One project a day- 2nd thread!

BlueLobelia · 19/05/2021 19:01

Welcome to everyone, old hats, lurkers and newbies.

This is a thread where we try and achieve something, no matter how small, a day.

This was the preamble to the previous thread ;

''......many years ago when i was first on MN I started (or maybe just actively participated in, cannot quite recall) a one (house) project a day. It made the most profound difference to my home. The project could be time consuming or not. It could take seconds, minutes or hours. I recall things like changing the lightbulb and lampshade in a hallway table lamp for example as a single day project. One day i also threw away holey and raggedy cushion covers and bought news ones. Little things, that really mattered.

If anyone is interested I wish to start another thread.

Today, as my one project a day, I cleared out my dehydrated and weed-ridden window boxes (2 of them). I put new compost in them and planted them with lobelia (obviously!); red geraniums and some dianthus. I am happy looking out (and in!) my front windows now. :) ''

everyone welcome!

Feel really poorly today, after second jab yesterday, so today only put on a load of washing and hung it out, pricked out more plants, watered all the plants on patio/greenhouse /polytunnel / cold frames and lit the woodburner.

And posted online. 😂
Lots of resting in bed/on sofa, crochet, tv and sleeping done

2020nymph · 26/05/2021 23:33

Crazy busy day at work. Booked an activity for DS1 for half term and that's it.

@2020nymph
Thank you!
Feeling better, but v tired despite doing very little today.
Hopefully tomorrow I will feel more lively!

DownUdderer · 27/05/2021 07:00

Scrubbed two more steps.

CharityDingle · 27/05/2021 10:52

Own room is the project today, thorough vacuuming and dusting. I have started in the last day or two to jot down a very rough timetable for the day.

It's not perfect, I don't stick rigidly to it, but it helps me. I build in time for meals and walks as well as whatever my project of the day is.

cheeseychovolate · 27/05/2021 11:06

Today I'm disposing of lots of empty cardboard boxes and setting up new microwave for in law's

SingToTheSky · 27/05/2021 11:11

Main project today is Get DS Referred To CAMHS 🤣 we are at the final hurdle now, filling in the form with the liaison worker at 12 so he can hopefully finally see a psychiatrist. I’ve had a very slow morning and haven’t done any housework - pushed myself a bit too far with the decluttering yesterday so I’m tired and achy.

If the new mini shelves arrive today I guess we will try and move stuff around upstairs but otherwise I will try and force myself to actually rest properly

Peridot1 · 27/05/2021 11:25

Cleaners are in today so I’ve done a general quick tidy around. Emptied all the bins upstairs.

Have to go for a PCR test this afternoon.

Today’s ‘extra’ task will be tackling my paperwork pile. And we need to measure the garden. Having some work done and apparently the architect’s original plans don’t match up somehow. Measurements needed to see where the issues are.

And I need to get on top of washing for going away next week so I can pack.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 27/05/2021 11:32

My only project today is to make a list of all things I need to do before DH comes home on Sunday. It is going to be a very, very long list. 😕

mamakoukla · 27/05/2021 12:50

Today I will complete some emails that need done, and will look a bit more into buying paint for the bathroom. I’ve figured out I can do click and collect (small independent shop not part of a larger hardware store), so will browse through the online offerings and then call to see whether they will do paint chips that way. If not, bathroom walls aren’t too extensive and can always be repainted…. I guess this could be fun!

Devlesko · 27/05/2021 16:30

I've answered so many messages and emails today, had a little cry at the sheer fright and frustration from some of the messages.
Have been campaigning and educating. It's so soul destroying but I feel it's something I need to do.

Just put some pork and onion in a pan and stewing this for tea with some lovely veg, a sort of pork steak stew. Not very adventatious but can only do so much for dh, and can't be bothered doing 2 teas.

Busy day at work and relieved to come home to a peaceful uncluttered house. I never thought I'd be able to say that! It's taken me years!
I'm a bit weary but in deference to this thread I'm going to stick the shepherd's pie in to reheat then sweep the patio.
Where do you gardening types go online for plants, please. It seems I'm incapable of nipping in to the garden centre Blush

Hey, I hope you are going to stay on here even though you've decluttered. Grin I bet it was lovely coming in. Sorry, I don't know about online plants. We just get our local nursery to deliver as far cheaper than the garden centres. You've reminded, I need to order some honesty seeds, remember them from childhood, and spurred on by another thread.
BlueLobelia · 27/05/2021 17:14

Hi all.

I took the pets for their vaccinations today so that was the main (and most expensive!) project.

I get my plants from B&Q mostly. We have an independent garden centre nearish to us but every time I have gone in they have been rude and curt so I use B&Q.

I am also on a plant swap facebook page. Many keen gardeners and I have swapped things like cosmos seedlings for sweet peas and things like that.

Haven’t quite managed to do get around to my set tasks for today as I got distracted at the shop today when I went to pick up some garlic for the curry tonight and wandered into the outside section where I picked up four plants Blush can’t resist impulse plant purchases! Three different types of basil plus I have some Genoese basil on the go. Look quite pretty together in a terracotta pot. Part of it is I know I have empty pots….

The stew sounds lovely Devlesko. Something comforting about dinner slowly cooking on the stove, wafting good cooking smells. And the shepherds pie too Fnib!

I have started to collect seeds from the current plants if they bear seeds and do offer them out to friends. Must look up honesty seeds.

Sparklynewname · 27/05/2021 21:51

We have emptied the bookcase and moved it out. Stripped the wallpaper from behind it. Room is almost completely stripped now.
Took DS for another drive. He’s getting on reasonably well now so may soon be ready to go on a drive on quiet roads.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 27/05/2021 22:29

I found a giant wolf spider in the house last night so project number one today is spider proofing. I hate spiders but DH wasn’t around to kill it for me (although he usually just moves them outside) so I had to do it all by myself. And we have very playful cats so I couldn’t just stick a glass over it and ignore it until morning. So, yeah, today’s list:

Spider stuff
Clean the litter tray
Clean the downstairs bathroom
2 loads of laundry
Tidy up the pile of crap on the dining table
Mop downstairs floor
Water and fertilise houseplants
Squeeze in 4 hours of work
Help friend with some form filling in that she needs to do
Start (finish?) sewing project
Put book case together

Ok, that is a long one. That is for today and tomorrow. And probably Sunday as well.

SingToTheSky · 27/05/2021 22:46

Current main project mostly done today! Desk is in our room, and DS’ room rearranged a bit with new mini display shelves that he’s very happy with. Got tons of tidying and decluttering done in the process too as I had to clear space in our room.

Not expecting progress tomorrow as I have a ton of calls and appointments. Might try and actually set the computer up though!

mathanxiety · 28/05/2021 03:31

Potted several plants I bought.

Sorted clothes into to keep and donate piles, bagged the donate pile, dropped off to thrift shop.

Dug out the litter box. Cat not impressed.

DownUdderer · 28/05/2021 04:38

I've wiped down a book case, I'll wipe the books tomorrow and replace them. It was very dusty.

Fnib · 28/05/2021 06:50

Good vibes for everyone for getting their things done today. I got patio swept and some weeding done.
I don't know if anyone has heard of www.becomingminimalist.com but I have found his articles useful and inspiring over the last few years. Thought I'd share in case anyone else finds him helpful.
I'm off to take some books to a local charity bookshop later. I came across a phone booth library the other day and I'm planning to reduce the number of books I own and use that, plus start using my library card again.
Thank you @Devlesko and @BlueLobelia for plant info Smile
Thinking of you all today with your various projects and family commitments. Really enjoy reading the posts. I've probably said it before but it's like little snapshots of other people's lives Smile

Peridot1 · 28/05/2021 07:57

Morning all.

I know exactly what you mean about the little snapshots of people’s lives @Fnib. It’s lovely and comforting and inspiring.

I didn’t get my task of sorting my paperwork or measuring the garden yesterday so they are on the list for today. Along with the usual laundry tasks. And change a bed so will need to wash bedding.

I also want to start getting my clothes together to pack. And sort out my summer clothes. Which might mean a cull of winter clothes so I have space. All my summer clothes are in a blanket box at the end of my bed. I need to do a really big clear out. Have clothes I haven’t worn for years.

We ended up going to the pub for dinner yesterday evening with our neighbours. Was lovely as it was warm enough to sit outside. Felt like summer finally.

2020nymph · 28/05/2021 09:37

Yesterday was a looooong day at work but I did repair a top.

Today I need to get back on top of all the housework, get some flowers for my parents as we are going to theirs for the weekend and three loads of laundry. DS1 has asked for new character onesie as they have fancy dress days at school and his is on the small size.

Fnib · 28/05/2021 15:17

I'm feeling all pleased with myself as I've just made calls to sort out a regular milk delivery and 2x pet dental work. The books have not yet made it beyond a bag in the hall, but it's a start.
I have also looked at recipes for soda bread, and I'm thinking it's doable (in ref to the thread elsewhere about highly processed food)
Next up is a trip to local farm shop as they do really nice veg which isn't all wrapped in plastic, plus a butcher that has locally produced meat.
Gardening is temporarily on hold while I declutter the shed and see what tools we have before buying any more, but I'm confident that everything will come together this summer. What I don't want is plants wilting on the patio while they wait for me to get my act together.
My 'one little word' for this year (actually for the last 3!) is Simplify. I'm excited about how steady small steps are getting me there.
My grand plan is to reduce our consumption of all things as much as we can as our contribution to the environmental effort.
As ever, it's a work in progress.
