How long do the effects last?

Poor DD has been chewing sugar free gum and it has had a disastrous effect on her insides. Wondering how long until things will stabilise, she doesn't want to miss school tomorrow... I can find a million internet stories of doom but none with much info on timescales Grin

Yup, made that mistake when I did Weight Watchers with their old sugar free chewy sweets. Never again. Seem to recall it lasted a day or two.

TinySongstress · 23/05/2021 21:28

Oh my word, Aldi does these 'sugar free' sweets in little boxes at the till.
They're lovely but I've never had the explosive Armageddon I have with those before or since. I was like a buggered old Mondeo popping and farting around the place.
Shocking.

Fieldings15 · 23/05/2021 21:28

Yep me Confused was fine the next day though. Only actually ate 3! Mind you with sugar free gum she can't have consumed much unless she actually swallowed it. Hope she feels better soon!

Theunamedcat · 23/05/2021 21:29

24/36 hours as long as you stop taking it

Is she old enough for imodium?

Muuuuuuuum · 23/05/2021 21:31

Oh dear, poor DD.

I feel terrible for not checking what she was eating more carefully too.

The reviews for these sugar free sweets are graphic, but entertaining!

Hope your poor DD feels better soon

Twitchynose · 23/05/2021 21:40

Oh I give up !
Just search for Astra sugar free bears on Amazon and read the reviews!

Yes! Twice I got some lovely hard toffee type sweets (Asda own brand) and as they were sugar free I ate the whole pack. A couple of hours later.... It lasted a few hours (I didn't realise at first the connection) . 2) I used to teach evening classes twice a week and would always have v bad tummy after - again couldn't work out why until I read the warning on the sugar free polos!!
DotBall · 23/05/2021 21:42

OMG yes, Aldi sugar free Sweet Liquorice.
I was having one if I woke up at night coughing as a soother but dear god two nights of the malitol and I was gone.

Muuuuuuuum · 23/05/2021 21:44

Thanks all, for the info and sympathy.

I've been very entertained by the internet reviews and reports of similar experiences but DD is definitely not at the looking back with a smile stage just yet!

She hasn't had any gum since about 4pm but over the day she chewed 12 pieces - no idea how much that means she actually consumed of the dodgy ingredients but not looking good for school tomorrow atm.

Did it once and never again. It was like I was weeing out of my bum!

Muuuuuuuum · 23/05/2021 21:45

Oh, a few hours gives me hope. Maybe things will settle down overnight.

Oh bless her but this chuckled me remembering an incident with sugar free polo's at my grandmas house when I was maybe 8? Sure it didn't last through till the next day though. Maybe just a 12ish hour effect!

Robinkitty · 23/05/2021 21:53

Funnily enough I ate lots of sugar free worthers originals on Friday night and have spent the weekend with various states of stomach ache. Currently on the nausea and a very strange grumbling under my ribs. Unpleasant and won’t be doing it again.

Champagneforeveryone · 23/05/2021 21:53

DS never had sweets as a toddler (I was that mother Hmm) until we flew on holiday. I purchased a couple of Chupa Chups sugar free lollies for the journey, one for the landing and one as a bribe for good behaviour.

Fortunately we weren't in the hire car when the explosion hit, but there were a pair of shorts and a T-shirt that never recovered. I was also devoutly glad he was wearing flip flops Envy

As far as I remember the aftermath was mercifully short lived, but I have blanked a large amount of this event from my memory.

Honeyroar · 23/05/2021 21:58

I’ve done it a couple of times. Not touched sugar free sweets for years. I’d rather be fat!

Chwaraeteg · 23/05/2021 22:08

Grin yes. 3 days it lasted! The diarrhea went after a day and a half but my stomach was still making these fecking weird drainpipe noises for 3 entire days! It was like nothing I have ever experienced before.

It was the sherbert lemon sweets from either Aldi or Lidl in my case ( they contained malitol - I ate half a packet). I genuinely think they should come with a big fat health warning on the front.

Puttingouthefirewithgasoline · 23/05/2021 22:18

Oh god, sugar free polo's! I unwittingly had some before meeting a friend at ikea and myself god, pain, wind, trapped, released I couldn't concentrate on anything.

Fallsballs · 23/05/2021 22:26

Oh dear god that reminds me of the day I ate a packet of Aldi sugar free sweets, innocent looking things. My poor arse sounded like a machine gun for a day and I was wrecked with cramps and exhaustion after all the farting.

BillyAndTheSillies · 23/05/2021 22:45

The last time I got hit with this, the bloating lasted three or four days. I felt horrendous!!! I should have known that sugar free candy floss was a bad idea. Even worse idea when the tub had no listed ingredients.

HerBigChance · 23/05/2021 22:48

Sorbitol is one of the ingredients, I think. Appalling results.

Same happened to my very prim and proper colleague with the aldi sweets! She was at work when they started to take effect. She shit herself and had to go home 😂 She was mortified.
Holothane · 23/05/2021 22:57

This is horrific you poor lot remind me never eat sugar free stuff like this, I’ve had 3 days of seeing out of bum as another poster calls it, so I don’t want another bout, mines been a virus.

Letsgetreadytocrumble · 23/05/2021 22:57

I cant eat more than one Smint a day otherwise its arse armageddon for me.
