of her being 16 came from even if thinking of 16 size clothes in the past) i have seen her clothes at an exhibition they were around 8-10 some definitely an 8

lolacola77 · 06/06/2021 01:44

@NewbieSM Dawn French and Rebel Wilson and Ashley Graham are all grossly overweight and it does set a bad example.

NewbieSM · 06/06/2021 02:08

@lolacola77 Are they setting a bad example? Or are they just trying to do their jobs and live their lives in the body that they have? Let's be honest female celebrities don't owe us or our daughters shit. Set a good example for your own children and educate them on health and acceptance at all sizes, stop forcing strangers into a role that you should be filling yourselves. The point I was trying to make is that being fat or thin is not a moral judgement. One is not 'better' than the other and a bunch of middle aged women who could probably do with losing a few pounds spouting on about women who MUST have an eating disorder to look the way they do is a dangerous precedent to set.

A lot of these posters I've seen on other threads espousing the virtues of tolerance and acceptance of fat people and anyone who disagrees is body shaming. Which is exactly what this thread is about.

Bunch of disingenuous hypocrites, put the phone and the fork down ladies and go for a bloody run before you start judging other people. Or don't, how you live your life is none of my business and I have no right to judge because I don't have any real insight or skin in the game do I?

FierceBarrie · 06/06/2021 02:33

Why can't we just embrace our differences no one is better than another especially based on how much you weigh.

Except you very obviously do think you’re better than most people on this thread, with your ‘I could out-run and out-lift most of you’, ‘arses glued to the couch’ and ‘put the phone and fork down, ladies’ comments.

This thread is an uncomfortable read, and is not bringing out the best in people. At all.

Susannahmoody · 06/06/2021 02:40

Judgy much?

My god the irony is astounding!

FierceBarrie · 06/06/2021 02:46

My god the irony is astounding!

Total self-awareness bypass, right?!

NewbieSM · 06/06/2021 02:52

@FierceBarrie well you've completely missed my point Confused. Me being able and willing to do exercise or eat 'healthily' does NOT make me better than anyone else who does differently. I'm simply trying to get posters to recognise that everyone sets their own preferred lifestyle and no one has the right to judge someone else for it as it doesn't affect them at all. Hence why I stated it was none of my business to judge other on their activities.

I'm giving as good as others are on this thread, people speculating on what celebrities eat or how much they exercise and how they are setting a bad example but the if people self reflect they are doing the exact same thing by doing the complete opposite. No one is perfect we can all only do our best and that should be good enough regardless of whether it's the same as someone else.

My previous statements were designed to be controversial and patronising because THATS WHAT ALL THE OTHER COMMENTS ARE LIKE. It wasn't nice what I said was it? So why is it ok to say similar statements to other women who aren't even here to defend themselves? I'm pointing out the ironies in this thread but clearly that's gone straight over your head.

Calm down, dear. Not ALL THE OTHER COMMENTS. Not mine, for a start.

And as I said, this thread is uncomfortable reading, and is really not bringing out the best in people.

Maybe put the phone down, take a deep breath, and step outside for some fresh air?

Serpenta · 06/06/2021 04:23

'End rant.'

Reader, it wasn't the end of her rant. She continued to rant for many more paragraphs.

Whilst being, would you believe it, 45 ft 3 and 7 stone 4.

Serpenta · 06/06/2021 04:37

the nonsense some people come out with. Giving people a good dressing down, combined with 'I'm so slim and you're a chonk' which they then revise to 'oh but you're completely missing my point'

Your point is to be bitchy on a Saturday night after a few gin and tonics.

'I could probably out lift and outrun most of you who have their arses glued to the couch drinking wine and eating crisps while daring to judge other people for not looking or living the same you do.'

'Bunch of disingenuous hypocrites, put the phone and the fork down ladies and go for a bloody run before you start judging other people.'

Someone's a bit drunk and aggro.

Sad really.

spittycup · 06/06/2021 05:02
@SweatyPie

Why on earth is it not appropriate to have an opinion & discussion about why certain industries pressure women to look a certain way?

So I shouldn't talk about other models I know eating cotton wool or being told I should lose weight when I was already very slim because you don't like it? Jog on!
Because comments comparing thin women to children are just offensive and not a discussion.

Also aren't you the one who suggested others are self loathing? Some conversation. Offending naturally thin/fit women with body shaming to get a point across comes off as exactly that @dorangme Smile

spittycup · 06/06/2021 05:08

@Timetopoeet

ZednotZee

@Timetopoeet

You are hardly emaciated at that weight to height ratio. I don't think anybody is referring to you.

Sadly I suspect I am. I've had some awful things said to me, people telling me I look like a bag of bones, an ironing board, that I must be anorexic. I'm just a normal person who doesn't change weight and who dearly wishes she weighed a stone more.

According to most posters here, this is ok to say. Body related threads are best avoided- most won't see an issue with this

KatherineJaneway · 06/06/2021 05:59

Dawn French and Rebel Wilson and Ashley Graham are all grossly overweight

I suggest you Google recent photos of Rebel Wilson.

3Britnee · 06/06/2021 06:06
@NewbieSM Dawn French and Rebel Wilson and Ashley Graham are all grossly overweight and it does set a bad example.
Rebel Wilson isn't fat anymore.

3Britnee · 06/06/2021 06:11

A US size 0 is equivalent to an 8 or 10 year old child though. I forget which exactly but it is equivalent to a child's size. Why is it wrong to say that?
