Are most actresses very very slim in real life?

Mitford1789 · 04/06/2021 22:38

I saw a well known actress a few days ago, standing behind her in the queue for a coffee. She was dressed down, however was clearly very pretty in person. However I was taken aback by how slim she was. I would say she was slightly taller than average, not a tiny person if you know what I mean. But so so slim. Do you think most famous actresses/singers etc are like this? Maybe I’m very naive.

@3Britnee Well using your logic, comparing a fat celebrity to sumo wrestler would be acceptable yes?

No it wouldn't, because both statements are designed to illicit a certain negative response.

3Britnee · 06/06/2021 06:27

If they WERE the size of a sumo wrestler, then yes. What is wrong with stating facts?

Onlinedilema · 06/06/2021 06:31

In answer to the ops question. Yes most of them are tiny in every way. When dd was auditioning for roles she was told she was too tall at 5 feet 7.
Most of the parts went to women no taller than 5 foot 2 and very childlike pre pubescent looking. Tiny frames, extremely thin straight up and down androgynous looking.

Pedallleur · 06/06/2021 07:30

Camera adds maybe 3 or 4 kilos but remember that these days it's a competition to stay thin, young etc and avoid the social media backlash and to be able to compete for work.

And what is your problem with that? Do you consider their bodies inferior to your DDs and less worthy of the part? Maybe they were better actors than her or did a better audition on the day - did you consider that before you rushed to judged their bodies.
dorangme · 06/06/2021 07:38

Because comments comparing thin women to children are just offensive and not a discussion.

But a 24" waist is the waistband size of a 10 yr girl. Isn't that what people are referring too.

Also aren't you the one who suggested others are self loathing? Some conversation. Offending naturally thin/fit women with body shaming to get a point across comes off as exactly that*

No I asked the question is it self loathing? Because I genuinely don't understand why a conversation about why women have to be very thin is met with "but lots of people are fat". Where have I body-shamed anyone?

dorangme · 06/06/2021 07:41

So many female celebrities have spoken out about that pressure but apparently they are wrong too because some people are naturally very slim 🤔

NutellaEllaElla · 06/06/2021 07:44

@HeadNorth it appears the poster is just remarking on the industry that judged her DDs body as inferior for being tall Confused

In general tall people get paid and promoted more and do better in interviews (google it). As a short arse it is rather cheering to think their may be times it is a positive to be wee.

dorangme · 06/06/2021 07:48

Fwiw I'm a natural size 4 5 ft 3 and 7 stone 4 and of Asian descent. My mothers genes are perfectly healthy thank you very much and I could probably out lift and outrun most of you who have their arses glued to the couch drinking wine and eating crisps while daring to judge other people for not looking or living the same you do.

This is what I'm talking about! It's ridiculous

The point I was trying to make is that being fat or thin is not a moral judgement. One is not 'better' than the other and a bunch of middle aged women who could probably do with losing a few pounds spouting on about women who MUST have an eating disorder to look the way they do is a dangerous precedent to set.

This is intentionally ironic I assume?

cheezy · 06/06/2021 07:57

Surely Kate Middleton would not have been able to carry three babies to term if she was so ‘scarily underweight’? She’s obviously very fit and muscular. She looks healthy to me.

NutellaEllaElla · 06/06/2021 07:58

That's funny because I thought you just said that it's not acceptable to judge women's bodies as inferior based on their height and it should be about who did a better audition?

As long as we're clear then, it's fine by you that the industry discriminates against 'tall' women for having proportionate bodies. Hypocrite.

Nope, I was making the point that the poster leaped to assume her DD didn't get the job as she was tall. As a shortarse, I know that being tall is usually favoured over being short, so on a personal level obviously it is nice for me to think people who look like me are being favoured for once. But the point remains that we have no idea why her DD failed the audition so it is a massive leap to blame it on her height.

According to the NHS BMI calculator you are underweight (and there are health risks associated with that, which I'm sure you know)

You are an 'outlier', very few women are as underweight as you are yet according to knowledgeable people on this thread you would have to lose a further 10 pounds to be thin enough to glow on camera Confused

I mean that's just a terrifying thought right ?

coogee · 06/06/2021 08:07

A US size 0 is equivalent to an 8 or 10 year old child though. I forget which exactly but it is equivalent to a child's size. Why is it wrong to say that?

I have some US size 0 clothes in my wardrobe along some UK 10s. There's even some children's clothes in there too. I just buy what fits me without getting hung up on the numbers on the labels, or what other people think of the numbers on the labels.

But a 24" waist is the waistband size of a 10 yr girl.

Based on my experience as a full grown woman who has occasionally bought clothes the children's dept. The clothes may have the same waistband size, but that is where it ends. The proportions are different from adult clothes. The sleeves are shorter, as is the body length, the head holes are smaller and there is no provision made for boobs.

Dragonn · 06/06/2021 08:07

I agree there is an issue. Not just with weight, but also with surgery to look younger, but people are suggesting being short and slim makes women look like children and it comes across as if this is unnatural and inferior. Women who are short and slim is a valid body type for a women. There appears to be a higher occurance of them in acting, where as taller people are found in senior corporate roles.

I'm also not convinced the camera adds 10 pounds automatically. I can see how posing in different ways can certainly make people look bigger or smaller. I dont look bigger in photos. Does this rule only apply to adults? Adult human females? My DD doesn't look like she has gained a quarter of her body weight. My cat doesn't look doubled in size. Victims of famine and the holocaust were really 10 pounds smaller in real life? People are using this fact to

' prove' photos of healthy females are proof they are very under weight.

Just feels like many people are being disingenerous which doesn't help the cause.

OutComeTheWolves · 06/06/2021 08:09

If anyone has read the Lily Allen biography, she details there the pressure to be slim including a treatment where they basically put you to sleep for a few days before a big event so you don't eat!

sadperson16 · 06/06/2021 08:12

Do we see on a daily basis the full range of body sizes and shapes represented in the media?

No

Then there is a problem here.

Imagine if the cast of Friends had reappeared as a size 12 /14 (GASP) with a bit of post menopausal excess. No chance.

HeadNorth · 06/06/2021 08:13

Women who are short and slim is a valid body type for a women.

Thank you. It does not mean you are androgynous or look like a child - that is a very western-centric, narrow lens to view women's bodies through. Women come in all shapes and sizes and there is absolutely nothing wrong, or childlike, in being small. We've been called 'munchkins' on this thread, for goodness sake - how disrespectful is that?

KingdomScrolls · 06/06/2021 08:14

DH worked in film and TV for about a decade, he said working with a lot of film actors was great as they'd demand all these things for catering but then barely eat so there was loads extra for crew.... To be fair he was very slim then himself, he's 6'4 and weighed under eleven stone when we got together you could see his ribs at all times front and back, he ate like a horse but that industry seems to exist on cigarettes, caffeine and little sleep and cocaine, DH is very anti drugs but most aren't . He is now around 12-12.5 stone and a 30 waist, quit smoking not looking after he changed careers. Looks much healthier for it.

@LaurieFairyCake

One of the (many) problems with BMI calculation is that it's based on Caucasian data.

Often people from non-white ethnicities will weigh in as significantly under or over weight despite being perfectly healthy due to differences in skeletal mass and musculature.

It's worth being aware that a lot of medical data does not account for perfectly normal ethnic variation before judging other posters according to Caucasian norms

Dragonn · 06/06/2021 08:15

@Serpenta

I think bodybuilders avoid any liquids before competitions as the dehydration better showcases muscle definition. I presume it's the same with these models.
My old personal trainer said before a competition they would avoid water and drink lots of whiskey to further dehydrate, so that their muscle definition was apparent!

The NHS BMI calculator asks for your sex, age and ethnicity as it makes a difference as to where you sit in terms of healthy/unhealthy BMI.
