Don't get ballet pumps.

I lost count of the number of badly sprained ankles I dealt with due to wearing crappy slippy shoes that don't stay on within the first two months of getting my first aid certificate. And falls down the stairs at changeover times.

Most who have learned from experiencing or witnessing Year 7 injuries wear lace up shoes - brogues, Oxfords, DMs (buy 5 x 3 inch wound dressings beforehand as the blisters can be brutal until they're broken in), a few Kickers. The few that don't, wear shoes with secure straps. They usually get lace ups the moment that pair wears out or is grown out of.

Also get proper sports trainers, not cheap fashion ones or expensive fashion ones that don't flex. She'll need the support - and if her ankle tends to drop or lean to the side, especially inwards, invest in some arch support insoles, as it's the other way most kids injure themselves during PE.

I guess all schools differ. I've been told by 1 mum that they can wear trainers but they must be all black. I'm hoping she will have a transition day but she has SEN so I'm not sure she will remember what she's told.

This information should be conveyed to you by school anyway.

Nameisjustaname · 20/05/2021 20:15

No trainers allowed here. Everyone (boys and girls) wear black leather (fake) wallabies!

Do they or do the expect the kids to pass on information?

I don't like Ballet Pumps for kids. I wear them and they hurt my feet and I don't walk about most of the day.

Our high school does an evening or 2 for the parents & kids before the summer holidays where they cover all the expectations etc and that includes uniform. Last year they emails the information be sue school was closed

@MazDazzle

I’m a teacher at a secondary school. I’ve been asked this question so many times! I have been spying on all the footwear trends. On our area it’s Nike air 270s and converse. Vans are also acceptable. As are Airforce 1s. I’m sure it varies from area to area though. Hardly anyone wears shoes here.
They're allowed to wear Vans etc at school??

I don't know where you are (obviously), but I'm pretty sure that's area specific.
I'm in London and while I can't speak for all schools, the ones I know wouldn't allow any of those.

UCOinSteveArnottsPants · 21/05/2021 09:51

No schools in my area would allow anything that remotely resembled Vans, Kickers, Nike Air or the like. They have to be polishable and plain with no logos at all. I’m surprised so many do tbh.

tywysoges · 21/05/2021 10:45

The word “shoes” isn’t even mentioned in DD’s school uniform policy. It’s footwear, and needs to be plain black and low heeled, so pretty much anything goes - though it does say backless shoes and flip flops are not acceptable Grin. I do think their uniform policy is pretty relaxed from what I’ve seen here.

Idontwant2 · 21/05/2021 10:47

Plain black trainers at my child’s secondary.

They wear a mixture of Nike, Adidas, converse, vans etc aslong as all the logo’s or other markings are black also. Few wear actual shoes but our school website has pictures of what is & isn’t acceptable.

You should be able to get an idea from the uniform section of their website

RevolvingPivot · 21/05/2021 13:21

I've just had another look. The website says;

Plain black footwear (no white stripes, or edging)

DMs forever. My DD has had hers for three years, they honestly look as good as new and seem to be miraculously stretching with her feet.

They're pricey up front but worth every penny. Lots of other girls in DDs school seem to wear them, DD is very conscious of 'fitting in' (I know, I know...) and seems quite happy.

I like that they're not going to fall off her feet if she runs for a bus and her feet will stay dry in the rain. (The rest of her will be soaked because she refuses to wear a coat, but at least her fucking FEET will be dry…)

Brilliant shoes.

cronk23 · 21/05/2021 13:35

Mine wear black leather converse along with 99% of the school. They are expensive for what they are but do last well.

My dd has size 9, v wide feet and has to wear whatever we can find which fits the school rules (no boots, no trainers, no ballet style shoes, plain black with no decoration or adornments). It's a bloody struggle and she usually ends up with men's shoes tbh.

9 is big is she tall? Mines a 5.

ShowOfHands · 21/05/2021 16:48

She's around 5ft 6" so not particularly tall.

AfternoonToffee · 21/05/2021 18:09

My DD wears brogues as do most of her friends. Her current pair are Clarks but that is because I had to do a like for like upsize during lockdown, so I went with what I knew fitted.

She has funny feet and has never been able to walk in anything that is too low at the front.

Zhx3 · 21/05/2021 18:20

After years of arguing with dd, who wanted thin-soled ballet pumps like her peers, she finally agreed with me in Y8 and is now wearing DM Chelsea boots. Long lasting and practical.

Were those the £150 ones?

No, they were from the children's section in a DM store, size 5 which I think is as big as they go. Definitely less than £100, probably closer to £50-60? It was a good few years ago now.

The zip broke last year, but we just had it replaced rather than buy a new pair.

RevolvingPivot · 21/05/2021 18:43

My dd is a 5. I couldn't see these in the kids section.
