How long do the effects last?

Poor DD has been chewing sugar free gum and it has had a disastrous effect on her insides. Wondering how long until things will stabilise, she doesn't want to miss school tomorrow... I can find a million internet stories of doom but none with much info on timescales Grin

As a diabetic I have always avoided them. Now you know why. Vile stuff. Sorry OP. Grin

Too often. I have type 1 diabetes and people like to give me sugar free stuff. I feel bad saying no when they bought the sugar free tart just for me to eat during a party so I just eat it.

A few tips:

  1. Check that someone actually wants the sugar free treat (I'd rather use more insulin and eat the cake or go without).
  2. Check that they like the treat you want to buy (sugar free marzipan is truly awful).
  3. TELL THEM that it is sugar free before they dose their insulin thinking it is normal cake.

I once ate so many sugar free Polos because the sugar ones made my teeth ache (not thinking to just eat less) and I was so ill for about two days. I know it is no comfort but my DF always used to say "better out than in". I hope she is soon well.

An acquaintance of mine put bowls of sugar free sweets on every table at her wedding. Her OH wanted the bowls of sweets there but she was concerned about her diabetic nephew eating them when his parents weren't looking so bought all sugar free sweets. Unfortunately none of the guests, other than parents of the nephew, were warned. The toilet situation was apparently....interesting

Yes, on a very long car ride when I was trying to lose a few pounds after Christmas

They promote them as weight-loss aids, but they really need to make it clear that the weight you lose won't be in the form of slowly dissipating bodily fat reserves but rather in sloppy jobbies that simply explode with no notice at all.

I think it should actually be made illegal to market such powerful, evil things as 'suitable for diabetics' - or, worse, just as 'diabetic' sweets/chocolates, as if the confectionery itself has a medical condition. People with diabetes know to steer well clear of these nasty things, but their well-meaning family and friends often don't. As a PP said, they'll buy them for you out of genuine (albeit very misguided) kindness and then get upset if you don't want to eat them and then dash straight to the toilet.

Companies that trade on the misery of people with a life-threatening health condition are as disgusting as their sweets. I can't imagine anybody getting away with labelling things as 'suitable for vegans' or 'kosher' if the very process they used to make the food suitable for these requirements involved replacing the disallowed components with powerful laxatives, without making it abundantly clear.

I actually think it's bordering on corporate-level disability hate crime. What on earth would possess you to think that people with diabetes not only want to regulate their sugar intake but that they also want to crap their pants with no warning?

I was like a buggered old Mondeo popping and farting around the place.

Was chortling at the mental image wih this one.

Dad is diabetic, and warned me a long time ago not to overdo sugarfree sweets.

MerryChristmasToYou · 24/05/2021 18:00

Now I know what to get everyone for Christmas.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 24/05/2021 20:00

It's not really even overdoing, though: just one or two sweets can be enough to get your insides violently churning through. It wouldn't be so bad if they were like alcohol, where a normal sensible amount is fine but a massive binge will give you problems; but 2 or 3 sweets isn't an unusual 'portion' in any way, and will often be enough to buy you a one-way ticket for a mystery tour to Angrybowelsville.

Now I know what to get everyone for Christmas.

I can hear Mariah in my head now:

All I want for Christmas is..... poooooooooooo!!!

MerryChristmasToYou · 27/05/2021 17:45

Poolar Bears

romdowa · 27/05/2021 17:53

OverByYer · 27/05/2021 17:55

Igmum · 27/05/2021 18:00

Yes, yes me too. It does stop. Eventually

onemouseplace · 27/05/2021 18:00

@Thelnebriati

It took me 24 hours to recover. 'Trust no fart' should be on the packet imo.

Oh yes, I remember doing Atkins back in the early 00s and discovering that diabetic chocolate from the chemist was kind of allowed.

Did not make that mistake again!

MerryChristmasToYou · 27/05/2021 18:17

I remember eating 3 sugar free mints on an empty stomach.
Let's just say they went straight through.

Deathraystare · 28/05/2021 07:53

I was like a buggered old Mondeo popping and farting around the place.

Ah yes, that Sorbital feeling! Even when I didn't shit I farted like a trooper!

Bored1000 · 11/09/2023 16:06

Ate a box of Aldi sugar free sweets, the results lasted about 3hrs but no pain and I felt fine afterwards….I looked at it as a good clean out

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/09/2023 03:10

Nowadays, a lot of doctors cut out the sugar-free sweets middleman and just merrily prescribe Metformin (aka Get Stormin') to anybody with diabetes who is at all overweight - usually without even bothering to mention to the patient the little issue that they will be effectively chained to the home/toilet all day when taking them.

Pointless things, really: I presume their real design is to make you terrified to eat anything at all, so you don't ever actually need them and their evil powers to turn it all straight into explosive turds that force their way out immediately, no matter where you are or what you're doing.
