How long do the effects last?

Poor DD has been chewing sugar free gum and it has had a disastrous effect on her insides. Wondering how long until things will stabilise, she doesn't want to miss school tomorrow... I can find a million internet stories of doom but none with much info on timescales Grin

OP posts:

Dd discoverer this when she had a thing for sugar free polos. Really upset tummy for a few days. Then it was sugar free Chupa Chups. Never again.

Cherrysoup · 23/05/2021 23:11

Oh my word, Aldi does these 'sugar free' sweets in little boxes at the till.

Oh my god, been there, done that, it was horrific, wind, pain, noise, awful! Never again!

EastWestWhosBest · 23/05/2021 23:14

I ate a bag of sugar free gummy bear type sweets.

One explosive shit but I was fine afterwards.

Grizalda · 23/05/2021 23:15

Lol, I ate a bag full of those sugar free worms once and they went straight through me Grin
I wondered at the time but, to be honest, I've always had a shocking digestive system so I thought it was probably just me.
I'm quite glad to hear it's a thing, I'll steer clear of anything SF in fur

Grizalda · 23/05/2021 23:15

*future Hmm

GuyFawkesDay · 23/05/2021 23:17

Sugar free polos were always known as shit mints in our family 😆

whatsthestory123 · 23/05/2021 23:17

yep tesco sherbet sweets but it was the sound of my stomach it was horrendous

Keepyourdistance000 · 23/05/2021 23:20

Yes, DH Grin he never learns.

Thelnebriati · 23/05/2021 23:29

It took me 24 hours to recover.
'Trust no fart' should be on the packet imo.

QuestionableMouse · 23/05/2021 23:34

I bought some jelly beans from the sweet stall in the indoor Market. Had maybe five or six while watching a movie and started getting horrible stomach cramps. I lost two or three pounds and spent probably 48 hours not daring to venture too far from a loo.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/05/2021 23:37

Sorbitol is one of the ingredients, I think. Appalling results.

To be fair, it's a completely Ronseal name, if (for whatever mad reason) it's a 'sore butthole' you're after!

mammmamia · 23/05/2021 23:37

Shock I am really grateful to the OP for starting this thread and hope your DD feels better soon - I honestly had no idea about this.
Going to be keeping a close eye on the sweets DC choose with their pocket money from now on.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/05/2021 23:41

I remember when I was a kid, about a thousand years ago, they had these joke catalogues (Match-Rite, was it?), where you could send off for all manner of illusions, tricks, jokes, pranks and similar; and one of their main lines was 'fart sweets'.

I can only assume that, once the market for mail order gags disappeared, they moved into the diet sweets angle and kept the recipe exactly the same!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 23/05/2021 23:44

Oh my word, Aldi does these 'sugar free' sweets in little boxes at the till.

Don't they specifically advertise that "You'll find nothing naughty here next to the till" or something like that? Any Trading Standards officers around?!

Misseasteregg · 24/05/2021 00:01

Omg those Amazon reviews are hilarious

ssd · 24/05/2021 00:03

Ive never heard noises like my stomach made after eating these

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 24/05/2021 00:15

I have actually never had this problem and regularly consume sugar free gum, sweets, etc. Maybe I've just got used to them over time?

True story - a friend worked for a large sweet manufacture in their customer service department. She had a customer eat an entire pack of the sugar free sweets who ended up shitting herself on the tube. Then she contacted the company to complain of the side effect and insisted that they pay for the dry cleaning of her skirt! Confused

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 24/05/2021 00:47

Where I live those kind of sweets now carry a warning on the paket (like cigarettes).

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/05/2021 00:53

Howling at those reviews @Twitchynose - thank you

MiddleClassMother · 24/05/2021 00:59

Yes, on a very long car ride when I was trying to lose a few pounds after Christmas, my stomach didn't settle properly for a few days but the worst of it was over by the evening. Ruined my family visit though...

GrainOfSalt · 24/05/2021 02:25

Yes. When I was 10. Sugar free mints. Never did it again. Flashbacks to the railway station loo. Thanks OP lol.

DanaScully53 · 24/05/2021 06:44

I don't have the sweets, but I buy Stute diabetic jam which does exactly the same to me. If I eat too much at once I sound and smell like a blocked sewer 😳

Northernsoullover · 24/05/2021 06:51

I ate a packet of sugar free polos when I was little. My nan bought them for me and let me munch through the entire packet. She was sorry Grin

IDontWantToAdultToday · 24/05/2021 07:32

Yes, I took a pack of my moms weight watchers sweets to school one day. I'd spent my bus fair and was planning on walking the 45 min walk home, come lunchtime and I had horrendous pains in my stomach and wouldnt dare poo at school. I had to stop every few steps whilst walking home to wait for the next poo contraction to pass. Awful pain, i recall and trail of my clothes along the landing, coat, trousers etc that I'd stripped off in my haste to get to the toilet once I got home...I've never eaten sugar free sweets again!
